Quick answer: SEO (search engine optimization) aims to rank your pages in Google and Bing results so people click through. AEO (answer engine optimization) aims to get your brand named and cited inside the answers AI tools give, such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Gemini. They share the same foundations, so most businesses need both: SEO gets your pages indexed and trusted, and AEO turns that trust into mentions in AI answers.

“Is SEO dead?” is one of the most common questions we hear from clients. It is not. But the way buyers search has split into two paths: some still scan a results page, and a growing number ask an AI assistant and act on the answer. AEO and SEO are the two halves of being found on both paths.

Key takeaways

  • SEO wins a position in a list. AEO wins a place in the answer.
  • Both need crawlable, indexed, well-structured pages. Google says AI Overviews have no extra requirements beyond normal Search eligibility.
  • AEO puts more weight on direct answers, entity consistency and mentions on trusted third-party sources.
  • SEO is measured by rankings, clicks and traffic. AEO is measured by mention rate, citation share and position in answers.
  • A combined plan avoids paying twice for the same work.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

The main difference between AEO and SEO is the outcome each one targets. SEO targets a ranked link that a searcher may click. AEO targets a mention inside a generated answer, ideally with a citation link to your site. The table below compares them on the points that matter.

SEO AEO
Goal Rank pages in search results Be named and cited in AI answers
Where it shows Google and Bing results pages ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, voice assistants
Unit of success A position for a keyword A mention for a prompt
Main signals Relevance, links, page experience Direct answers, entity clarity, schema, trusted mentions
Content style Comprehensive pages for a keyword Answer-first sections that can be quoted on their own
Off-site work Backlinks Mentions and citations on sources AI engines use, with or without a link
Measured by Rankings, clicks, traffic Mention rate, citation share, position in answers, AI referrals

Does AEO replace SEO?

No, AEO does not replace SEO. AI search features still depend on search indexes. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. OpenAI says sites that block its OAI-SearchBot crawler will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Perplexity runs its own crawler, PerplexityBot, to index pages for its search engine.

In other words, if search engines cannot crawl and trust your pages, AI engines have nothing to quote. SEO is the foundation and AEO is what you build on top.

How is content written differently for AEO?

Content for AEO is written so that each section answers one question directly in the first sentence or two, then supports it with specifics. AI engines pull short passages, so a section has to make sense on its own.

  • Lead with the answer. “An AEO audit takes two to three weeks” beats a paragraph of background before the point.
  • Use the buyer’s wording. Headings written as real questions match the prompts people type.
  • Add specific facts. Prices, numbers, locations, comparisons and named sources give engines something concrete to cite.
  • Use tables for comparisons. Clean tables are easy for both readers and machines to parse.
  • Keep brand facts consistent. The same name, services, address and claims on your site and every profile.

Good SEO content already does much of this. AEO makes it a rule rather than a style choice.

What does AEO add beyond SEO?

AEO adds three things that a typical SEO plan does not cover well:

  1. Prompt research. Instead of only keyword volumes, AEO maps the full questions buyers ask AI tools, including comparisons and “best for” questions.
  2. Answer tracking. AEO measures whether each engine names you, how it describes you and which competitors appear instead. Rank trackers do not show this.
  3. Mention building. AI answers often draw on reviews, directories, comparison articles and forums. AEO targets those sources even when they do not give a backlink.

Should you invest in AEO or SEO first?

Invest in SEO foundations first if your site has crawl, indexing or speed problems, because AI engines cannot use pages they cannot reach. If your site is already healthy and ranks for core terms, start AEO now, because competitors that are named in AI answers today are building an advantage that is hard to catch up with.

Your situation Where to start
New site or technical problems SEO foundations, then AEO
Ranks well but missing from AI answers AEO audit and answer-first content
Named in AI answers but described wrongly Entity and brand fact clean-up
Local business Google Business Profile, reviews and local AEO together

Get one plan for both. Digital Tatva runs AEO and SEO together so the same work moves both rankings and AI mentions. Book an AEO audit or read what our AEO services include.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap heavily. AEO usually refers to being the answer in AI tools and voice assistants, while GEO (generative engine optimization) refers to visibility in AI-written summaries. In practice the work is nearly the same. See what GEO is.

Yes, indirectly. Backlinks help pages get crawled, indexed and trusted, which AI search features rely on. AEO also values unlinked brand mentions on trusted sites, which classic link building ignores.

Can a page rank first on Google and still be missing from AI answers?

Yes. AI engines combine several sources and may prefer a page that answers the exact question more directly, or a third-party review that mentions several brands. That is why AEO is tracked separately from rankings.

Does schema markup help AEO?

Schema helps engines understand who you are and what you offer, and Google advises that structured data should match the visible text on the page. It supports AEO but does not guarantee a mention on its own.
