Quick answer: AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the practice of making your brand and content easy for answer engines to find, understand and quote. Answer engines are tools that reply to a question with a direct answer instead of a list of links, such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and voice assistants. The goal of AEO is to be named and cited inside those answers.
For twenty years, being found online meant ranking in a list of ten blue links. Today a growing share of questions end with a single generated answer. ChatGPT reported 900 million weekly active users in February 2026, and Google said at I/O 2026 that AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users. AEO is how businesses stay visible in that new layer of search.
Key takeaways
- AEO targets mentions and citations in AI answers, not only rankings.
- Answer engines pick sources that answer the question clearly and are corroborated elsewhere.
- AEO builds on SEO: pages must be crawlable and indexed to be used.
- The core levers are answer-first content, consistent brand facts, schema, mentions and crawler access.
- Success is measured by mention rate, citation share and position across a tracked prompt set.
What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization. The term first described optimizing for featured snippets and voice assistants, which read out a single answer. Since 2023 it has expanded to cover generative AI tools that write full answers from several sources.
What is an answer engine?
An answer engine is any search tool that responds with an answer rather than a ranked list. The main ones today are:
| Answer engine | How it answers |
|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | A generated summary at the top of Google results, with supporting links |
| Google AI Mode | A conversational search mode with follow-up questions and links |
| ChatGPT search | Answers with cited sources from OpenAI’s search index |
| Perplexity | Answers built from live web results, with numbered citations |
| Gemini and Copilot | Assistants inside phones, browsers and work apps that answer with sources |
| Voice assistants | Spoken answers, usually from a single source |
How do answer engines choose what to say?
Answer engines retrieve pages related to the question, read them, and write an answer that draws on the most useful and trustworthy passages. In practice, three things decide whether your brand is included:
- Clarity: your page states the answer directly, with specific facts.
- Consistency: your name, offer, prices and locations match across your site and profiles.
- Corroboration: other trusted sites, reviews and lists mention you for the same need.
Technical access is the entry ticket. Google requires pages to be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear in AI Overviews, and OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not appear in ChatGPT search answers.
How is AEO different from SEO and GEO?
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages | Be the answer, named and cited | Be included in AI-written summaries |
| Main surfaces | Google and Bing results | AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, voice | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity |
| Measured by | Rankings, clicks | Mentions, citations, position | Share of voice in AI answers |
In practice AEO and GEO describe almost the same work. See AEO vs SEO and what GEO is for detail.
Why does AEO matter now?
AEO matters because answers are replacing clicks for many questions. Pew Research Center found that Google users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in about 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared. A February 2026 Ahrefs study of 300,000 keywords found that AI Overviews lowered the click-through rate of the top-ranking page by about 58%. If buyers get their shortlist from the answer, being in the answer is what counts.
How do you start with AEO?
- List your buyers’ questions from sales calls, support tickets and reviews.
- Test them in ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity and Gemini, and note who is named.
- Fix access: allow search and AI search crawlers, and check indexing.
- Rewrite key pages answer-first. See how to write answer-first content.
- Clean up brand facts and schema across your site and profiles.
- Earn mentions on the sites engines cite for your topics.
- Track monthly with a fixed prompt set. See AEO KPIs.

Frequently asked questions
Is AEO the same as SEO?
No. SEO aims to rank pages in search results, while AEO aims to get your brand named and cited inside AI answers. They share foundations, so most businesses do both.
Is AEO only for big brands?
No. Local businesses, startups and niche B2B firms often find AEO easier, because answers for specific questions draw on specific, well-structured pages and local profiles.
How long does AEO take to work?
Technical fixes can show within weeks. Content and mention work usually takes two to four months to change results across a full prompt set.
What is an AEO agency?
An AEO agency audits your visibility in AI answers and runs the content, technical and off-site work to improve it. See what to look for in an AEO agency.
