Answer Engine Optimization
Make your brand easier for AI assistants to find, understand and name when buyers ask about your category.
Ideal client
Businesses whose buyers research with ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews or Perplexity before they make contact.
Request an AEO AuditWhat answer engine optimization is for
When a buyer asks an AI assistant which supplier, tool or agency to consider, the reply usually names a handful of brands and explains why. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making sure your business is one an engine can find, understand and describe accurately when that question is asked. It does not replace search engine optimization. It builds on it, because answer engines still read the web, and it adds a second question to every piece of work: would a system that summarises the web be confident repeating this?
Our AEO service is the umbrella engagement. It brings the audit, content, entity, technical and citation work into one plan with one owner, so that you are not paying three suppliers to fix the same problem from different directions. If you want the background first, our guide What is AEO? explains the concept in plain terms, and AEO vs SEO sets out where the two overlap.
Who it suits
AEO is worth the effort when your buyers research before they make contact and the research increasingly happens in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini or Microsoft Copilot. In our experience that describes most B2B services, software, ecommerce categories with considered purchases, and local services where people ask for a recommendation rather than a list. It is less useful if almost all of your sales come from repeat customers or a small number of named accounts who never search.
How an engagement runs
Every engagement follows the same four stages, because the order matters more than any single tactic.
- Discover. We build a prompt set from the questions your sales and support teams actually hear, agree it with you, and test it across the engines that matter in your market. The result is a baseline: where you are named, where competitors are named instead, how you are described and which sources the engines lean on.
- Diagnose. We trace each gap to a cause. Some are technical, such as pages AI crawlers cannot reach. Some are content gaps, where nobody has written a clear answer. Some are evidence gaps, where the engine has no independent source to confirm a claim you make about yourself.
- Optimize. We fix the foundations first, then publish and improve the pages that answer the highest-value questions, then work on outside mentions. You get a ranked plan, so you always know why a task is next.
- Measure. Each month we rerun the same prompts and report what changed, next to organic search performance and the referral traffic and enquiries that AI tools send.
What is included
The work is scoped to your market, but most AEO programmes include the following.
- A prompt set mapped to buying stages, from early research to shortlist and comparison questions
- An AI search visibility baseline across the engines your buyers use
- Content work on service, product, comparison and pricing pages so each important question has a direct, supported answer
- Entity clean-up so your name, offer, locations and people are described consistently everywhere
- Technical checks on crawler access, rendering and structured data
- Citation work on the third-party pages engines already trust for your topics
- A monthly report with the prompts gained and lost and what we are doing about each
An example of the thinking
Take a hypothetical B2B software company that sells scheduling tools for clinics. When we ask an assistant for the best scheduling software for a small clinic, it names three competitors and describes them using phrases lifted from comparison articles and review sites. The company’s own site describes its product in broad terms, its pricing sits behind a demo form, and it appears on none of the cited comparison pages. The plan writes itself: a clear, specific product page that says who the tool is for, a public pricing summary, an honest comparison page, and outreach to the review and list sites the engines quote. None of that is a trick. It is making the truth about the product easier to find and confirm.
What we will not promise
No one can guarantee that a particular assistant will name your brand, or keep naming it. The engines change their models, sources and interfaces often, and they answer the same question differently from one day to the next. What we can do is improve the inputs those systems draw on, measure the outputs consistently, and connect the work to outcomes you can see in your own analytics. If an agency promises guaranteed placement in ChatGPT, treat that as a warning sign. Our article on how to choose an AEO agency lists the questions worth asking.
Questions about AEO
How long does AEO take to show results?
Technical and structured data fixes can be picked up within weeks once pages are recrawled. Changes in how often you are named in answers usually take longer, often a few months, because they depend on new content being indexed and on outside sources mentioning you. We set expectations against your baseline in the first month rather than quoting a universal timeline.
Do I still need SEO if I invest in AEO?
Yes. Most answer engines retrieve web pages through a search index before they write an answer, so pages that cannot be crawled, indexed or trusted in search are unlikely to be cited. AEO adds answer-first content, entity clarity and citation work on top of sound SEO.
Which engines do you track?
We agree the list with you based on your market. It usually includes ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, and sometimes Claude.
How is AEO priced?
Most clients start with a fixed-fee audit and then move to a monthly programme sized to the number of prompts, markets and pages involved. Our guide to AEO pricing explains the common models. We quote after we have seen your site.
