AEO basics 20 questions
What is AEO?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your brand easy for AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot to find, understand and cite, so you are named inside their answers instead of only listed as a blue link.
In practice it combines answer-first content, clear entity and schema markup, mentions on the third-party sites AI tools trust, and technical access for AI crawlers. Our complete guide to what AEO is walks through each part with examples.
What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization. An “answer engine” is any tool that replies with a written answer rather than a list of links, which today mainly means AI assistants and AI search features.
You will also see the term written as “answer engine optimisation” in British English. It overlaps heavily with GEO (generative engine optimization) and “LLM SEO”, which describe the same goal from slightly different angles.
What is an answer engine?
An answer engine is a search tool that reads sources for you and returns a direct, written answer. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Claude with web search are all answer engines.
Most of them are built on a large language model (LLM) that is connected to a live search index. That is why they can name brands, compare products and cite pages. See our roundup of the best AI search engines for how the main ones differ.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO aims to rank your pages in the list of search results. AEO aims to get your brand named and cited inside the AI-written answer that now sits above, or replaces, that list.
The two share a foundation: crawlable pages, helpful content and authority. AEO adds a few things on top, such as tracking prompts instead of keywords, writing answer-first passages that can be quoted, and earning mentions on review sites, forums and lists that AI tools read. Our AEO vs SEO comparison shows where they overlap and where they split.
What is GEO?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It describes optimizing content so that generative AI systems, the ones that write answers, include and cite it. The term comes from a 2023 academic paper that tested which content changes raised visibility in AI answers.
In day-to-day work, GEO and AEO describe almost the same set of tasks. Read what GEO is for the research behind it and how it relates to AEO.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
For practical purposes, yes. AEO and GEO both aim to make your brand appear in AI-generated answers. Some people use AEO for direct question answering (including voice and featured snippets) and GEO for generative tools like ChatGPT, but agencies and tools now use the two terms almost interchangeably.
What matters more than the label is the work: answer-first content, entity clarity, third-party mentions and measuring your mention rate across a fixed prompt set. Our GEO guide covers the naming history.
What is LLM SEO?
LLM SEO is another name for optimizing for large language model tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. It covers the same ground as AEO and GEO: being understood, trusted and cited by AI systems.
The term is common in SaaS and developer circles. If you want the background on how these models work, start with what an LLM is, then see how ChatGPT in particular picks sources in our ChatGPT SEO guide.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. AI engines that search the web, including Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search and Copilot, still rely on pages being crawlable, indexed and trustworthy, which is classic SEO.
What changes is the goal and the scorecard. You still want rankings, but you also want to be the brand the AI names. That is why we run both together, as explained in AEO vs SEO and in our AEO strategy guide.
Why does AEO matter in 2026?
Because a growing share of research now ends inside an AI answer. Pew Research found people clicked a result on 8% of Google visits that showed an AI summary, against 15% without one. Ahrefs measured a 58% lower click-through rate for the top result when an AI Overview appears. ChatGPT reported around 900 million weekly users in early 2026.
If buyers ask AI which provider to choose and you are not named, you lose the shortlist before they visit any website. Our AEO statistics roundup and AEO trends for 2026 collect the sourced numbers.
Who needs AEO?
Any business whose buyers research before they buy. That includes SaaS and IT companies, agencies, B2B manufacturers, ecommerce and D2C brands, and local services such as clinics, restaurants and coaching centres.
The more considered the purchase, the more AEO matters, because people ask AI for comparisons, shortlists and “best for” recommendations. We have industry guides for SaaS, ecommerce and local businesses.
Is AEO only for big brands?
No. Big brands start with more mentions, but AI engines answer very specific questions, and specific questions often have no big-brand answer. A focused niche, clear pricing and strong reviews can win prompts like “best accounting software for clinics in Gujarat”.
Small brands usually win fastest by owning narrow, high-intent prompts and earning a handful of credible brand mentions. The local AEO guide shows how this works for small businesses.
How long does AEO take to work?
Technical fixes and page updates can show in AI search answers within days to a few weeks, because tools like ChatGPT search, Perplexity and AI Overviews pull live pages. Broader gains in mention rate usually take three to six months, since third-party mentions and reviews build slowly.
Answers drawn from model training data change slowest, because they only update when a new model version ships. Our AEO strategy guide lays out a realistic 90-day plan, and AEO KPIs explains what to measure along the way.
Can anyone guarantee a mention in ChatGPT?
No. Nobody controls what ChatGPT or any AI engine says, and answers vary between users, sessions and model versions. Treat any guarantee of a specific mention or position as a red flag.
What a good agency can promise is a process: a tracked prompt set, a baseline, clear actions and honest monthly reporting on mention rate and citation share. Our guide on how to choose an AEO agency lists other warning signs.
What are the main parts of AEO?
AEO has six working parts:
- An AI visibility audit and a tracked prompt set
- Answer-first content that can be quoted directly
- Entity and schema optimization so machines know who you are
- Brand mentions and citations on trusted third-party sites
- Technical access for AI crawlers
- Ongoing measurement with AEO tools
Our AEO services page shows how we deliver each part.
What is an AI visibility audit?
An AI visibility audit checks how often, where and how accurately AI engines mention your brand. It starts with a set of prompts your buyers actually ask, runs them across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, and records who gets named, which pages are cited and what is said about you.
The output is a baseline against competitors plus a ranked list of fixes. See what an AEO audit includes and what it typically costs in our AEO pricing guide.
What is a prompt in AEO?
A prompt is the question or instruction a person types into an AI tool, for example “best CRM for a 10-person sales team”. In AEO, prompts replace keywords as the unit you track.
A good prompt set mixes discovery questions, comparisons, “best for” lists and brand questions, and stays fixed so results are comparable month to month. Our AEO prompt research guide shows how to build one from sales calls, reviews and People Also Ask data.
What is a citation in an AI answer?
A citation is a linked source that an AI engine shows alongside its answer, such as the numbered links in Perplexity or the source cards in AI Overviews and ChatGPT search. It tells the user, and you, which page the answer drew from.
Citations matter because they are the main way AI answers send traffic, and they show which domains the engine trusts on a topic. Tracking them is covered in AEO KPIs and in our AI Overviews optimization guide.
What is the difference between a mention and a citation?
A mention is when the AI names your brand in its answer text. A citation is when it links to a page as a source. You can have one without the other: an engine may name you while citing a review site, or cite your blog without recommending you.
Both are worth tracking. Mentions shape buyer shortlists; citations drive clicks and show where your authority comes from. Our guide to brand mentions for AEO explains how to grow each.
What is zero-click search?
Zero-click search is a search that ends without the user clicking any result, because the answer is shown directly on the page through an AI Overview, featured snippet, knowledge panel or AI chat reply.
Pew Research found users ended their browsing session on 26% of Google visits with an AI summary, compared with 16% without one. That is why being named inside the answer matters. Read our full guide to zero-click search for the data and what to do about it.
Where should I start with AEO?
Start by measuring. List 30 to 50 questions your buyers ask, run them in the main AI tools and note who is named. That baseline tells you whether your gap is content, authority, accuracy or technical access.
Then fix the basics in order: allow AI crawlers, add clear answer-first pages for your core services, tighten your entity details and schema, and earn a few strong third-party mentions. Our AEO strategy guide gives the full sequence, or book an AEO audit and we will do the baseline for you.
How AI engines choose sources 20 questions
How do AI engines decide which brands to recommend?
They look for brands that appear consistently across many trusted sources for the topic in the question. That includes your own site, review platforms, comparison articles, forums such as Reddit, news coverage and directories. The more sources agree on what you do and who you are best for, the more confident the model is in naming you.
Clear positioning helps too: pages that state who you serve, what you cost and how you compare give the model quotable facts. See how to rank in AI search and our guide to brand mentions for AEO.
Do AI assistants search the web in real time?
Many do, but not always. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Copilot and Gemini all retrieve live web pages for most questions. Plain chat without search, or questions the model thinks it can answer from memory, may rely only on training data.
This is why AEO has two time scales: live retrieval can reflect your changes within days, while training data only updates with new model versions. Our ChatGPT SEO guide and Perplexity SEO guide explain how each tool searches.
What is the difference between training data and live retrieval?
Training data is the large body of text a model learned from before release. It shapes what the model “knows” about your brand by default, but it has a cut-off date and changes only when a new model ships. Live retrieval is when the assistant searches the web at question time and reads current pages before answering.
For AEO you work on both: long-term mentions across the web feed future training data, while crawlable, answer-first pages win live retrieval today. Our what is an LLM explainer covers the basics.
What is RAG?
RAG stands for retrieval-augmented generation. The AI first retrieves relevant documents, usually by searching an index, then generates its answer using those documents as context. Most AI search features, including Perplexity, ChatGPT search and AI Overviews, work this way.
For AEO, RAG means your page has to be found by the retrieval step and contain a clear passage the model can lift. That is why answer-first content and good technical access matter so much.
Why do AI answers change each time I ask?
AI models generate text with some randomness, and they may retrieve different sources each time based on wording, location, account history and model version. Two people asking the same question can get different brand lists.
That is why one-off checks mislead. AEO tracking runs the same prompts repeatedly and reports a percentage, such as “named in 40% of runs”. Our guide to AEO KPIs explains mention rate and how to read it.
Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?
Usually because your competitor is mentioned in more of the sources ChatGPT reads for that topic: comparison articles, review sites, Reddit threads, listicles and their own clear product pages. It can also be because your site blocks OpenAI’s crawlers, lacks clear pricing or positioning, or describes you inconsistently.
Run an audit to find which sources ChatGPT cites for the prompt, then work on appearing in them. Our ChatGPT SEO guide and AEO audit guide cover the steps.
Do AI engines prefer big brands?
They favour brands with more consistent mentions, and big brands tend to have more. But AI engines also answer narrow questions, and for niche, local or use-case-specific prompts, specialist brands are often named ahead of giants.
The practical move is to target prompts where you have a real edge and back them with proof. See how smaller firms compete in our local AEO guide and AEO for SaaS.
Does ranking on Google help me appear in AI answers?
Yes, strongly for Google’s own AI features and noticeably for others. AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google’s index and ranking systems, so pages that rank well are more likely to be cited. ChatGPT search and Copilot use Bing and other indexes, so Bing rankings matter there too.
Ranking alone does not guarantee a mention, though. The page still needs a clear, quotable answer. Our AI Overviews optimization guide and AEO vs SEO explain the overlap.
Do AI engines read reviews?
Yes. Review platforms such as Google Business Profile, G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, Clutch and marketplace listings are frequently retrieved and cited, especially for “best” and “which should I choose” questions. Review volume, recency and the themes customers mention all feed into how AI describes you.
Asking happy customers to mention specific use cases in their reviews gives AI engines better material. See AEO for local business and our brand mentions guide.
Do AI engines use Reddit and forums?
Yes. Reddit and other forums are among the most cited sources in AI answers, particularly for product comparisons and recommendations, because they contain real user opinions. Google also has a data licensing deal with Reddit.
Do not spam threads. Instead, take part honestly where your expertise helps, encourage customers to share real experiences and monitor what is said about you. Our guide to brand mentions for AEO covers safe ways to build forum presence.
Does Wikipedia matter for AEO?
Wikipedia and Wikidata are heavily used in model training and in entity understanding, so a presence there can help AI engines describe you accurately. But Wikipedia has strict notability rules, and most small businesses do not qualify.
Do not create a page for yourself if you are not notable; it will be deleted. Focus instead on consistent profiles across directories, a strong About page and Organization schema with sameAs links. See also entity optimization below.
What makes content citable by AI?
Citable content gives a direct, self-contained answer near the top of a section, uses specific facts such as numbers, prices and dates, names the source of any claim and is easy to parse, with clear headings, lists and tables.
It also needs to be accessible: crawlable HTML, not blocked by robots.txt, and fresh. Our answer-first content guide shows the exact page pattern we use, and schema markup for AEO covers the structured data side.
Do AI engines care about freshness?
Yes, especially for topics that change, such as prices, tools, statistics and “best of” lists. AI search features often prefer recently updated pages and may skip content that looks stale.
Show a visible “last updated” date, refresh key pages on a set schedule and update your sitemap’s lastmod value when content truly changes. Our AEO trends 2026 post explains why freshness is becoming more important.
Does word count matter for AEO?
Not directly. AI engines extract passages, not whole pages, so a clear 50-word answer can be cited from a 600-word page or a 3,000-word guide. Length helps only when it adds genuine depth, such as more sub-questions answered, data or examples.
Aim for complete coverage of the topic with each section opening on a direct answer. Our answer-first content guide explains how to structure long and short pages.
Do AI engines consider author expertise?
Indirectly, yes. Google’s guidance on E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust) applies to its AI features, and other engines also favour sources that look credible. Named authors with real bios, credentials and a track record help signal that.
Add author pages, link them to real profiles such as LinkedIn and use Person schema. Our schema markup for AEO guide covers how to mark up authors.
Can AI engines read PDFs and images?
Many can read text-based PDFs, and some multimodal models can interpret images. But PDFs are harder to parse and less often cited, and text inside images is frequently missed by retrieval systems.
Put important facts, prices and answers in HTML text on the page. Use PDFs as downloads, not as the only home of key information, and give images descriptive alt text. Our answer-first content guide explains why plain HTML wins.
Can AI crawlers read JavaScript-rendered pages?
Often not well. Googlebot renders JavaScript, but many AI crawlers, including those used by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude, mostly read the raw HTML and may not execute scripts. Content that only appears after JavaScript runs can be invisible to them.
Use server-side rendering or static generation for key pages, and check by viewing the page source rather than the rendered page. See server-side rendering for AEO in the technical section below.
What happens when information about my brand conflicts?
AI engines may pick the wrong version, blend several versions or hedge. Old addresses, outdated prices, different founding dates or mismatched service lists across directories are common causes of wrong AI answers.
Pick one correct version of each fact, update your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and major directories to match, and mark it up with Organization schema. Our AEO audit guide includes an accuracy check for exactly this.
Do backlinks matter for AI answers?
Indirectly. Backlinks still help pages rank in Google and Bing, which feeds AI search features that retrieve from those indexes. But for AI answers, unlinked brand mentions on trusted sites also count, because models read the text, not only the link graph.
Focus on being mentioned in the right places, such as comparison articles, industry lists and news, whether or not they link. Our brand mentions for AEO guide explains the difference.
What is entity optimization?
Entity optimization makes sure search engines and AI models understand exactly who your business is: its name, what it does, where it is, who runs it and how it relates to other things. Models think in entities, not keywords.
The work includes a clear About page, consistent profiles across the web, Organization and LocalBusiness schema with sameAs links, and clear service and product naming. See schema markup for AEO and the entity section of our AEO services.
ChatGPT 20 questions
How do I get my business mentioned in ChatGPT?
Make sure OpenAI’s search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) can reach your site, publish clear pages that state what you do, who you serve and what you cost, and earn mentions on the sources ChatGPT tends to cite for your category, such as review sites, comparison articles, Reddit and industry lists.
Then track a fixed set of prompts to see whether your mention rate rises. Our ChatGPT SEO guide covers each step in detail, and how to use ChatGPT for SEO shows how to use the tool itself in your research.
How does ChatGPT search find websites?
ChatGPT search uses a mix of third-party search providers, including Bing, plus OpenAI’s own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. When a question needs current information, it runs searches, reads the returned pages and writes an answer with source links.
This means being indexed in Bing and allowing OAI-SearchBot both help. Our ChatGPT SEO guide explains the setup, and ChatGPT vs Google Search compares how the two find information.
What is OAI-SearchBot?
OAI-SearchBot is OpenAI’s crawler for ChatGPT’s search features. OpenAI says sites that allow it can appear in ChatGPT search results and answers. It is separate from GPTBot, which collects training data.
If you want to be cited in ChatGPT search, do not block OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt or at your firewall. Our ChatGPT SEO guide shows the exact robots.txt lines, and the technical section below explains which crawlers to allow.
What is GPTBot?
GPTBot is OpenAI’s crawler that collects publicly available web content that may be used to train future models. Blocking it keeps your content out of future training sets but does not, on its own, stop you appearing in ChatGPT search, which uses OAI-SearchBot.
Many businesses allow GPTBot so future models learn accurate information about them. Read should I block GPTBot below and our ChatGPT SEO guide for the trade-offs.
What is ChatGPT-User?
ChatGPT-User is the user agent OpenAI uses when ChatGPT visits a page because a user asked it to, for example when someone pastes your URL or a custom GPT fetches a page. It is not used for automatic crawling or training.
Because it acts on a user’s request, OpenAI notes that robots.txt rules may not apply to it in the same way as to its crawlers. See the ChatGPT SEO guide for all three OpenAI user agents.
Should I block GPTBot?
For most businesses that want AI visibility, no. Allowing GPTBot helps future models learn accurate facts about your brand. Blocking makes sense if your content is your product, such as paid research or original publishing you want to license.
Whatever you decide about GPTBot, keep OAI-SearchBot allowed if you want to appear in ChatGPT search. Check your robots.txt and CDN settings, as explained in how to check robots.txt for AI crawlers below.
How do I check whether ChatGPT knows my business?
Ask it directly, with search on and off: “What is [your brand]?”, “Who are the best [your category] in [your city]?” and “Compare [you] and [competitor]”. Note whether you are named, whether facts are correct and which sources are cited. Repeat a few times, because answers vary.
For reliable results, track 30 to 100 prompts in a tool. Our free AEO tools list includes ways to start without paying, or we can run it as part of an AEO audit.
Why does ChatGPT give wrong information about my company?
Usually because the sources it reads are outdated or inconsistent, or because it is relying on old training data. Wrong prices, old locations, discontinued services and confused company names are the most common errors.
Fix the facts at the source: your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and any article that repeats the error. Then add a clear, current facts section to your About page. Our AEO audit guide includes an accuracy review, and ChatGPT SEO explains how corrections flow through.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
Not inside the organic answer. OpenAI has started showing ads in ChatGPT in some markets, but they are labelled and shown separately, and OpenAI says ads do not influence the answers themselves. There is no way to buy a recommendation in the answer text.
Organic mentions come from AEO work: content, mentions and technical access. Read about ChatGPT ads for how the ad format works, and ChatGPT SEO for earning organic mentions.
How does ChatGPT choose which sources to cite?
ChatGPT cites pages that its search step retrieved and that directly support a sentence in its answer. Pages with a clear, specific passage matching the question, from domains that look trustworthy and current, are more likely to be chosen.
Comparison articles, review sites, documentation, news and well-structured brand pages are common picks. Our ChatGPT SEO guide and answer-first content guide show how to write passages that get selected.
How long does it take for ChatGPT to show a new page?
If OAI-SearchBot and Bing can crawl it, a new page can be retrieved by ChatGPT search within days to a few weeks. Submitting the URL to Bing Webmaster Tools and using IndexNow can speed up discovery.
Appearing in ChatGPT’s built-in knowledge, without search, takes much longer, because that only updates with new model training. See what IndexNow is below and our ChatGPT SEO guide.
Does ChatGPT send traffic to websites?
Yes, though less than Google. ChatGPT search shows source links and cards, and that referral traffic tends to be highly qualified because users arrive with a specific need. Some ChatGPT visits also show up as direct traffic because the referrer is not always passed.
Set up an AI traffic segment in GA4 to see it. Our guide to tracking AI traffic in GA4 shows the exact regex and reports.
What is ChatGPT shopping?
ChatGPT shopping is the product discovery experience inside ChatGPT that shows product cards with images, prices, reviews and merchant links when users ask buying questions. OpenAI says these results are organic, not ads, and draw on structured product data and third-party sources.
Clean product feeds, Product schema with price and availability, and strong reviews help you appear. Our AEO for ecommerce guide covers the details.
Do Custom GPTs help AEO?
Not much for general visibility. A Custom GPT you build is only used by people who find and open it, and it does not change what ChatGPT says to everyone else. It can be a useful product or lead tool, but it is not a ranking lever.
Your time is better spent on the content and mentions that ChatGPT search retrieves. See ChatGPT SEO and how to use ChatGPT for business for where Custom GPTs do help.
Does ChatGPT memory affect recommendations?
Yes, for that user. When memory is on, ChatGPT can use past conversations and saved preferences to personalise answers, for example by favouring brands a user already mentioned. This is one reason answers differ between people.
You cannot optimise for individual memories, so AEO tracking uses clean sessions to measure baseline visibility. Our AEO KPIs guide explains how to set up fair measurement.
How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my product over a competitor?
Give it clear reasons. Publish honest comparison and “alternatives” pages, state who your product is best for, show pricing and proof such as case studies and reviews, and get included in third-party comparisons that ChatGPT cites.
Recommendations follow consensus, so being described the same way across many sources beats any single page. Our ChatGPT SEO guide and brand mentions for AEO cover how to build that consensus.
Does ChatGPT read llms.txt?
OpenAI has not confirmed that ChatGPT uses llms.txt for search or ranking. The file is a proposed standard that gives AI tools a curated, markdown summary of your site, and some developer tools read it, but major AI search engines have not said they rely on it.
It is cheap to add and harmless, but do not expect it to move results by itself. Read our full guide on what llms.txt is.
How do I track ChatGPT mentions?
Use an AI visibility tool that runs your prompt set in ChatGPT on a schedule and records mentions, position, sentiment and cited sources. Otterly.AI, Peec AI, Profound and similar tools do this, with entry plans from around $29 a month.
For a quick start, run 20 to 30 prompts manually each month in a spreadsheet. Compare options in our best AEO tools roundup and our Peec AI vs Otterly vs Profound comparison.
Does ChatGPT use my Google ranking?
Not directly. ChatGPT search relies on its own crawler and partners such as Bing rather than Google’s index. However, pages that rank well in Google often also rank well in Bing and earn more mentions elsewhere, so there is a strong correlation.
Check your Bing visibility separately using Bing Webmaster Tools. Our ChatGPT SEO guide and ChatGPT vs Google Search explain the difference.
Is ChatGPT search available in India?
Yes. ChatGPT search is available to users in India, including on the free plan, on the web and in the mobile apps. Indian users can also pay in rupees for paid plans.
For businesses in India, that means local buyers are already asking ChatGPT for recommendations. See ChatGPT Plus price in India and our AEO services in India guide.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode 20 questions
What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results. They answer the query in a few sentences or bullets and show links to the pages used. Google reported more than 2 billion monthly users of AI Overviews in 2025.
They change how clicks flow: Ahrefs found the top organic result gets about 58% lower click-through when an AI Overview appears. Our AI Overviews optimization guide explains how to be one of the cited sources.
What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is Google’s conversational search experience, opened from a tab in Google Search. It answers complex, multi-part questions with a longer AI response, lets you ask follow-ups and shows source links throughout. It uses a “query fan-out” method that runs many related searches at once.
Google said AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users in 2026. See our Google AI Mode SEO guide for optimization and how to use Google AI Mode for the user side.
How do I appear in AI Overviews?
Be indexed and eligible for a snippet, then make your page the best direct answer to the query. That means a clear answer in the first lines of the relevant section, supporting detail below, and strong overall quality and trust signals.
Pages that already rank on page one are cited most often, but AI Overviews also pull from lower-ranking pages with a precise passage. Our AI Overviews optimization guide and answer-first content guide give the page template.
Are there special requirements for AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no extra technical requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal Search eligibility: the page must be indexed and able to show a snippet. There is no special markup or file to add.
The usual SEO basics apply, including crawlability, helpful content, page experience and clear structure. Google’s own guidance is summarised in our AI Overviews optimization guide.
Do I need special schema for AI Overviews?
No special schema is required. Google says structured data is not needed to appear in AI features. That said, accurate structured data still helps Google understand your pages and entities, and it powers rich results that sit alongside AI Overviews.
Use the schema types that match your content, such as Organization, Product, LocalBusiness, Article and FAQPage, and make sure the markup matches visible text. See schema markup for AEO.
Why is my page not in the AI Overview?
Common reasons are: the page does not rank in the top results, the answer is buried deep in the page, a competitor gives a clearer or more current answer, the page is blocked by nosnippet or robots rules, or Google does not trust the site on that topic yet.
Check indexing in Search Console, rewrite the opening of the section as a direct answer and add specific facts. Our AI Overviews optimization guide includes a troubleshooting checklist.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
Yes, on average. Pew Research found users clicked a search result on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary only about 1% of the time. Ahrefs measured a 58% lower click-through rate for the top result.
Clicks that do happen tend to be better qualified. Read zero-click search and our AEO statistics for the full data.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
Only partly. Google does not offer a separate opt-out for AI Overviews. You can limit use of your content with the nosnippet or max-snippet robots directives or the data-nosnippet attribute, but these also reduce or remove your normal search snippets.
Blocking Google-Extended does not affect AI Overviews, because it only controls use for Gemini models outside Search. For most businesses, opting out costs more visibility than it saves. See our AI Overviews guide.
Does Search Console show AI Overviews data?
Partly. Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the normal “Web” search type performance report in Search Console, but they are not broken out separately. You cannot filter to see only AI Overview traffic.
To estimate impact, compare click-through rate on queries known to trigger AI Overviews, and use rank trackers that flag AI Overview presence. See AEO KPIs and tracking AI traffic in GA4.
How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?
AI Overviews appear automatically on some normal search results as a short summary. AI Mode is a separate, opt-in conversational tab with longer answers, follow-up questions and many more source links, built for complex research.
AI Mode also fans one query out into many sub-searches, so it can cite pages that rank for related questions, not only the main one. Our Google AI Mode SEO guide explains what that means for content planning.
Is AI Mode available in India?
Yes. Google rolled out AI Mode in India in 2025 and has since added Hindi support alongside English. Users can access it from the AI Mode tab in Google Search and in the Google app.
This makes AEO directly relevant for businesses selling to Indian buyers. See how to use Google AI Mode and our AEO services in India guide.
Does Google Business Profile affect AI answers?
Yes, especially for local questions. Google’s AI features use Business Profile data such as categories, hours, reviews, photos and services when answering “near me” or city-specific queries, and other AI tools often read the same information through maps and directories.
Keep your profile complete, accurate and active with regular reviews and posts. Our local AEO guide covers the full checklist.
Does E-E-A-T matter for AI Overviews?
Yes. AI Overviews draw on Google’s core ranking systems, which aim to reward content showing experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust (E-E-A-T). It is not a single score, but signals like named expert authors, first-hand experience, citations and a strong reputation help.
For topics about health, money or safety, trust signals matter even more. Our AI Overviews optimization guide shows how to add them to a page.
Does page speed affect AI Overviews?
Indirectly. Page experience, including speed, is part of what Google’s ranking systems consider, and AI Overviews draw on those rankings. Slow pages can also time out for AI crawlers that fetch them live.
Speed is rarely the deciding factor for a citation, but a fast, stable page removes one obstacle. See the technical section below on site speed and AEO.
What if an AI Overview shows wrong information about my brand?
Use the feedback option on the AI Overview to report it, and then fix the source. Find which pages Google cited, correct your own site and profiles, and contact third-party sites that hold the wrong fact.
Add a clear, current facts section on your About page and keep your Business Profile accurate. Our AEO audit guide includes an accuracy check, and the AI Overviews guide explains how Google picks sources.
Do AI Overviews appear for every search?
No. They show mainly for informational and complex questions, comparisons and “how to” queries. They appear less often for navigational searches, simple brand queries and many transactional or local searches, and their frequency changes as Google tests.
Ahrefs and others have tracked the share of keywords with AI Overviews rising sharply through 2025. Our AEO statistics post shows the latest figures.
Do ads appear in AI Overviews?
Yes. Google shows Search and Shopping ads within or around AI Overviews in a growing number of markets, labelled as sponsored. Ads appear in AI Mode too. Advertisers do not choose this placement directly; it comes from existing campaigns.
Paid placement is separate from the organic citations in the summary. For the paid side, see our guide to Google Ads AI Max.
What powers Google’s AI features?
Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode are powered by custom versions of Gemini models working with Google Search’s index, ranking and Knowledge Graph. The model writes the answer; Search provides the sources.
That combination is why classic SEO still matters for Google’s AI. See our Google AI Mode SEO guide and how to use Gemini for background.
How do I track AI Overview citations?
Use a rank tracker or AI visibility tool that records whether an AI Overview appears for each keyword and which domains it cites. Semrush, Ahrefs and several dedicated AEO tools offer this.
Manually, search your key queries in a clean browser and note the cited links monthly. Compare options in our best AEO tools and free AEO tools lists.
Does structured data help in AI Mode?
It helps Google understand your content and entities, which supports AI Mode, but Google says structured data is not required to appear. Product, LocalBusiness and Organization markup are especially useful because they feed shopping and local results that AI Mode can show.
Keep markup accurate and consistent with visible content. See schema markup for AEO and the Google AI Mode SEO guide.
Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and other AI tools 20 questions
How do I get cited by Perplexity?
Allow PerplexityBot to crawl your site, publish specific, well-sourced answers and keep key pages fresh. Perplexity cites many sources per answer and favours pages with clear facts, data and up-to-date information.
Being indexed by major search engines also helps, since Perplexity combines its own index with other web results. Our Perplexity SEO guide has the full checklist.
What is PerplexityBot?
PerplexityBot is Perplexity’s crawler that indexes pages so they can be surfaced and cited in Perplexity answers. Perplexity says it is not used to train AI models. A separate agent, Perplexity-User, fetches pages when a user asks about a specific link.
Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and your firewall if you want Perplexity citations. See our Perplexity SEO guide for the setup.
Does Perplexity send traffic?
Yes. Perplexity shows numbered citations with every answer, and its users click through more than in many other AI tools because the sources are so visible. Volumes are smaller than Google, but visitors are often in research mode.
Track it as a referral source in GA4. Our GA4 AI traffic guide includes Perplexity in the filter, and the Perplexity SEO guide covers how to earn the clicks.
How does Gemini choose sources?
Gemini uses Google Search for grounding when it needs current or factual information, so it tends to cite pages that rank and are trusted in Google. It also draws on its training data and Google’s Knowledge Graph for entity facts.
That means good Google SEO, a clear entity profile and accurate Business Profile data all help. See how to use Gemini and our AI Overviews guide, since the same signals apply.
How do I appear in Gemini answers?
Rank well in Google for the questions you care about, publish clear answer-first content and keep your entity information consistent across the web. Gemini relies heavily on Google Search grounding and the Knowledge Graph.
Track Gemini alongside ChatGPT and AI Overviews, because results differ. Our AEO strategy guide explains how to cover several engines with one plan.
How does Microsoft Copilot find sources?
Copilot uses Bing’s search index to find and cite pages. That makes Bing indexing, Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow especially important for Copilot visibility.
Bing Webmaster Tools has also started reporting how often your pages are cited in Copilot answers. Read how to use Microsoft Copilot and our Copilot vs ChatGPT comparison for more.
Should I submit my site to Bing for AEO?
Yes. Bing’s index feeds Microsoft Copilot and is one of the sources behind ChatGPT search, so being properly indexed in Bing affects several AI engines at once. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and fix any crawl issues.
It takes about 15 minutes and is one of the highest-return AEO tasks. See ChatGPT SEO for how Bing connects to ChatGPT.
What is IndexNow?
IndexNow is an open protocol that lets you notify search engines instantly when a page is added, updated or deleted. It is supported by Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver and others. Google does not use it.
Because Bing powers Copilot and contributes to ChatGPT search, IndexNow can speed up how fast AI engines see your changes. Many WordPress SEO plugins and CDNs can send IndexNow pings automatically.
Does Claude search the web?
Yes. Anthropic’s Claude can search the web and cite sources when web search is enabled. Anthropic uses separate user agents: ClaudeBot for training data, Claude-SearchBot for search indexing and Claude-User for fetching pages a user asks about.
Allow Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User if you want to be cited. See how to use Claude and the ClaudeBot question in the technical section.
How do I get mentioned by Claude?
The same fundamentals apply as for other engines: allow Anthropic’s search crawlers, publish clear, factual pages and earn mentions on trusted third-party sites. Claude tends to favour well-sourced, balanced content.
Claude is especially popular with developers and professionals, so it matters most for B2B, SaaS and technical brands. Track it in your prompt set alongside ChatGPT. Our AEO for SaaS guide covers B2B tactics.
Does DeepSeek matter for AEO?
It depends on your market. DeepSeek is widely used in some regions and among developers, but its share of buyer research in India, the US and Europe is smaller than ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI features.
Track it if your audience uses it, but prioritise the engines your buyers rely on most. See how to use DeepSeek and is DeepSeek safe for background.
What is Meta AI?
Meta AI is Meta’s assistant built into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, plus a standalone app. It can answer questions and search the web, which makes it a discovery channel in markets like India where WhatsApp is everywhere.
Its web answers draw on search partners, so strong general SEO and mentions help. See how to use Meta AI and ChatGPT vs Meta AI.
Do I need to optimize for each AI engine separately?
Mostly no. About 80% of the work, including clear content, entity consistency, mentions and crawler access, helps every engine. The differences are in which index each uses: Google for AI Overviews and Gemini, Bing for Copilot and partly ChatGPT, and each tool’s own crawler.
Measure each engine separately, then fix engine-specific gaps. Our AEO strategy guide shows how to prioritise.
Which AI engine matters most for my business?
For most businesses, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode reach the most people, and ChatGPT is the most used standalone assistant. B2B and tech buyers also use Perplexity, Claude and Copilot heavily, and Copilot matters in Microsoft-heavy companies.
The best answer comes from your own data: ask customers which tools they used and check AI referrals in GA4. See tracking AI traffic in GA4 and our AI search engines roundup.
What is an AI browser?
An AI browser builds an assistant into the browser itself, so it can summarise pages, answer questions and complete tasks across tabs. Examples include Perplexity Comet, ChatGPT Atlas and AI features in Chrome and Edge.
They matter for AEO because they read your pages on the user’s behalf. Clear structure and accessible HTML help. See our roundup of the best AI browsers and our Perplexity Comet review.
What is agentic search?
Agentic search is when an AI agent does the research and sometimes the action for the user: comparing options across many sites, filling forms, booking or buying. Instead of a person clicking results, the agent visits and judges your pages.
Sites with clear prices, availability, policies and simple flows are easier for agents to use. Read our full guide to agentic search and what AI agents are.
Do voice assistants use AI now?
Yes. Google Assistant is being replaced by Gemini, Amazon has launched Alexa+ built on generative AI, and Siri increasingly uses AI models. Voice answers now come from the same AI systems that power chat and AI search.
This means voice visibility follows the same AEO rules: short, direct answers and clear entity data. See AI voice assistants compared and our voice search AEO guide.
How do I optimize for voice search?
Answer questions in natural, conversational language with a short spoken-length answer of around 30 to 50 words at the top. Keep local data such as hours, address and phone accurate in Google Business Profile and Apple Business Connect, and make pages fast and mobile friendly.
Voice assistants usually give one answer, not ten, so precision matters. Our voice search AEO guide covers the full approach.
Are there other AI search tools worth tracking?
Depending on your audience, consider Grok on X, Meta AI in WhatsApp and Instagram, You.com, Brave’s AI answers, Amazon Rufus for products, and regional tools. Most businesses get the most value from tracking five: ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and Gemini or Copilot.
See our roundup of the best AI search engines and Grok vs ChatGPT for context.
Do all AI engines show citations?
Not always. Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Copilot and ChatGPT search show sources for most web-based answers. Plain chat answers from training data, voice replies and some agent responses may show none.
That is why AEO tracks mentions as well as citations. Being named still shapes buyer choices even without a link. See brand mentions for AEO and AEO KPIs.
Content for AEO 20 questions
What is answer-first content?
Answer-first content puts a direct, complete answer in the first one or two sentences of a page or section, then adds detail, examples and evidence below. It mirrors how AI engines extract passages: they look for a short, self-contained answer to the question.
It also helps human readers who skim. Our answer-first content guide includes templates, before and after examples and a checklist.
How long should an answer be for AEO?
Aim for 40 to 60 words for the core answer, which is long enough to be complete and short enough to quote. Follow it with supporting detail, lists or a table for readers who want more.
For complex questions, give a one-line answer first, then break the rest into short sub-sections. See answer-first content for examples of the right length.
Should every page have an FAQ section?
Not every page, but most service, product and guide pages benefit from five to eight real questions that buyers ask. FAQs give AI engines ready-made question and answer pairs and catch follow-up questions the main content skips.
Use real questions from sales calls, reviews and People Also Ask, not filler. See does FAQ schema still work below and our prompt research guide for finding the right questions.
What headings work best for AEO?
Headings phrased as the questions people actually ask, such as “How much does an AEO audit cost?”, work well because they match prompts and tell AI engines exactly what the next passage answers. Keep a clear H1, H2, H3 hierarchy.
Avoid clever or vague headings like “Our approach”. Our answer-first content guide shows heading patterns that get cited.
Do tables help AEO?
Yes. Tables present comparisons, prices, specs and features in a structured way that AI engines can read and quote accurately. They are especially useful on comparison, pricing and “best of” pages.
Use real HTML tables, not images, with clear column headers. Our key facts table explanation below and our Peec AI vs Otterly vs Profound comparison show tables in practice.
Should I publish comparison pages?
Yes. “X vs Y” and “best tools for Z” questions are among the most common prompts, and AI engines often cite comparison pages to answer them. An honest comparison that includes your competitors’ strengths is more likely to be trusted and quoted.
Include a summary table, who each option is best for and clear pricing. See our AEO vs SEO and tools comparison as examples.
Should I publish ‘alternatives to’ pages?
Yes, if you are a genuine alternative. Buyers often ask “alternatives to [big brand]”, and AI engines cite pages that list options with clear reasons. An alternatives page lets you position yourself for people already looking to switch.
Be fair and specific about who should choose which option, or the page will read as an ad and be skipped. Our ChatGPT SEO guide explains why balanced content wins recommendations.
How important are prices on my website?
Very. Pricing questions are among the most common prompts, and if your site does not show prices, AI engines will guess, quote an old figure or name a competitor that does. Even a starting price or range helps.
If prices vary, explain what drives them and give typical ranges. Our AEO pricing guide is an example of transparent pricing content.
Why does original research help AEO?
Original data, such as surveys, benchmarks and analyses of your own results, gives AI engines and journalists something new to cite. Unique statistics get repeated across the web, which multiplies your mentions.
Even small studies help if they are specific and well documented. See how other sources are cited in our AEO statistics roundup and brand mentions guide.
How often should I update content?
Review your most important pages at least every quarter and update fast-changing pages, like pricing, tools and statistics, monthly or whenever facts change. Show a visible “last updated” date.
Only change the date when you make real updates, not cosmetic ones. Our AEO strategy guide includes a refresh calendar, and AEO trends 2026 explains why freshness matters more now.
Should I write for AI or for people?
For people, structured so AI can understand it. The content that AI engines cite is the content that answers human questions most clearly: direct answers, real expertise, specific facts and easy structure.
Writing stiffly “for AI” usually hurts both. Our answer-first content guide shows how one page can serve both readers.
Can I use AI to write AEO content?
Yes, as a helper. AI tools are useful for research, outlines, drafts and editing, but publishing unedited AI text rarely works: it lacks first-hand experience, original detail and accurate specifics that AI engines and Google reward.
Add your own data, examples and expert review. Our guide to AI writing tools for AEO lists tools and a safe workflow.
Does Google penalise AI-written content?
Not because it is AI-written. Google says it rewards helpful content however it is produced, but it acts against content made mainly to manipulate rankings, including mass-produced, low-value AI pages, under its spam policies.
The test is quality and usefulness, not the tool. See AI writing tools for AEO for how to keep AI-assisted content helpful.
What is a content cluster?
A content cluster is a group of pages around one topic: a main pillar page that covers it broadly, linked to supporting pages that each answer a specific sub-question in depth. Each page links back to the pillar and to related pages.
Clusters show AI engines and Google that you cover a topic thoroughly. This FAQ links into our cluster on what AEO is, with supporting guides such as AEO audits and AEO pricing.
How many pages do I need for AEO?
There is no fixed number. Start with one strong page per core service or product, plus pages for your top buyer questions: pricing, comparisons, “best for” use cases and FAQs. Many small businesses see results with 15 to 30 well-built pages.
Coverage of real prompts matters more than volume. Our prompt research guide shows how to map prompts to pages.
Should I include statistics in my content?
Yes, with sources. Research on generative engine optimization found that adding statistics and citations noticeably raised visibility in AI answers. Specific numbers make a passage more quotable and trustworthy.
Always cite where each number comes from, with a link and date, and avoid made-up or unsourced figures. Our AEO statistics post shows the format we use.
Do case studies help AEO?
Yes. Case studies give AI engines concrete proof of what you deliver, for whom and with what result, which supports recommendations for “best agency for X” style prompts. They also give buyers reasons to trust the mention.
Use real names, numbers, timelines and methods. See our case studies for examples, and brand mentions for AEO for getting them referenced elsewhere.
Should I write content in regional languages?
If your buyers search in them, yes. AI Mode supports Hindi, and ChatGPT and Gemini answer in many Indian languages. Content in Hindi, Gujarati or other regional languages can win prompts with much less competition.
Translate your core pages properly rather than machine-translating everything, and use hreflang tags. See AEO services in India for local market advice.
What is a key facts table?
A key facts table is a short table near the top of a page that lists the essential facts about a product, service or company: price, location, founded date, best for, key features and so on. It gives AI engines an easy, structured source for accurate answers.
It also stops AI tools guessing details. See answer-first content and schema markup for AEO for how to pair it with structured data.
How do I find which questions to answer?
Collect questions from sales calls, support tickets, reviews, Google’s People Also Ask, Reddit and forums, and the follow-up suggestions AI tools show. Then group them by intent: discovery, comparison, pricing and problems.
Prioritise questions close to buying decisions. Our AEO prompt research guide walks through the full process with templates.
Technical AEO, crawlers and schema 20 questions
Which crawlers should I allow for AEO?
If you want AI visibility, allow the search and user-fetch crawlers at minimum: Googlebot and Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User (OpenAI), PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User, and Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User (Anthropic). Training crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended are a separate business choice.
Check both robots.txt and your CDN or firewall, since either can block them. Our ChatGPT SEO and Perplexity SEO guides list each agent.
How do I check if robots.txt blocks AI crawlers?
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for “User-agent” lines naming AI bots, such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot, followed by “Disallow: /”. Also check for a blanket “User-agent: *” with “Disallow: /”, which blocks everyone.
Then check your CDN, security plugin or hosting firewall, which can block bots even when robots.txt allows them. Our AEO audit includes a full crawler access test.
Can Cloudflare block AI crawlers?
Yes. Since mid-2025, Cloudflare blocks known AI crawlers by default on many new domains and offers one-click AI bot blocking and “pay per crawl” settings. Many site owners have blocked AI search bots without realising it.
In the Cloudflare dashboard, review the bot and AI crawler settings and allow the search crawlers you want. Then confirm in your server logs that the bots are getting 200 responses.
What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed standard: a markdown file at yoursite.com/llms.txt that gives AI tools a short, curated summary of your site with links to your most important pages. It was proposed in 2024 to help language models use websites more efficiently.
Some developer tools read it, but major AI search engines have not confirmed using it for ranking. Our full guide explains what llms.txt is and how to write one.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It is optional. Adding one takes under an hour and does no harm, and it may help some AI tools and coding assistants understand your site. But there is no evidence it improves visibility in ChatGPT, AI Overviews or Perplexity today.
Prioritise crawler access, answer-first content and mentions first. Read what llms.txt is for a template if you decide to add one.
Which schema types help AEO?
The most useful are Organization (with sameAs links), LocalBusiness for physical locations, Product and Offer for ecommerce, Service, Article with author details, Person for authors, FAQPage, HowTo where relevant, Review and AggregateRating, and BreadcrumbList.
Pick types that match your visible content and keep data accurate. Our schema markup for AEO guide includes copy-ready JSON-LD examples.
Does FAQ schema still work?
For Google rich results, mostly no: since 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health sites. But FAQPage markup still helps search engines and AI tools understand question and answer pairs on your page.
This page uses FAQPage schema for all 200 questions for that reason. Make sure the questions and answers in the markup match the visible text. See schema markup for AEO.
Which structured data format should I use?
Use JSON-LD. It is Google’s recommended format, it sits in a script tag separate from your HTML, and it is easy to maintain and validate. Microdata and RDFa still work but are harder to manage.
Test your markup with Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator. Our schema markup for AEO guide has JSON-LD templates.
What is sameAs in schema?
sameAs is a property in Organization or Person schema that lists the official profiles of the same entity elsewhere, such as LinkedIn, Wikipedia, Wikidata, Crunchbase, Google Business Profile, YouTube and X. It tells search engines and AI that these all refer to you.
It is one of the simplest ways to strengthen entity understanding. See the Organization example in schema markup for AEO.
Does site speed matter for AEO?
Somewhat. Fast pages rank better in Google, and AI crawlers fetching pages live may give up on very slow responses. A slow server can also limit how many pages bots crawl.
Aim for good Core Web Vitals and quick server response times, especially on key pages. Speed rarely wins a citation on its own, but slowness can cost one. Our AEO audit includes a technical check.
Is server-side rendering important for AEO?
Yes, for key content. Many AI crawlers read the raw HTML and do not run JavaScript, so content loaded only on the client side may never be seen. Server-side rendering or static generation puts the content directly in the HTML.
Test by viewing the page source (not the inspector) and checking that your main text, prices and FAQs are there. WordPress sites usually render server-side by default.
Do AI crawlers respect robots.txt?
The major ones say they do. OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Perplexity and Microsoft publish their crawler names and state that their automated crawlers follow robots.txt. User-triggered fetchers, such as ChatGPT-User, may be treated differently because they act on a person’s request.
Some smaller or unknown bots ignore robots.txt, which is why firewalls and bot management exist. See which crawlers to allow above.
How can I see AI crawlers in server logs?
Download your raw access logs from your host or CDN and filter the user-agent field for names like GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended. Check status codes: 200 means success, 403 or 429 means they are being blocked or rate-limited.
Verify real bots by checking their published IP ranges, since user agents can be faked. Our AEO audit includes a log review.
What is ClaudeBot?
ClaudeBot is Anthropic’s crawler that collects public web content that may be used to train Claude models. Anthropic also runs Claude-SearchBot, which indexes content for Claude’s search answers, and Claude-User, which fetches pages a user asks about.
To be cited in Claude’s web answers, allow Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User. Blocking ClaudeBot only affects training. See how to use Claude.
Does a sitemap help AEO?
Yes. An XML sitemap helps search engines and some AI crawlers find all your important pages, and accurate lastmod dates signal when content has changed. Submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
Keep it clean: include only indexable, canonical pages, and update lastmod only when content really changes. Pair it with IndexNow for faster discovery in Bing.
Does HTTPS matter for AEO?
Yes. HTTPS is a basic trust and ranking signal, modern browsers warn users about insecure sites, and some crawlers and AI tools may treat HTTP pages as less trustworthy. Almost every cited page in AI answers today uses HTTPS.
Make sure all pages redirect to HTTPS, your certificate is valid and there is no mixed content.
What should I do with thin pages?
Improve, merge or remove them. Thin pages with little original content dilute your site’s quality signals and give AI engines nothing worth citing. Combine overlapping pages into one strong page, expand useful ones with real answers, and noindex or remove pages that serve no purpose.
Redirect removed URLs to the closest relevant page. Our AEO audit flags thin and duplicate pages.
Do canonical tags matter for AI search?
Yes. Canonical tags tell search engines which version of a page is the main one, which affects which URL gets indexed and therefore which URL AI search features retrieve and cite. Conflicting canonicals can split authority or hide the page you want cited.
Use self-referencing canonicals on main pages and point duplicates to the original.
Does internal linking help AEO?
Yes. Internal links help crawlers discover your pages, show how topics connect and pass authority to your most important pages. Descriptive anchor text, like the links in these answers, tells AI engines what the linked page is about.
Link from broad guides to specific answers and back again. This FAQ, for example, links into guides like answer-first content and AEO audits.
Does mobile-friendliness matter for AEO?
Yes. Google uses mobile-first indexing, so the mobile version of your page is what gets indexed and fed into AI Overviews and AI Mode. Most AI app usage also happens on phones, so visitors from AI answers usually land on mobile.
Make sure content, schema and links are identical on mobile and desktop, and that pages are easy to read on small screens.
Local businesses and ecommerce 20 questions
How do I get my local business recommended by AI?
Keep your Google Business Profile complete and active, collect regular reviews that mention your services and area, keep your name, address and phone consistent across directories, and publish clear service and location pages on your site.
AI engines read all of these when answering “best [service] in [city]” questions. Our AEO for local business guide walks through each step.
What matters most for local AEO?
Three things: a strong Google Business Profile with the right categories, lots of recent reviews, and consistent business details across the web. After that come clear service pages, local mentions in news or community sites, and accurate opening hours.
Reviews carry particular weight because AI engines summarise them. See AEO for local business and the review questions below.
Do reviews affect AI recommendations?
Yes. AI engines often summarise review sentiment and pull specific themes, such as “fast delivery” or “friendly staff”, into their answers. Higher volume, recent and detailed reviews make a business more likely to be recommended and described positively.
Ask satisfied customers to mention what they bought and why they liked it. See AEO for local business and brand mentions for AEO.
Should I reply to reviews?
Yes. Replies show you are active and care about customers, and the text of your replies can add useful context that AI tools read, such as the service delivered and the area served. Calm, helpful replies to negative reviews also soften their impact.
Reply to every review within a few days, and keep replies specific rather than copied. Our local AEO guide has reply templates.
Which directories matter for businesses in India?
Google Business Profile comes first, followed by Justdial, IndiaMART for B2B, Sulekha, Practo for doctors, Zomato and Swiggy for restaurants, MakeMyTrip and Booking.com for hotels, and LinkedIn for companies. Industry-specific directories and chambers of commerce also help.
Keep details identical everywhere. See AEO services in India and AEO for local business.
What is NAP consistency?
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. NAP consistency means these details are written exactly the same on your website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Inconsistent details confuse search engines and AI tools and can cause wrong answers.
Audit your listings, fix differences and mark up your details with LocalBusiness schema. See schema markup for AEO.
Should I create a page for every area I serve?
Only if each page has genuinely useful, specific content, such as local projects, team members, prices or directions. Thin pages that only swap the city name can be seen as doorway pages and hurt you.
For most businesses, one strong page per main area served works better than dozens of near-duplicates. See AEO for local business.
Does Apple Business Connect matter?
Yes, for iPhone users. Apple Business Connect controls how your business appears in Apple Maps, Siri and other Apple apps. As Siri uses more AI, those listings feed spoken answers to local questions.
Claiming and completing your listing is free. Add accurate hours, photos and categories. See our voice search AEO guide.
How do AI tools answer ‘near me’ questions?
They combine the user’s location with map and business listing data, mainly Google Business Profile for Google’s AI, and Bing Places or partner data for others, then rank options by relevance, distance and reputation, often summarising reviews.
Complete listings, strong reviews and clear service descriptions give you the best chance. See AEO for local business.
How do I get products recommended in AI shopping answers?
Provide complete, accurate product data: titles, descriptions, prices, availability, images and specs in Product schema and in your product feeds, such as Google Merchant Center. Earn reviews and appear in third-party comparisons and “best of” lists.
State who each product is best for in plain language. Our AEO for ecommerce guide covers the full checklist.
Does Google Merchant Center affect AI shopping results?
Yes. Google’s Shopping Graph, which feeds shopping results in AI Overviews and AI Mode, draws heavily on Merchant Center product data. Free listings let you appear without paying for ads.
Keep your feed accurate and complete, fix disapprovals and keep prices and stock in sync with your site. See AEO for ecommerce.
Which schema should product pages use?
Use Product schema with Offer (price, currency, availability), AggregateRating and Review where you have genuine reviews, Brand, and identifiers such as GTIN or SKU. Add shipping details and return policy markup where possible.
Make sure the markup matches what is visible on the page. Our schema markup for AEO guide includes a product example.
Do Amazon and Flipkart listings matter for AEO?
Yes. Marketplace listings and their reviews are often retrieved by AI engines for product questions, and they act as trusted third-party mentions of your brand. Strong listings with detailed descriptions and good ratings help you appear.
Keep product names and specs consistent between marketplaces and your own site. See AEO for ecommerce.
Should product pages have a ‘best for’ line?
Yes. A short line like “Best for small kitchens and daily cooking for two” tells AI engines exactly which questions the product answers. AI shopping answers are often organised by use case, so this phrasing gets matched and quoted.
Keep it honest and specific. Our AEO for ecommerce guide has examples.
Can small D2C brands win AI recommendations?
Yes. AI engines answer specific use-case questions, and specialist D2C brands with clear positioning, good reviews and mentions in niche blogs or creator content can be named ahead of big retailers.
Pick the use cases where you are truly best and build proof around them. Read AEO for ecommerce and brand mentions for AEO.
What is ChatGPT Instant Checkout?
Instant Checkout lets users buy products directly inside ChatGPT without leaving the chat. OpenAI launched it in the US in 2025 with Etsy sellers and Shopify merchants, built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol developed with Stripe.
It shows where AI shopping is heading. See agentic search and AEO for ecommerce for how to prepare your store.
How do I make my online store ready for AI agents?
Keep product data structured and accurate, show prices, stock, shipping and returns clearly in HTML, keep checkout simple, and avoid blocking legitimate AI agents. Watch for support of agent commerce standards from your platform, such as Shopify.
Agents favour stores that make decisions easy. Read our agentic search guide and what AI agents are.
Do return and shipping policies matter for AEO?
Yes. Buyers ask AI about delivery times, free shipping and returns, and AI shopping features may show these details. Clear, visible policies, plus shipping and return policy schema, help AI tools answer accurately and favour your store.
Put a short summary on product pages, not only on a separate policy page. See AEO for ecommerce.
How does AEO help restaurants and hotels?
People ask AI for the best places to eat or stay with specific needs, such as “family-friendly hotel near the airport” or “best Gujarati thali in Ahmedabad”. AEO helps you be named through complete listings, strong reviews, menus and amenities in HTML, and mentions on food and travel sites.
See AEO for local business for the full approach.
How does AEO help clinics and doctors?
Patients ask AI which clinic or specialist to visit, what a treatment costs and what to expect. Clinics can be named by having complete listings on Google and platforms like Practo, credentialed doctor profiles, clear treatment pages and many genuine reviews.
Health topics get extra trust scrutiny, so expert authorship matters. See AEO for local business and E-E-A-T for AI Overviews.
Measuring AEO and tools 20 questions
How do I measure AEO?
Track a fixed set of prompts across the main AI engines and measure mention rate, citation share, average position when named, sentiment and accuracy. Then connect it to business results with AI referral traffic in GA4, branded search trends and leads that say they found you through AI.
Our AEO KPIs guide defines each metric, and tracking AI traffic in GA4 covers the analytics side.
What is mention rate?
Mention rate is the percentage of tracked prompt runs where an AI engine names your brand. If you track 50 prompts and appear in 20 answers, your mention rate is 40%.
It is the core AEO metric because it shows how often you make the shortlist. Track it by engine and by topic. See AEO KPIs.
What is citation share?
Citation share is the percentage of all source links in tracked AI answers that point to your domain. It shows how much AI engines rely on your own content compared with competitors and third-party sites.
You can have a high mention rate but low citation share if AI names you based on review sites. Read AEO KPIs for how to use both.
What is AI share of voice?
AI share of voice is your share of all brand mentions across a set of AI answers compared with competitors. If AI names five brands across your prompts and you get 25% of the mentions, that is your share of voice.
It is the clearest way to benchmark against competitors. See AEO KPIs and the benchmarking question below.
How many prompts should I track?
Start with 30 to 50 prompts for a small business and 100 to 300 for larger brands or multiple product lines. Cover discovery, comparison, pricing and brand questions, weighted toward high-intent prompts.
Keep the set stable so results compare month to month. Our AEO prompt research guide shows how to build and maintain it.
How often should I check AI visibility?
Weekly or daily automated tracking with a monthly review works well. Because AI answers vary, more runs give more reliable averages, but decisions should be based on monthly trends, not single days.
Re-check immediately after big changes, such as a site launch or major new mention. See AEO KPIs and our best AEO tools.
What are the best AEO tools?
Popular options include Otterly.AI and Peec AI for affordable prompt tracking, Profound and Scrunch for enterprise analytics, Semrush’s AI toolkit and Ahrefs Brand Radar for teams already using those suites, plus AthenaHQ and others.
The right choice depends on budget, engines covered and prompt volume. Compare them in our best AEO tools and best AI visibility tools roundups.
Are there free AEO tools?
Yes. You can track manually using ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google in a clean browser, use GA4 for AI referrals, Bing Webmaster Tools and Search Console for search data, and free tiers or trials from AEO tools such as AthenaHQ.
Our free AEO tools guide lists the best free options and how to combine them.
Which is better, Peec AI or Otterly.AI?
It depends on your needs. Otterly.AI is cheaper to start, from around $29 a month for 15 prompts, and is simple for small teams. Peec AI, from around $95 a month for 50 prompts, offers more detailed source and competitor analysis that agencies often prefer.
See our detailed Peec AI vs Otterly vs Profound comparison for features and prices side by side.
How much do AI visibility tools cost?
Entry plans start at around $29 a month (Otterly.AI) and $95 a month (Peec AI). Semrush’s AI toolkit costs about $99 a month, Ahrefs Brand Radar starts around $199, Scrunch from about $300, and enterprise tools like Profound cost more. AthenaHQ has a free tier.
Prices change often, so check vendor sites. See best AEO tools for our latest comparison.
Can Semrush or Ahrefs track AI visibility?
Yes. Semrush offers an AI SEO toolkit that tracks brand visibility in ChatGPT, AI Overviews and other engines, and Ahrefs offers Brand Radar for AI mentions and citations. Both also flag AI Overviews in normal rank tracking.
They suit teams already using those suites. Dedicated tools may offer more prompt control. Compare in best AEO tools.
How do I track AI traffic in GA4?
Create a custom channel group or exploration that filters sessions by referrer, using a regex such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. Then report sessions, engagement and conversions from that segment.
Our step-by-step guide to tracking AI traffic in GA4 includes the exact regex and report setup.
Why doesn’t GA4 show all AI traffic?
Some AI apps do not pass a referrer, so visits appear as direct traffic. Clicks from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode show as normal Google organic traffic. Users who see your name and later search or type your URL are not credited to AI at all.
That is why AEO measurement also uses mention tracking and surveys. See tracking AI traffic in GA4 and AEO KPIs.
What is a good AEO result?
It depends on your starting point and category. A practical goal is steady growth in mention rate on your top prompts, being named in the top three when mentioned, positive sentiment and correct facts. For example, our client Appsrow ranked second of 18 Webflow agencies tracked over 90 days.
See our case studies and AEO KPIs for benchmarks.
How do I report AEO results to my manager?
Use a simple monthly report: mention rate and share of voice versus competitors, top prompts won and lost, accuracy issues fixed, AI referral sessions and leads from GA4, and next month’s actions. Show trends over time, not one-off screenshots.
Our AEO KPIs guide includes a report template.
Can I track AI visibility manually?
Yes, for a small prompt set. Use a spreadsheet with your prompts, run each in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google and Gemini once a month in a logged-out or clean session, and record whether you were named, your position, cited sources and any wrong facts.
It becomes slow beyond about 30 prompts. See free AEO tools for ways to make it easier.
What does sentiment mean in AI tracking?
Sentiment measures whether AI answers describe your brand positively, neutrally or negatively, often as a score. Being named with “expensive and slow support” can do more harm than not being named.
Track sentiment alongside mention rate, and trace negative themes back to their sources, such as reviews or forum threads. See AEO KPIs and brand mentions for AEO.
How do I know if AEO is driving leads?
Combine signals: AI referral conversions in GA4, a “How did you hear about us?” field with ChatGPT and AI options, mentions of AI tools in sales calls, and growth in branded search and direct traffic as mention rate rises.
No single source captures all of it. See tracking AI traffic in GA4 and AEO KPIs.
Does brand search volume show AEO success?
It is a useful signal. When AI engines mention you more, some users search your brand name afterwards rather than clicking a citation, so branded search in Search Console often rises.
It is not proof on its own, since other marketing affects it too, but it is a good supporting metric. See AEO KPIs.
How do I benchmark against competitors in AI answers?
Track the same prompt set for you and three to five competitors, then compare mention rate, share of voice, average position, sentiment and which sources each is cited from. This shows where they win and why.
Most AEO tools offer competitor tracking. Our AEO audit includes a competitor benchmark, and best AEO tools compares tools that do it.
AEO services, cost and Digital Tatva 20 questions
What does an AEO agency do?
An AEO agency improves how often and how accurately AI engines mention your brand. The work usually covers an AI visibility audit, prompt tracking, answer-first content, schema and entity fixes, earning third-party mentions, technical crawler access and monthly reporting.
Good agencies also tie the results to traffic and leads. See our AEO services for how Digital Tatva delivers this, and best AEO services agency for what to look for.
How do I choose an AEO agency?
Ask to see their own AI visibility and real client results, how they build and track a prompt set, which engines they cover, what is included each month and how they report. Prefer agencies that also understand SEO, because the two work together.
Avoid anyone guaranteeing specific mentions. Our guide on how to choose an AEO agency includes a question checklist.
How much do AEO services cost?
US market figures from 310 Creative put one-off AEO audits at about $1,500 to $5,000 and entry monthly retainers at about $1,000 to $3,500. Pricing in India is often lower, and costs rise with the number of engines, prompts, markets and content pieces included.
Our AEO pricing guide breaks down what drives cost, and our AEO services in India page covers local options.
Is AEO worth it?
It is worth it when your buyers research in AI tools before they buy, which now covers most B2B, SaaS, ecommerce and many local categories. The return comes from making shortlists you would otherwise miss and from better-qualified visits.
Start with an audit to see the size of the gap before committing to a retainer. See AEO statistics for the market data and our AEO audit for what you learn first.
What is included in an AEO retainer?
A typical retainer includes monthly prompt tracking across the main AI engines, answer-first content creation or updates, schema and entity improvements, outreach for brand mentions and citations, technical checks for crawler access, and a report with results and next steps.
Ask exactly how many prompts, pages and outreach placements are included. See AEO services and AEO pricing.
How long should an AEO contract be?
Plan for at least three to six months. Technical fixes and page updates can show quickly, but earning mentions and moving mention rate across a full prompt set takes several monthly cycles.
A good agency will still show progress each month and should not need a long lock-in to prove value. Read how to choose an AEO agency for contract questions to ask.
Can my SEO agency do AEO?
Possibly. Many SEO agencies are adding AEO, and the foundations overlap. Check whether they track prompts across AI engines, measure mention rate and citation share, and do outreach for third-party mentions, not just on-page SEO with a new label.
Our AEO vs SEO guide explains the differences, and how to choose an AEO agency lists the right questions.
What are the red flags when hiring an AEO agency?
Watch out for guaranteed mentions or positions, no clear prompt set or baseline, reports with screenshots but no trends, vague deliverables, no SEO knowledge, and tactics like fake reviews or spammy forum posts that can damage your reputation.
Ask for real examples of their work. Our guide on how to choose an AEO agency covers each red flag.
