ChatGPT costs $0 on the Free plan, $8 per month on Go, $20 per month on Plus, and $100, $200 or $500 per month on the three Pro tiers. Teams pay $25 per user per month for a Business Standard seat (or $20 billed annually), with a minimum of two seats. For most individuals, Plus at $20 is the plan that makes sense; Go is the budget pick, and Pro only pays off for people who live inside ChatGPT all day.
This guide breaks down every ChatGPT plan as of September 2026, what each one actually includes, the hidden costs that surprise people, and which plan fits your work.
Key takeaways
- Free gives unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, but uploads, images, voice and deep research are limited, and ads are being tested in the US.
- Go ($8/month) is the cheapest paid plan, with higher limits than Free, projects and custom GPTs, but no GPT-5.6 Sol.
- Plus ($20/month) unlocks GPT-5.6 Sol with Medium and High thinking plus GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex. It is the best value for most people.
- Pro now comes in three tiers ($100, $200, $500). Only Pro 500 includes Ultrafast, and GPT-6 Pro is not unlimited on any tier.
- Business costs $25 per user monthly or $20 annually for Standard seats, and OpenAI does not train on workspace data.

ChatGPT plans and prices at a glance
OpenAI has more plans than ever in 2026. The table below summarizes the list prices and the headline feature of each tier.
| Plan | Price (USD) | Main models | Best for |

| Free | $0 | GPT-5.6 Luna | Casual users and students testing AI |
| Go | $8/month | GPT-5.6 Luna (with Think) | Budget users who need more uploads and images |
| Plus | $20/month | GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex | Freelancers, marketers, most professionals |
| Pro 100 | $100/month | GPT-6 Pro, GPT-5.6 Sol up to Pro thinking | Heavy daily users and researchers |
| Pro 200 | $200/month | Same as Pro 100 with more usage | Power users running agents and deep research |
| Pro 500 | $500/month | Same, plus Ultrafast | People who need maximum speed and volume |
| Business Standard | $25/user/month ($20 annual) | GPT-5.6 Sol all levels, GPT-6 Pro | Small teams that need admin controls |
| Business Premium | $125/user/month ($100 annual) | Same, higher usage limits | Team members who hit Standard limits |
| Enterprise | Custom | Same as Business | Large companies needing invoicing and security reviews |
You can confirm the current list on the official ChatGPT pricing page. If you are comparing ChatGPT against rivals, our guides to Claude pricing plans and Google Gemini pricing use the same format so you can line them up side by side.
ChatGPT Free: what you get for $0
The Free plan gives you unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, which is now the default model for Free users. Luna is OpenAI’s budget tier model, fine for everyday questions and emails.
Everything beyond plain text is rationed. OpenAI lists limited messages with uploads, limited image creation, limited voice chats, limited deep research, limited memory and context, limited Codex access, and limited ChatGPT Work access on desktop. OpenAI does not publish the exact numbers, and they can shift with demand.
Watch out: OpenAI said it would test ads on the Free and Go plans in the US. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise stay ad-free. If ads bother you, that alone may justify moving to Plus.
Who it is for: anyone trying ChatGPT for the first time, students doing light homework help, and people who only need quick answers a few times a week. Who should skip it: anyone who regularly uploads files, needs images, or wants stronger reasoning. If you want to stay free but need more, our list of free alternatives to ChatGPT Plus is worth a look.
ChatGPT Go: the $8 budget plan
ChatGPT Go costs $8 per month in the US. It launched worldwide on January 16, 2026, after a pilot in India that began in August 2025. It is available in every country where ChatGPT is supported, and purchases are in USD, with local currency billing in a limited set of countries.
What Go includes
- “Think” mode with GPT-5.6 Luna, and unlimited everyday text chats.
- Higher limits than Free for image creation, file uploads and data analysis.
- Longer memory, projects, tasks, custom GPTs and the Library.
- Voice mode with the same limits as Free.
What Go does not include
Go has no access to GPT-5.6 Sol and no legacy models such as 4o. Third-party reporting also says agent mode and full deep research are not included. Like Free, Go is part of the US ad test.
India pricing: Go launched in India at Rs 399 per month in August 2025. We could not confirm the current rupee price on an official OpenAI page, so check the app before you subscribe.
Who it is for: students, budget-conscious freelancers and anyone who hits Free limits on uploads or images but does not need a top reasoning model. Who should skip it: people who write long reports, analyze data seriously or code. For them, the extra $12 for Plus buys a much stronger model.
ChatGPT Plus: the $20 plan most people should buy
ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month, billed monthly. OpenAI has not confirmed an annual Plus price, so assume 12 x $20 = $240 per year. Plus is where the real model upgrade happens.
Plus features and models
- GPT-5.6 Sol with Medium and High thinking levels, plus GPT-6 Astra inside ChatGPT Work and Codex.
- Advanced reasoning models, expanded messages and uploads, and more complex image creation.
- Expanded deep research, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs (see our guide on how to create a custom GPT).
- Voice conversations and early access to new features.
- No ads.
Plus limits
Plus is not unlimited. OpenAI says Plus users may still hit message caps, especially at peak times, but it does not publish the numbers. A third-party source lists around 160 messages every 3 hours and 10 full plus 15 lightweight deep research runs, but treat those as rough and unofficial. Codex is more transparent: OpenAI’s Codex docs estimate 5 to 45 GPT-6 Astra messages, 15 to 160 GPT-6.1 Sol messages, or 350 to 3,000 GPT-6 Luna messages per 5-hour window on Plus, and ChatGPT and Codex share those limits.
We cover the practical side in ChatGPT limits by plan and how to avoid hitting them.
Pros
- Access to GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex
- Ad-free, with projects, tasks and custom GPTs
- Same price as Claude Pro and roughly the same as Google AI Pro
Cons
- Message caps are not published and can tighten at peak times
- No confirmed annual discount
- GPT-6 Pro requires a Pro or Business plan
India pricing: a third-party source lists Plus at Rs 1,999 per month including 18% GST. That figure is not confirmed by OpenAI, so treat it as approximate.
ChatGPT Pro: three tiers at $100, $200 and $500
ChatGPT Pro is no longer a single $200 plan. OpenAI now sells Pro 100 at $100 per month, Pro 200 at $200 per month and Pro 500 at $500 per month. Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100, and Pro 500 has the most, but OpenAI does not publish exact multipliers. Only Pro 500 includes Ultrafast.
What the Pro tiers include
- GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra. OpenAI’s help center lists it on Pro 100 and Pro 200 (plus Business and Enterprise), with Medium, High, Extra High and Pro thinking levels. Confirm Pro 500 model access on the plan page.
- “Unlimited messages and uploads”, subject to abuse guardrails. Note that GPT-6 Pro specifically “does not include unlimited use”.
- Unlimited and faster image creation, maximum deep research and agent mode, and maximum memory and context.
- An expanded Codex agent (OpenAI’s Codex docs say Pro currently has no 5-hour limit) and “Dot, your always-on agent”.
Note: Pro 200 is open to new subscribers again, but new subscribers get a lower usage allowance than before. Existing eligible Pro 200 subscribers keep their old allowance until October 29, 2026. Read the official Pro tiers help article before you upgrade.
Who it is for: researchers, analysts, developers and consultants who run deep research, agents and Codex for hours each day and repeatedly hit Plus caps. Who should skip it: almost everyone else. If you are unsure, start with Pro 100 rather than Pro 200. Our detailed ChatGPT Plus vs Pro comparison walks through the break-even point.
ChatGPT Business and Enterprise pricing
ChatGPT Business (formerly Team) is built for companies that want shared workspaces and admin controls. It has two seat types, and you can mix them, with a minimum of two seats in total.
| Seat type | Monthly billing | Annual billing | Usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $25/user/month | $20/user/month | Standard Business limits |
| Premium | $125/user/month | $100/user/month | Everything in Standard with higher limits |
Both seats include ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, Codex, GPTs, Projects, Apps, Company Knowledge, ChatGPT Agent and deep research. Admins get centralized billing, admin controls and spend controls, and OpenAI does not train on workspace data. Business also unlocks GPT-5.6 Sol at all thinking levels (Medium, High, Extra High and Pro) plus GPT-6 Pro. Full details are in the ChatGPT Business overview.
Enterprise uses custom pricing through sales, with invoicing available and the same model access as Business. OpenAI does not publish seat prices or minimums. Nonprofits can get discounts of up to 75% on Business and Enterprise.
Deciding when a team plan beats individual Plus subscriptions is not always obvious. Our guide to when AI team plans actually save money covers the math.
Hidden costs and fine print
The sticker price is not the whole story. Watch for these before you commit.
- The API is billed separately. A ChatGPT subscription does not include API credits. If you build apps or automations, you pay per token. See our OpenAI API pricing breakdown for current per-million-token rates.
- Unpublished caps. Plus and Business limits can tighten during busy periods, and OpenAI does not publish exact message counts or context windows per plan.
- “Unlimited” has limits. Pro’s unlimited messaging is subject to abuse guardrails, and GPT-6 Pro itself is not unlimited.
- Taxes and currency. Most purchases are in USD, so card foreign transaction fees and local tax can raise the real cost, especially in India.
- No video. Sora’s web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026, and the Sora API ended on September 24, 2026. Video generation does not appear on any current ChatGPT plan, so do not pay for Plus or Pro expecting it.
How to save money on ChatGPT
- Start on Free or Go. Use Free for two weeks and note what you run out of. If it is only uploads or images, Go at $8 may be enough.
- Claim the student offer if you qualify. US college and graduate students can get four free monthly billing periods of Plus (including ChatGPT Work) through SheerID verification. It must be claimed by October 31, 2026, needs a valid payment method, and renews at $20. It does not work with app store billing. Our roundup of AI student discounts covers options for students outside the US.
- Use annual billing for Business. Standard seats drop from $25 to $20 per user, a 20% saving.
- Mix seat types. Give Premium seats only to the few people who actually hit limits. Everyone else stays on Standard.
- Ask about nonprofit pricing. Eligible nonprofits can get up to 75% off Business and Enterprise.
- Trim your prompts. Our guide to reducing token usage in ChatGPT and Claude shows how to stretch limits.
Save money: Buy ChatGPT on the web rather than through an app store. The student offer excludes app store billing, and managing or cancelling a web subscription is simpler. For more ideas, see 12 ways to save money on AI subscriptions.
Which ChatGPT plan should you choose?
| If you are… | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A student or casual user | Free or Go | Unlimited Luna chats; Go adds uploads, images and projects for $8 |
| A freelancer, marketer or writer | Plus | GPT-5.6 Sol and deep research at $20 cover most client work |
| A developer using Codex daily | Plus, then Pro 100 | Start with Plus limits; upgrade only if the 5-hour window keeps running out |
| A researcher or analyst | Pro 100 or Pro 200 | GPT-6 Pro and maximum deep research |
| A small team of 2 to 20 | Business Standard (annual) | $20 per user, admin controls, no training on your data |
| A large company | Enterprise | Custom pricing, invoicing, security review support |

Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT Plus worth it in 2026?
For most regular users, yes. Plus costs $20 per month and unlocks GPT-5.6 Sol with Medium and High thinking, GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, expanded deep research and an ad-free experience. Casual users can stay on Free or Go.
Is there a free version of ChatGPT?
Yes. ChatGPT Free costs nothing and includes unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna. Uploads, image creation, voice, deep research, memory and Codex access are all limited, and OpenAI is testing ads on Free in the US. It is a good way to learn the tool before paying for Go or Plus.
How much does ChatGPT cost in India?
Go launched in India at Rs 399 per month in August 2025, and a third-party source lists Plus at about Rs 1,999 per month including GST. OpenAI bills most purchases in USD with local currency only in some countries, and we could not confirm current rupee prices officially. Check the price shown in the app before subscribing.
What is the difference between ChatGPT Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500?
The Pro plan includes unlimited messages (within guardrails), maximum deep research, agent mode and an expanded Codex agent, and OpenAI lists GPT-6 Pro on Pro 100 and Pro 200. The main difference is usage: Pro 200 allows more than Pro 100, and Pro 500 allows the most. Only Pro 500 includes Ultrafast. OpenAI does not publish exact multipliers, so start with Pro 100 and upgrade if you hit limits.
Does a ChatGPT subscription include API access?
No. API usage is billed separately from any ChatGPT plan, including Pro and Business. If you want to build apps or automations with OpenAI models, you need a separate API account and pay per million tokens. A Plus or Pro subscription only covers use inside ChatGPT and Codex.
Can I get ChatGPT Plus free as a student?
US college and graduate students can claim four free monthly billing periods of Plus through the Back to School offer, verified by SheerID. It must be claimed by October 31, 2026, can be redeemed once and renews at $20 per month. We found no equivalent official offer for students in India.
Final verdict: the right ChatGPT plan for you
ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month remains the sweet spot for most professionals in 2026. It gets you OpenAI’s strong GPT-5.6 Sol model, GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex, and no ads. Go at $8 is a smart budget option for light users, especially in markets with local pricing, while Pro 100 is the sensible entry point for power users rather than jumping straight to Pro 200. Teams should start with annual Business Standard seats and add Premium seats only where needed. ChatGPT pricing changes often, so confirm the current price and limits on OpenAI’s official pricing page before you subscribe.
