- Our verdict
ChatGPT is the better all-rounder in 2026 if you want one app for chat, image creation, voice, custom GPTs and agents. Claude is the better pick if most of your work is writing, editing, long documents or serious coding, because its drafts need fewer edits and its paid plans bundle Claude Code. Both start at $20 per month for the main paid tier, so the choice comes down to how you work, not price.
This comparison looks at ChatGPT (running the GPT-6 and GPT-5.6 families) against Claude (running Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 4.5) across writing quality, coding, research, features, pricing, usage limits and privacy. Every price below comes from official pages checked in September 2026.
Key takeaways
- ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro both cost $20/month, but Claude Pro drops to $17/month on annual billing, and ChatGPT has a cheaper $8/month Go plan.
- Claude is our pick for long-form writing, editing and working with large documents, with up to 1M tokens of context on Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5.
- ChatGPT wins on breadth: image creation, voice, custom GPTs, agent mode, scheduled tasks and a bigger ecosystem of third-party integrations.
- For developers, both bundle a coding agent (Codex in ChatGPT, Claude Code in Claude Pro and above), and both share limits between chat and coding.
- Teams pay the same on both: $25 per seat monthly or $20 annually for standard seats, with a 2-seat minimum.

Writing quality: which AI writes better?
For writing, Claude is still the stronger choice for most marketers, founders and freelancers. In everyday use, Claude’s long drafts read more naturally, follow a brief more closely and need fewer rounds of cleanup. It is also good at keeping a consistent voice across a long piece, which matters for blog posts, sales pages and reports.
ChatGPT writes well too, and GPT-6 Astra is a clear step up on reasoning-heavy writing like strategy memos. Where ChatGPT tends to slip is style: it leans toward familiar phrasing and heavy formatting unless you tell it otherwise. With a good prompt and a custom instruction, the gap narrows a lot.
Editing and rewriting
Claude shines when you paste in an existing draft and ask for a tighter version. It tends to keep your meaning and cut filler rather than rewrite everything in its own voice. If editing is a big part of your week, our list of Claude prompts for writing and editing gives you ready-made instructions to start with.
Short-form marketing copy
For ad variations, subject lines and social captions, the two are close. ChatGPT is quick at producing many options, and its custom GPTs make it easy to save a brand voice for repeat use. For ideas, try our collection of ChatGPT prompts for marketing.
Tip: Whichever tool you pick, give it a sample of your own writing and a short list of words to avoid. Both assistants follow examples far better than abstract instructions like “sound human”.
Coding: Codex vs Claude Code
Both companies now bundle a serious coding agent into their consumer plans, so developers no longer need a separate subscription to get started.
ChatGPT and Codex: Codex is included in every ChatGPT plan, from Free and Go up to Pro and Business. Limits run in 5-hour windows and depend on the model. OpenAI’s own estimates for Plus and Business are roughly 5 to 45 messages per window on GPT-6 Astra, 15 to 160 on GPT-6.1 Sol, and 350 to 3,000 on GPT-6 Luna. ChatGPT and Codex share the same usage limits.
Claude and Claude Code: Claude Code comes with Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, but not the Free plan. It shares one usage pool with Claude chat, and most recent models support a 1M token context in Claude Code, which helps on large codebases. Many developers prefer Claude for multi-file refactors and careful, step-by-step changes.
Our view: Claude Code is the better experience for heavy, agent-style coding, while Codex is the easier on-ramp because even free users can try it. If you code all day and keep hitting limits, compare Claude Pro vs Max before upgrading. For editor-based tools, our Cursor vs GitHub Copilot comparison covers the IDE side.
Research, files and long documents
Both assistants search the web, read uploaded files and offer deep research modes. The biggest practical difference is how much text each can hold in one conversation.
Context window
Claude’s base context window on paid plans is 200K tokens, rising to 1M tokens on Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Opus 5 and Fable 5.1. That means you can drop in a long contract, a full research report or a large chunk of a codebase and ask questions across all of it.
OpenAI does not publish per-plan context windows for ChatGPT. Third-party testing puts Plus at around 54K tokens for instant models and around 256K for reasoning models, but treat those figures as estimates. If you are not sure what a token or a context window is, start with our plain-English guide to how much text AI can handle.
Deep research
ChatGPT Plus includes expanded deep research, and Pro plans get the maximum. Claude offers a Research feature on paid plans, but Anthropic does not publish a quota. For fact-heavy research with sources, some readers do better with a search-first tool; our Perplexity vs ChatGPT comparison explains when that makes sense.
Features and ecosystem
This is where ChatGPT pulls ahead. It is a broader product, and if you want one assistant for many kinds of tasks, that breadth is worth a lot.
| Feature | ChatGPT | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Image creation | Yes (limited on Free, more on Plus) | No |
| Custom assistants | Custom GPTs | Projects with instructions and knowledge |
| Agents and tasks | Agent mode, scheduled tasks | Task scheduling on Pro, Chrome extension |
| Interactive outputs | Projects, Library and file outputs | Artifacts, plus Claude Design, Slides and Docs |
| Voice | Voice chats (limited on Free) | Check the Claude apps for current voice support |
| App connections | Apps and Company Knowledge on Business | Connectors on all plans, including Free |
| Work and browser tools | ChatGPT Work (limited on Free desktop) | Chrome and Microsoft 365 extensions on Pro |
ChatGPT’s custom GPTs are a real advantage for small teams that want reusable assistants. Our step-by-step guide on how to create a custom GPT shows how. Claude’s answer is Projects, which let you store files and instructions for a client or topic; see how to use Claude Projects to set them up well.
Note: Sora video generation is not an option in 2026. OpenAI discontinued the Sora app in April 2026 and the Sora API in September 2026, so neither assistant is a video tool today.
ChatGPT vs Claude pricing compared
On the main paid tier, the two cost the same. The differences show up at the low end (ChatGPT Go), on annual billing (Claude is cheaper) and at the top end.

| Budget | Go: $8/month | None |
| Standard | Plus: $20/month | Pro: $20/month or $17/month annual ($200/year) |
| Power user | Pro 100: $100, Pro 200: $200, Pro 500: $500 | Max 5x: $100, Max 20x: $200 |

Prices in India
Anthropic introduced rupee pricing in July 2026, and press reports list Claude Pro at about Rs 2,000/month including GST, with Max from about Rs 11,999/month. For ChatGPT, Go launched in India at Rs 399/month in 2025, and a third-party source lists Plus at about Rs 1,999/month including GST. Neither company showed INR prices on the pages we checked, so confirm the figure at checkout.

Save money: If you already know you will use Claude for a year, annual Pro billing saves $40 compared with paying $20 monthly. On ChatGPT, try Go at $8/month first if you mostly need everyday chat and do not need GPT-5.6 Sol or agent mode.
Usage limits: which runs out first?
Neither company offers truly unlimited use on its $20 plan. How the limits work is different, though.
Claude Pro uses a session limit that resets every five hours, with possible weekly caps on top. Anthropic’s rough guide is around 45 messages per five hours for short conversations, but long chats, big attachments and Opus use drain it faster. Chat and Claude Code draw from the same pool. Our guide to Claude usage limits explains how to make them last.
ChatGPT Plus offers expanded messages, but OpenAI says Plus may still hit caps at peak times and does not publish exact numbers. Free users get unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, which is generous for light users. See ChatGPT limits by plan for the details and workarounds.
In practice, heavy Claude users hit limits sooner, especially when working with long documents. ChatGPT’s lighter models give casual users more headroom before they notice any cap.
Privacy and business use
Both companies offer business plans where your workspace data is not used for training. OpenAI states this directly for ChatGPT Business, which includes admin controls, centralized billing and spend controls. Claude Team includes Claude Code, all models, Projects and knowledge bases for every seat, with 2 to 150 seats.
Seat prices are identical, so the decision rests on the tools your team needs. If you are weighing whether a team plan beats several individual subscriptions, our guide to when AI team plans actually save money runs the numbers. Before rolling out either tool, set ground rules with an AI usage policy for your team.
OpenAI has said it will test ads on ChatGPT Free and Go in the US. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise stay ad-free.

Frequently asked questions
Is Claude better than ChatGPT for writing?
For most long-form writing, yes. Claude’s drafts tend to follow a brief more closely, keep a consistent voice and need less editing, especially for blog posts, reports and sales pages. ChatGPT is very capable too, and with clear style instructions the gap shrinks. For short marketing copy and many quick variations, the two are close, and ChatGPT’s custom GPTs make repeat tasks easier.
Is ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro worth $20 a month?
Either is worth it if you use AI most working days. ChatGPT Plus is better value if you want images, voice, agent mode and custom GPTs in one place. Claude Pro is better value if you write or code a lot, because it includes Claude Code and Opus models, and it drops to $17/month on annual billing. Light users can stay on the free plans.
Is there a free version of ChatGPT and Claude?
Yes, both have free plans. ChatGPT Free offers unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna plus limited uploads, image creation, voice and deep research. Claude Free includes Sonnet and Haiku models, web search, file creation, Artifacts and connectors, but no Opus and no Claude Code. ChatGPT’s free plan is more generous for casual everyday use.
How much do ChatGPT and Claude cost in India?
Press reports list Claude Pro at about Rs 2,000/month including GST since Anthropic added rupee pricing in July 2026. ChatGPT Go launched in India at Rs 399/month, and a third-party source lists Plus at about Rs 1,999/month including GST. Official pages showed USD when we checked, so confirm the rupee price at checkout before you subscribe.
Which is better for coding, ChatGPT or Claude?
Claude is the favorite of many developers for multi-file changes and agent-style work through Claude Code, which comes with Pro and higher plans and supports large context on recent models. ChatGPT includes Codex on every plan, even Free, so it is the easier place to start. Both share limits between chat and coding, so heavy coders may need a higher tier.
Final verdict: ChatGPT or Claude in 2026?
Our verdict
Pick Claude if your work is mostly words or code and you value quality over breadth. Pick ChatGPT if you want the most complete all-in-one assistant with images, voice, agents and a cheaper Go tier. At $20/month each, you cannot go badly wrong, and trying both free plans for a week is the fastest way to decide.
Start with the free tiers, move to the $20 plan once you hit limits, and only consider the $100 or $200 tiers if you are running out every day. Pricing and plan limits change often, so confirm current prices on the OpenAI and Anthropic websites before you subscribe.
