ChatGPT Plus costs Rs 1,999 per month in India, including 18% GST, when you pay in rupees, according to OpenAI’s rupee pricing as reported at launch and current app store price trackers. That is the rupee version of the $20 US price. The cheapest official way to pay is in INR by UPI or an Indian card on chatgpt.com, which avoids foreign exchange markups. If Rs 1,999 is too much, ChatGPT Go at Rs 399 per month or the free plan (now on GPT-6 Luna) may be enough.

Below we break down every ChatGPT price in India, how GST and card fees work, the payment methods OpenAI supports, and six legitimate ways to pay less.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT Plus is Rs 1,999 per month in India including GST (about Rs 1,694 before tax). In the US it is $20 per month.
  • OpenAI supports UPI in India, but only for Go and Plus. Pro and Business need a card.
  • ChatGPT Go costs Rs 399 per month and runs GPT-6 Luna; Free also runs GPT-6 Luna with fewer extras.
  • Plus now includes GPT-6 Sol in Chat and GPT-6 Astra inside ChatGPT Work and Codex.
  • Avoid cheap “shared Plus” resellers: they break OpenAI’s terms and put your data at risk.

ChatGPT prices in India at a glance

OpenAI bills India in rupees and lists India as a local currency country in its official payment methods help article. It does not print INR prices in its help center, so the rupee figures below come from OpenAI’s India launch announcements as reported in the press and from app store listings. We could not read them on an official OpenAI page, so confirm the price at checkout.

Plan India price US price UPI allowed Main model
Free Rs 0 $0 Not needed GPT-6 Luna
Go Rs 399/month $8/month Yes GPT-6 Luna
Plus Rs 1,999/month (incl. GST) $20/month Yes GPT-6 Sol
Pro Rs 19,900/month reported for the old single tier; current tier prices not confirmed $100, $200 or $500/month No GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6 Pro on Astra
Business No INR price published; check at checkout $25/user/month ($20 annual) No GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6 Pro

What you get for Rs 1,999 a month

Plus is the plan most Indian professionals end up on, and it got stronger in October 2026. Since 7 October, Plus users chat with GPT-6 Sol at three thinking levels: Instant, Medium and High. Plus also includes GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI’s flagship model, inside ChatGPT Work and Codex. Our explainer on GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna covers the differences.

  • Expanded messages and uploads compared with Free and Go.
  • Intelligent UI answers with charts, buttons and small tools (also on Free and Go).
  • ChatGPT Work for multi-step tasks and finished files, plus Codex for coding.
  • Deep research, more complex image creation, projects, scheduled tasks and voice.
  • Early access to new features and no ads (OpenAI is testing ads on Free and Go in the US).

Plus does not include the Extra High or Pro thinking levels, and OpenAI warns that Plus may still hit message caps at busy times. Our guide to ChatGPT limits by plan explains how those work.

Who it is for: freelancers, marketers, founders, consultants and serious students who use ChatGPT most days. Who should skip it: anyone who uses it a few times a week for quick answers. Free or Go will do.

How GST and card fees change what you pay

The Rs 1,999 Plus price is reported to include 18% GST. Working backwards, Rs 1,999 divided by 1.18 is about Rs 1,694 before tax, and the GST portion is about Rs 305. If you are a GST-registered business, ask your accountant whether you can claim input tax credit, and make sure your invoice shows the right details.

Paying the US price of $20 on an international card works differently. Your bank converts the amount at its own exchange rate and usually adds a foreign transaction markup of a few percent, plus GST on that markup. The final rupee amount can change month to month with the exchange rate. That is why paying in rupees is usually simpler and more predictable.

Watch out: Existing subscribers keep their current billing currency. OpenAI says that to switch to INR you must cancel and re-subscribe after your current billing period ends. Do not cancel mid-cycle or you may lose the remaining days.

How to pay for ChatGPT Plus in India

OpenAI’s help center lists these options for India:

  • Credit and debit cards work in all countries, including Indian Visa, Mastercard and RuPay cards that allow online or recurring payments.
  • UPI is available in India for Go and Plus only. Pro and Business are excluded.
  • Apple App Store and Google Play subscriptions are billed by Apple or Google in local currency and managed in your phone’s subscription settings.

Step by step: subscribe to Plus with UPI

  1. Open ChatGPT on the web. Go to chatgpt.com in a browser and sign in. Web checkout gives you the UPI option and keeps the subscription with OpenAI rather than an app store.
  2. Choose Upgrade plan. Open the menu from your profile and select the option to upgrade. Pick Plus from the list of plans.
  3. Check the price is in rupees. The checkout should show the INR amount. If you see USD, you may be on an older subscription currency or signed in from a different region.
  4. Select UPI and approve the mandate. Enter your UPI ID or scan the code, then approve the recurring payment request in your UPI app (such as Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm).
  5. Save the invoice. Download the receipt from your account settings for your records or GST claims.

Tip: Set a calendar reminder two days before renewal. UPI autopay mandates can fail if your bank’s limit or the mandate itself has expired, and ChatGPT will drop you back to Free until payment goes through.

Six cheapest ways to get ChatGPT Plus features in India

1. Pay in rupees, not dollars

Paying Rs 1,999 in INR avoids foreign exchange markup and conversion swings. It is the simplest saving and needs no trade-offs.

2. Start with Go at Rs 399

Go costs about a fifth of Plus. It runs GPT-6 Luna with “Think,” and gives higher limits than Free for images, uploads and data analysis, plus longer memory, projects and tasks. It does not include GPT-6 Sol or Pro models, and third-party sources say agent-style features and full deep research are missing. For students and light users, Go is often enough.

3. Use the free plan first

Free now runs GPT-6 Luna with unlimited everyday text chats, subject to safeguards, and includes Intelligent UI. Use it for two weeks and note what you actually miss before paying. Our list of free alternatives to ChatGPT Plus covers other no-cost options.

4. Use student offers from rivals

OpenAI’s current student promotion (four free months of Plus) is for US students only. Google, however, offers eligible university students in India a free year of Google AI Plus until 31 December 2026, after which it costs Rs 399 per month. Our guide to AI student discounts lists every current offer.

5. Pay for only one AI subscription

Many people pay for ChatGPT Plus and a second assistant. Pick one. Claude Pro is reported at about Rs 2,000 per month in India and Google AI Pro is Rs 1,950 per month, so they cost about the same as Plus. Compare them in our Claude pricing and Gemini pricing guides, then keep the one that fits your work.

6. Use Business only if you need team features

ChatGPT Business costs $20 per user per month on annual billing ($25 monthly) with a two-seat minimum. For two people that is the same $40 a month as two Plus plans, so it saves money only if you value admin controls, shared workspace features and OpenAI’s no-training commitment for business data. Our explainer on when AI team plans actually save money runs the numbers.

Save money: Cancelling and resubscribing only in the months you have heavy work can halve your yearly spend. A freelancer who needs Plus for six busy months pays about Rs 11,994 instead of Rs 23,988. More ideas are in our guide to saving money on AI subscriptions.

Is there an annual ChatGPT Plus plan in India?

OpenAI has not confirmed an annual Plus price, in India or the US. Twelve months at Rs 1,999 comes to Rs 23,988 per year. By comparison, Claude Pro has an official annual option in USD ($17 per month billed yearly). If annual billing matters to you, read our annual vs monthly AI plans guide before committing anywhere.

What about free ChatGPT Go in India?

In November 2025 OpenAI announced 12 months of ChatGPT Go free for users in India, with a Re 1 UPI or Rs 2 card verification charge. Third-party price trackers say that launch promotion has ended, and OpenAI’s India promotion page showed no active terms when last checked. If you claimed it, check your renewal date in Settings so the Rs 399 charge does not surprise you.

Avoid these “cheap ChatGPT Plus” offers

Search for ChatGPT Plus in India and you will find sellers offering Plus for a few hundred rupees by UPI or WhatsApp. These usually work by sharing one account among many people or reselling access you do not control.

  • Shared accounts break OpenAI’s terms and can be banned without notice, taking your money with them.
  • Everyone on the account can see your chats, uploaded files and memory.
  • You get no invoice for GST claims and no support if access stops.

Pay OpenAI directly, or use the free plan or Go instead. If you want more power for less money, our guide to AI subscriptions worth paying for and our Grok vs ChatGPT comparison cover legitimate alternatives.

Which ChatGPT plan should Indian users pick?

You are… Best plan Monthly cost
A school or college student Free, or Go for more uploads Rs 0 to Rs 399
An occasional user Free Rs 0
A freelancer, marketer or consultant Plus, paid in INR by UPI Rs 1,999
A developer using Codex daily Plus, Pro only if limits bite Rs 1,999 and up
A small team or agency Business (annual) $20 per user, 2-seat minimum

Frequently asked questions

What is the ChatGPT Plus price in India?

ChatGPT Plus costs Rs 1,999 per month in India, including 18% GST, when billed in rupees. That is about Rs 1,694 before tax. If you pay the $20 US price on an international card, your bank converts it and may add a foreign transaction fee, so the rupee amount varies. OpenAI’s help center does not list INR prices, so confirm at checkout.

Can I pay for ChatGPT Plus with UPI?

Yes. OpenAI’s help center lists UPI as a payment method in India for the Go and Plus plans. Pro and Business plans are not eligible for UPI and need a card. Subscribe on chatgpt.com in a browser, choose Plus, select UPI at checkout and approve the recurring mandate in your UPI app.

Is ChatGPT Plus worth Rs 1,999 a month?

If you use ChatGPT for work most days, usually yes. Plus gives GPT-6 Sol with Medium and High thinking, GPT-6 Astra inside Work and Codex, deep research and higher limits. If you only ask quick questions a few times a week, the free plan or Go at Rs 399 per month offers better value.

Is ChatGPT Go cheaper than Plus in India?

Yes, much cheaper. ChatGPT Go costs Rs 399 per month, about a fifth of Plus. It runs GPT-6 Luna, offers more uploads, images and memory than Free, and supports UPI. It lacks GPT-6 Sol thinking levels and Pro models. Go suits students and light users; Plus suits professionals who need deeper reasoning.

Is there a student discount on ChatGPT Plus in India?

Not currently. OpenAI’s back-to-school offer of four free months of Plus is limited to students at eligible US institutions and must be claimed by 31 October 2026. Indian students can use the free plan, Go at Rs 399, or Google’s free year of Google AI Plus for eligible university students in India.

Verdict: the cheapest smart way to get ChatGPT Plus in India

Pay Rs 1,999 a month in rupees by UPI on chatgpt.com if you use ChatGPT for work most days. It is the cleanest, cheapest official route, with no forex markup and a proper invoice. If you are a student or light user, start with Free or Go at Rs 399, and only upgrade when you keep hitting limits. Skip shared-account resellers entirely. OpenAI has not published INR prices in its help center and changes plans often, so confirm the current price at checkout or on the official ChatGPT pricing page before you subscribe.
