Generative Engine Optimization
Shape the sources that generative answers are built from, so your facts and point of view are part of the synthesis.
Ideal client
Brands in categories where AI tools write long comparative answers drawn from many sources.
Request an AEO AuditWhy generative answers need their own discipline
Some AI answers are short: a name, a number, a definition. Others are long and comparative. Ask an assistant how to choose a payroll provider for a 40-person company, or what to look for in an industrial coating supplier, and it will write several paragraphs that blend a dozen sources into one view of the market. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is concerned with that second kind of answer. The goal is for your evidence, your framing and your brand to be among the material the answer is assembled from.
The term comes from academic work. Researchers from Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi published GEO: Generative Engine Optimization in 2023, testing how changes to a source page affected its visibility in generated answers. On their benchmark, adding things like relevant statistics, quotations and citations to credible sources improved visibility noticeably, while keyword stuffing did not help. Real engines are more complex than any benchmark, but the direction matches what we see in practice: engines prefer sources that make specific, checkable claims.
How GEO differs from our AEO work
The two overlap heavily, which is why we run them as one plan for most clients. The difference is emphasis. Answer engine optimization focuses on being named and described correctly for the questions buyers ask. GEO focuses on the substance underneath: whether your site and the wider web contain enough original, well-structured evidence that a model writing a long answer reaches for it. If AEO asks “are we in the answer?”, GEO asks “is our thinking in the answer, and is it credited to us?”
What the work involves
A source map for your topics
We run the long-form questions in your category and record which domains and page types are cited. In most markets a small number of sources do most of the work: a few industry publications, a couple of comparison sites, documentation pages, forums and the occasional government or standards body. That map tells us where your evidence needs to live.
Evidence-led content on your own site
We help you publish the material other people cite: original data from your own operations, clear methodology pages, definitions, pricing explanations, decision frameworks and comparisons that are fair to competitors. Each page leads with a direct answer and backs it with specifics. Our guide to answer-first content shows the structure we use.
Third-party coverage
Generated answers rarely rely on a brand’s own site alone. We plan expert commentary, contributed articles, data stories and listings in the places on your source map, so that independent sources repeat the facts you want engines to know. This connects closely to our AI citation optimization service.
Before and after comparisons
Because generative answers vary from one run to the next, we compare sets of answers rather than single screenshots. You see how the framing of your category changes over time, which sources move in and out, and whether your evidence is being used.
Typical deliverables
- Source map for your priority topics and engines
- Evidence audit of your existing content, with gaps ranked by value
- Briefs and edits for data, methodology and comparison pages
- Coverage plan for publications and sites on the source map
- Quarterly answer comparison report
Who it suits
GEO is most valuable in categories where buyers ask open, comparative questions and the answers are long: B2B software, professional services, healthcare and education providers, industrial suppliers and considered consumer purchases. It is particularly useful for companies that have genuine expertise or data but have never packaged it in a form others can cite.
Questions about GEO
Is GEO different from AEO, or just a new name?
The terms are often used interchangeably. We use GEO for the work on long, multi-source generated answers and the evidence they draw on, and AEO for the broader practice of appearing correctly in AI answers. In practice we plan them together.
Do statistics and quotes really help?
Research on generative engines found that pages with relevant statistics, quotations and citations tended to be more visible in generated answers on their test set. We treat that as a reason to publish specific, checkable claims, not as a formula. Invented or padded statistics damage trust and we never add them.
Can you make an AI tool repeat our messaging word for word?
No, and you would not want it to. Engines paraphrase and combine sources. The realistic goal is that the facts are right, your brand is credited, and your perspective is represented fairly.
