AI team plans rarely save money on price alone. ChatGPT Business and Claude Team Standard seats cost $25 per user per month, or $20 on annual billing, which is the same as or more than an individual $20 plan. Team seats pay off when you need shared workspaces, admin and billing controls, a no-training guarantee for company data, or more usage per dollar, and on annual billing Claude Team actually gives more usage per dollar than Claude Pro.
This guide explains how the main AI team plans are priced in October 2026, runs the seat math for small teams, flags the hidden costs, and shows when business seats beat a pile of personal subscriptions.
Key takeaways
- ChatGPT Business and Claude Team both charge $25 per seat monthly or $20 annually for Standard seats, and $125 or $100 for Premium seats, with a two-seat minimum.
- Five ChatGPT users cost $100 a month on Plus or on annual Business Standard, so annual Business gives you admin controls and data protection at no extra cost.
- Claude Team Standard on annual billing works out to $16 per “Pro’s worth” of usage, versus $17 for Pro on annual billing and $20 for Max 5x.
- Mixing seat types saves the most: a team of 8 on Claude with 6 Standard and 2 Premium seats pays $320 a month instead of $800 for all Premium.
- If your company already pays for Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, check the AI included there before buying a second team plan.

What you actually pay for with a team plan
A business seat is not just a personal plan with a different invoice. The extras are what you are buying:
- Data protection. OpenAI states it does not train on ChatGPT Business workspace data. That alone is why many companies ban personal accounts for client work.
- Central billing and admin. One invoice, the ability to add and remove users, and spend controls. When someone leaves, their account and chats stay with the company.
- Shared knowledge. ChatGPT Business includes Company Knowledge, shared Projects and GPTs. Claude Team includes Projects and knowledge bases, plus Claude Code on both seat types.
- More usage per seat. Claude Team Standard gives 1.25x Pro’s per-session usage, and Premium gives 6.25x, both with a weekly limit.
If none of these matter to you, individual plans are usually cheaper or equal. If two or more matter, team plans are worth a serious look. Pair any rollout with a written policy; our AI usage policy template is a good starting point.
ChatGPT Business: when it saves money
ChatGPT Business (formerly Team) has two seat types. Standard costs $25 per user monthly or $20 annually. Premium costs $125 monthly or $100 annually and adds higher usage limits. The minimum is two seats in total, mixed however you like. Both include ChatGPT Work, Codex, GPTs, Projects, Apps, Company Knowledge, ChatGPT Agent and deep research.
The seat math for a five-person team
- Five ChatGPT Plus subscriptions: 5 x $20 = $100 a month, or $1,200 a year.
- Five Business Standard seats, annual: 5 x $20 = $100 a month, or $1,200 a year.
- Five Business Standard seats, monthly: 5 x $25 = $125 a month, or $1,500 a year.
On annual billing, Business costs exactly the same as Plus, and you get admin controls, the no-training commitment and Company Knowledge. Business Standard also includes a shared 15 messages a month across GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, which Plus does not include. For a team that will keep ChatGPT all year, annual Business is the clear choice.
Premium seat vs Pro
A Business Premium seat at $100 annually gets a shared 50 messages a week across GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. The individual Pro $100 plan has the same 50-message weekly allowance. So for one power user inside a company, Premium costs the same as Pro on annual billing while keeping the account under company control. On monthly billing, Premium costs $25 more.
Save money: Nonprofits can get discounts of up to 75% on ChatGPT Business and Enterprise. At $20 a seat annually, that could bring a seat down to about $5 if your organization qualifies for the full discount.
Claude Team: more usage per dollar than Pro
Claude Team pricing mirrors ChatGPT’s: Standard seats are $25 monthly or $20 annually, and Premium seats are $125 or $100, for 2 to 150 seats. The difference is that Anthropic publishes usage multiples, so you can compare cost per unit of usage.
| Claude plan | Price per month | Usage vs Pro (per session) | Cost per “Pro’s worth” of usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro, monthly | $20 | 1x | $20 / 1 = $20.00 |
| Pro, annual | $17 | 1x | $17 / 1 = $17.00 |
| Team Standard, monthly | $25 | 1.25x | $25 / 1.25 = $20.00 |
| Team Standard, annual | $20 | 1.25x | $20 / 1.25 = $16.00 |
| Team Premium, annual | $100 | 6.25x | $100 / 6.25 = $16.00 |
| Max 5x | $100 | 5x | $100 / 5 = $20.00 |
| Max 20x | $200 | 20x | $200 / 20 = $10.00 |
On annual billing, both Team seat types deliver usage at $16 per Pro-equivalent, cheaper than Pro ($17) and Max 5x ($20). Only Max 20x is cheaper per unit, and only if you actually use 20 times Pro’s allowance. All plans also have weekly limits, so treat these as per-session comparisons. Our Claude usage limits guide explains how sessions and weekly caps interact.
Mixing seat types for an eight-person team
Say six people use Claude for everyday writing and two developers use Claude Code all day.
- All Premium, annual: 8 x $100 = $800 a month.
- Mixed, annual: (6 x $20) + (2 x $100) = $120 + $200 = $320 a month.
- Saving: $480 a month, or $5,760 a year.
In India, press reports from July 2026 list Team Standard at Rs 2,399 per user per month on annual billing (Rs 2,999 monthly) and Premium at Rs 11,999 annually (Rs 14,999 monthly), including GST. The same mixed team would be (6 x Rs 2,399) + (2 x Rs 11,999) = Rs 14,394 + Rs 23,998 = Rs 38,392 a month. Confirm rupee prices at checkout, since the official pricing page shows USD.
Coding team plans: GitHub Copilot and Cursor
Developer tools follow a different pattern: team seats usually cost more per unit of usage, and you pay for pooling and control.
GitHub Copilot Business
Since June 2026, Copilot bills in AI Credits, where one credit equals $0.01. Pro is $10 a month with 1,500 credits, and Business is $19 per seat with 1,900 credits pooled across the organization. Per credit, that is $10 / 1,500 = about 0.67 cents on Pro versus $19 / 1,900 = 1 cent on Business. You pay a premium for pooled credits, policy controls and admin, which matters when light and heavy users share one budget. Our GitHub Copilot pricing guide has the full credit breakdown.
Cursor Teams
Cursor Teams Standard costs $40 per user per month, double Pro’s $20, with Premium at $120 for 5x Standard agent limits. It adds centralized billing, SSO, usage analytics, team-wide privacy mode and Bugbot code reviews. For a solo developer, it never saves money. For a company that must enforce privacy mode, it is the only sensible option. See our Cursor pricing guide for details.
Check the AI you already pay for
Before buying any new team plan, look at your existing suite. Gemini is now bundled into Google Workspace business plans, with Gemini in Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet and Chat on Standard and Plus. Third-party pricing pages list Workspace at around $7, $14 and $22 per user per month on annual billing for Starter, Standard and Plus, so a team already on Workspace may have most of what it needs. Our guide on how to use Gemini in Google Workspace shows what is included.
Microsoft shops have a similar choice. Microsoft 365 Copilot Business is a $21 per user add-on on annual billing (shown at $18 on promotion), and Microsoft also sells bundles such as Business Standard with Copilot at $23.50 per user annually. Adding ChatGPT Business on top of either means paying for AI twice.
Other team tools follow the same logic. Notion Business ($20 monthly, about $16 annually) includes full Notion AI, which Plus does not, and Canva Business (US$250 a year per person, or Rs 6,800 in India) bills only for members who accept the invite. Read our guides to Notion AI pricing and Canva pricing before you add seats.
Hidden costs of AI team plans
- Seat minimums. ChatGPT Business and Claude Team both require at least two seats. A solo founder pays for a seat they do not use.
- Idle seats. Most plans bill for every assigned seat, used or not. Review active users every quarter and remove anyone who has not logged in.
- Annual lock-in. The $20 annual rates require a year’s commitment. If your headcount or tool preference changes, you may be stuck. Our guide to annual vs monthly AI plans covers the trade-off.
- Usage-based extras. Claude Enterprise is $20 per seat billed annually plus usage at API rates, so heavy teams can spend far more than the seat price. Copilot and Cursor overage is also billed at usage rates.
- Promotional prices. Microsoft’s $18 Copilot Business price is a promotion and may end. Budget at the $21 list price.
Should your team buy business seats? A quick checklist
- Count real users. List who uses AI weekly. Occasional users can stay on free plans.
- Check data rules. If staff handle client or customer data, a team plan with a no-training commitment is usually required by contracts or common sense.
- Check existing suites. Confirm what Workspace or Microsoft 365 already includes.
- Split users by intensity. Give Standard seats to most people and Premium seats only to the heaviest users.
- Price monthly first, then annual. Run a month or two on monthly billing to learn real usage, then switch to annual for the 20% lower seat price.
- Measure the payback. Track hours saved per person. Our guide on how to measure AI ROI shows a simple method.

Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT Business cheaper than ChatGPT Plus?
Not cheaper, but the same on annual billing. A Business Standard seat costs $20 per user per month billed annually, which matches Plus at $20. On monthly billing it costs $25. The difference is what you get: admin controls, Company Knowledge, a no-training commitment and a small allowance of GPT-6 Pro messages. There is a two-seat minimum.
How many seats do I need for Claude Team?
Claude Team requires a minimum of 2 seats and supports up to 150. You can mix Standard seats ($25 monthly, $20 annually) and Premium seats ($125 monthly, $100 annually). Most teams give Standard seats to everyday users and reserve Premium for heavy Claude Code users, which keeps the bill far lower than buying Premium for everyone.
Are AI team plans worth it for a two-person business?
Often, yes, if you handle client data. Two ChatGPT Business Standard seats cost $40 a month on annual billing, the same as two Plus plans, but add data protection and shared workspaces. If you only use AI for personal drafting and never share chats, two individual plans give you more flexibility to cancel month by month.
How much does Claude Team cost in India?
Press reports from July 2026 list Claude Team Standard at Rs 2,399 per user per month on annual billing and Rs 2,999 monthly, with Premium at Rs 11,999 annually and Rs 14,999 monthly, all including GST. The official pricing page shows USD ($20 to $25 Standard, $100 to $125 Premium), so confirm the rupee price at checkout.
Do I need ChatGPT Business if we use Google Workspace?
Maybe not. Workspace business plans now bundle Gemini, including Gemini in Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet and Chat on Standard and Plus. Try Gemini for a month first. Buy ChatGPT Business only for people who need features Gemini lacks, rather than for the whole company.
Our verdict: buy team seats for control, then optimize the mix
AI team plans are priced for control, not discounts, but on annual billing they often cost the same as individual plans and sometimes deliver more usage per dollar, as Claude Team does. Buy them when data protection, central billing or shared knowledge matter, give Premium seats only to the heaviest users, and check what Workspace or Microsoft 365 already includes before adding anything. Seat prices and usage limits change often, so confirm current pricing on each vendor’s site before you sign an annual contract.
