For most people, one AI subscription is worth paying for: a general assistant at about $20 a month, such as ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro or Google AI Pro. Add a specialist tool, such as GitHub Copilot for code, Midjourney for images or Otter for meetings, only when it saves you paid hours every week. The $100 to $500 plans (ChatGPT Pro, Claude Max, Google AI Ultra) are worth it only for heavy daily users who keep hitting limits.

This guide ranks the AI subscriptions that earn their price in 2026, the ones most people should skip, a simple worth-it test you can apply to any tool, and sample stacks for students, marketers, developers and small businesses.

Key takeaways

  • Pick one $20 assistant, not two. ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro overlap heavily for everyday work.
  • Google AI Pro ($19.99) is the best bundle value: Gemini plus 5 TB storage and YouTube Premium Lite.
  • Specialist tools pay off fastest for developers (GitHub Copilot Pro at $10) and creators (Midjourney Standard at $30).
  • Skip premium tiers until you hit limits several times a week. Claude Max starts at $100 and ChatGPT Pro at $100.
  • Worth-it test: if the hours a tool saves each month, times your hourly rate, are at least double its price, keep it.

The worth-it test: a simple way to judge any AI subscription

An AI tool is worth paying for when it saves more than it costs, by a clear margin. Use this three-step test before you subscribe or renew.

  1. Count hours saved per month. Be conservative. Track one normal week with the tool, then multiply by four.
  2. Multiply by your hourly rate. Use what your time is worth in billable work, or what you would pay someone else to do the task.
  3. Keep it only if the value is at least double the price. The 2x margin covers the time you spend prompting, checking and fixing output.

A worked example: a freelance copywriter bills $30 an hour. Claude Pro saves them about 3 hours a month on first drafts and edits. Value: 3 x $30 = $90. Cost: $20. Since $90 is more than 2 x $20 = $40, it passes easily. The same writer paying for a second $20 assistant that saves only 30 minutes a month gets 0.5 x $30 = $15 of value for $20, so it fails.

For a fuller method, including how to measure time saved across a team, see our guide to measuring ROI from AI tools.

General AI assistants: pay for one, not three

The three main assistants cost almost the same and cover the same core jobs: drafting, summarizing, research, image creation and light coding. Paying for all three costs about $60 a month, or 12 x $60 = $720 a year, and most people use one of them far more than the others.

ChatGPT Plus ($20 a month): best all-rounder

Plus includes GPT-5.6 Sol with Medium and High thinking, GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, deep research, image creation, projects and custom GPTs. It is the safest single pick if you want one tool for everything. ChatGPT Free already gives unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, so upgrade only once you hit upload, image or reasoning limits. Our ChatGPT pricing guide lists every tier.

Claude Pro ($20 a month or $17 annual): best for writing and long documents

Pro adds Opus models, Claude Code, Projects and higher usage, with limits that reset every five hours. Anthropic estimates around 45 short messages per five hours, though long chats and big files use more. On annual billing it is $200 a year, a $40 saving over 12 x $20 = $240. If you mostly write, edit or work with long PDFs, choose Claude. Our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison covers the differences in detail.

Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month): best bundle value

AI Pro gives 4x the Free plan’s Gemini limits, a 1M token context window, Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Vids, 1,000 Flow credits and a limited Veo 3.1 Lite trial. It also includes 5 TB of storage, YouTube Premium Lite and Google Home Premium Standard. If you already pay Google for storage or YouTube, AI Pro can replace those costs, which makes the AI part close to free. In India it costs Rs 1,950 a month. See our Gemini pricing guide for the full feature list.

Tip: Choosing between them? Use each free plan for a week on your real tasks, then pay for the one you kept opening. That is a better guide than any benchmark.

Perplexity Pro ($20 a month): worth it only as your main assistant

Perplexity Pro is strong for research with citations, and it includes a model picker, deep research and premium data sources such as Statista. But the big assistants now do web research too. Pay for Perplexity only if it replaces ChatGPT or Claude, not as a fourth subscription. Our Perplexity vs ChatGPT comparison helps you decide.

Specialist AI subscriptions that pay for themselves

GitHub Copilot Pro ($10 a month) for developers

For anyone who writes code for a living, Copilot Pro has the clearest return of any AI tool. It costs $10 a month and includes 1,500 AI credits. Code completions do not use credits at all. Saving even one hour a month covers the cost for most developers. Since June 2026 Copilot bills chat and agent work in AI credits, so read our GitHub Copilot pricing guide before choosing Pro+ at $39.

Midjourney Standard ($30 a month) for regular image makers

Standard is the cheapest Midjourney tier with unlimited Relax mode images, plus 15 fast GPU hours and HD video. If you make images every week for clients or content, it is worth it. If you need only a few images a month, the image tools inside ChatGPT or Gemini are usually enough. Compare tiers in our Midjourney pricing guide, or look at our list of cheaper Midjourney alternatives.

Canva Pro ($144 a year) for marketers

Canva Pro gives 10x more AI than Canva Free, 5 Brand Kits and 100 GB of storage. At $144 a year, that is $144 / 12 = $12 a month. In India, Pro is Rs 4,000 a year. For social media managers producing graphics every day, it is one of the cheapest tools that saves real time. Details are in our Canva pricing guide.

Meeting notetakers on annual billing

Otter Pro is $8.33 a month on annual billing ($99.96 a year), and Fireflies Pro is $10 a month on annual billing. If you sit in client calls weekly, automatic notes and summaries save time on every call. Otter’s free Basic plan includes 300 minutes a month, so test it first.

ElevenLabs Starter ($6 a month) for voice work

Starter includes 30,000 credits (about 30 minutes of speech), Instant Voice Cloning and a commercial license. The Free plan has no commercial license, so creators who publish voiceovers should pay for at least Starter. Our ElevenLabs pricing guide explains the credit tiers.

AI subscriptions most people should skip

Premium assistant tiers

ChatGPT Pro comes in three tiers at $100, $200 and $500 a month. Claude Max costs $100 for 5x Pro usage or $200 for 20x. Google AI Ultra starts at $99.99. These plans make sense if you hit the $20 plan’s limits several times a week, run long agent tasks, or use Claude Code all day. For everyone else, the jump from $20 to $100 is 5x the cost for capacity you will not use. Our comparisons of ChatGPT Plus vs Pro and Claude Pro vs Max help you check.

Paying for AI you already have

  • Notion Plus for AI: Plus ($10 a seat a month) includes only a limited AI trial. Full Notion AI needs Business at $20 a seat. If you want AI in Notion, budget for Business, as explained in our Notion AI pricing guide.
  • Overlapping assistants: two $20 assistants cost 2 x $20 x 12 = $480 a year. Keep the one you use most.
  • Sora: OpenAI discontinued the Sora app in April 2026 and the API in September 2026, so ignore any offer built around it.

Watch out: Many people forget the free tiers are strong. ChatGPT Free, Claude Free and Gemini Free handle everyday writing and questions. Read our list of the best free AI tools before adding another subscription.

Sample AI stacks by budget and role

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT Plus worth it in 2026?

Yes, for regular users. At $20 a month it adds GPT-5.6 Sol with deeper thinking, GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, deep research, more uploads and better image creation. If you only ask quick questions, ChatGPT Free with unlimited GPT-5.6 Luna chats, or Go at $8 a month, may be enough.

Which is the best AI subscription for the money?

Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month gives the most for the price because it bundles Gemini with 5 TB of storage, YouTube Premium Lite and Gemini in Gmail and Docs. If you would not use those extras, ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro at $20 is a better match, depending on whether you value all-round tools or writing quality.

Is it worth paying for more than one AI tool?

Only when the second tool does something different. A developer paying for ChatGPT Plus and GitHub Copilot Pro gets two distinct jobs done for $30 a month. Paying for ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro together usually means overlap, costing 2 x $20 x 12 = $480 a year for similar features.

Is Claude Max worth it over Claude Pro?

Claude Max is worth it if you regularly hit Pro’s five-hour usage limits, especially when using Claude Code. Max 5x costs $100 a month for 5x Pro’s per-session usage, and Max 20x costs $200. If you hit the limit only now and then, stay on Pro at $20 and plan heavy tasks around the reset.

Which AI subscription is best value in India?

Google AI Plus at Rs 399 a month is the cheapest major paid plan, with double the Free plan’s limits, video generation and Gemini in Gmail and Docs. Google AI Pro costs Rs 1,950 a month. Eligible Indian university students can get AI Plus free for one year if they redeem by December 31, 2026.

Our verdict: the AI subscriptions worth your money

Start with one general assistant: Google AI Pro if you live in Google’s apps or need storage, ChatGPT Plus for the best all-rounder, or Claude Pro for writing. Add a specialist tool only when it passes the worth-it test, and the clearest wins are GitHub Copilot Pro for developers and Midjourney Standard for regular image makers. Leave the $100+ tiers until your own usage proves you need them. AI pricing changes often, so confirm current prices on each vendor’s site, such as the ChatGPT pricing page and Claude pricing page, before you subscribe.
