For most people, ChatGPT is the better AI assistant in 2026: GPT-6 gives it stronger everyday answers, interactive charts and tools, a real agent (ChatGPT Work), better file and document handling, and a cheaper entry plan at $8 for Go or $20 for Plus. Grok is the better pick if you live on X and want real-time X posts in your answers, or if you mainly want image and video generation with looser creative defaults, starting from a reported $10 per month for SuperGrok Lite.
Below we compare Grok and ChatGPT on models, answer quality, features, pricing, limits and privacy, and finish with a clear “choose X if” guide.

Models: GPT-6 vs Grok 4.x
ChatGPT’s models
Since 7 October 2026, ChatGPT’s Chat tab runs GPT-6. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol with thinking levels from Instant to Extra High (Plus stops at High). Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI’s flagship, powers GPT-6 Pro on Pro, Business and Enterprise and is also available inside Work and Codex for Plus and up. Our explainer on GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna covers who gets what.
Grok’s models
xAI’s lineup moves fast. According to third-party trackers updated in early October 2026, the Grok apps list Grok 4.6 on every plan, including Free, while Grok 4.7 launched in xAI’s API on 21 September 2026 as its most capable model so far. Grok 5 has not been released and xAI has not committed to a date. Higher SuperGrok tiers add an Expert mode and, on Heavy, a larger team of agents working on each answer.
Note: xAI’s official pricing and plan pages did not load for us, so every Grok price and plan detail in this article comes from third-party trackers checked in October 2026. Treat them as approximate and confirm on grok.com.
Answer quality: writing, research and reasoning
For everyday writing, summarizing and analysis, ChatGPT is the more dependable choice in our editorial view. GPT-6 Sol at Medium or High produces well-structured drafts, follows formatting instructions closely and handles long uploaded documents. OpenAI also says GPT-6 makes better decisions about when to search and starts answering sooner on search questions, based on its internal tests.
Grok’s tone is more casual and opinionated by default, which some users enjoy for brainstorming and social copy. Its standout strength is freshness on topics people discuss on X: breaking news, trending conversations, public reactions to launches and sports. If your work is social listening or newsjacking, that real-time X access is a genuine advantage.
For deep, cited research, ChatGPT’s deep research and Work produce longer, better organized reports. If research is your main use, also read our Perplexity vs ChatGPT comparison, since Perplexity is built around citations.
Watch out: Posts on X are opinions, not verified facts. When Grok summarizes “what people are saying,” check the original posts and a reliable news source before you repeat a claim in client work.
Features compared
Where ChatGPT is ahead
- Intelligent UI. GPT-6 can answer with charts, buttons, forms, maps and small tools such as calculators. See our guide to ChatGPT Intelligent UI.
- ChatGPT Work. An agent that plans multi-step tasks, uses connected apps and files, runs scheduled tasks and delivers documents, sheets, slides and Sites. Our guide on how to use ChatGPT Work walks through it.
- Codex. OpenAI’s coding agent is included on every ChatGPT plan and shares usage with Work.
- Files and data. Uploads up to 512 MB per file, spreadsheet analysis and an official add-in for Excel and Google Sheets.
- Plugins. A plugin directory that connects ChatGPT to tools like Google Drive, SharePoint and Slack.
Where Grok is ahead
- X integration. Native search across X posts, plus higher Grok limits bundled with X Premium and Premium+.
- Video generation. Grok Imagine creates short videos, reportedly 720p up to 30 seconds on SuperGrok and 1080p on SuperGrok Plus. ChatGPT has no video generation since OpenAI shut down the Sora app in April 2026.
- Image generation. Grok Imagine Image 2.0 is available even on the free plan, with limits.

Pricing: Grok plans vs ChatGPT plans
ChatGPT prices below are from OpenAI’s help center and official ChatGPT pricing page. Grok prices are from third-party trackers that last checked grok.com in September and October 2026.
| Tier | ChatGPT | Grok (reported) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0, GPT-6 Luna | $0, Grok 4.6 with limits |
| Budget | Go $8/month | SuperGrok Lite about $10/month ($100/year) |
| Standard | Plus $20/month | SuperGrok about $30/month ($300/year) |
| Power user | Pro $100 or $200/month | SuperGrok Plus about $100/month ($1,000/year) |
| Top tier | Pro 500 at $500/month | SuperGrok Heavy about $300/month ($3,000/year) |
| Teams | Business $25/user ($20 annual), 2-seat minimum | SuperGrok Business about $30/seat |
| Bundled option | None | X Premium $8/month, X Premium+ $40/month (prices vary by country) |
At the standard tier, ChatGPT Plus is $10 cheaper per month than SuperGrok, and it includes Work, Codex and GPT-6 Astra in those tools. Grok offers annual billing on its consumer tiers (roughly two months free), while OpenAI has not confirmed an annual Plus price. Our ChatGPT pricing guide has every plan in detail.
Save money: If you already pay for X Premium, try Grok through it before buying SuperGrok. In India, ChatGPT Plus can be paid in rupees by UPI; see our guide to the ChatGPT Plus price in India.
Usage limits
Neither company publishes simple message counts for its main plans. ChatGPT Free and Go offer “unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards,” with separate limits on uploads, images, voice and data analysis. Plus has no published caps, and GPT-6 Pro has fixed weekly allowances listed in OpenAI’s GPT-6 models help article, for example 50 messages per week shared across Pro models on Pro $100.
On Grok, third-party trackers report that paid plans share one weekly usage pool across chat, image and video generation, voice and Build, and that xAI does not publish the pool size. Heavy video generation will therefore eat into your chat capacity. For ChatGPT specifics, see our guide to ChatGPT limits by plan.
Privacy and business use
For companies, ChatGPT is the safer default today. ChatGPT Business includes admin controls, centralized billing and spend controls, and OpenAI does not train on Business workspace data. Enterprise adds more controls on top. Individual Free and Plus users can turn off model training in data controls.
Grok’s SuperGrok Business tier is reported to exclude data from training by default and to offer centralized billing and seat management, with SSO and SCIM on Enterprise. Because Grok is tied closely to X, also consider whether your team is comfortable with an assistant whose consumer product is linked to a social network account. Our AI data privacy guide for business explains what to check in any vendor’s terms.

Frequently asked questions
Is Grok better than ChatGPT?
For most work tasks, no. ChatGPT with GPT-6 offers stronger document handling, interactive answers, the ChatGPT Work agent, Codex and business admin controls. Grok is better for real-time X content and includes image and short video generation. If your work revolves around X, Grok can be the better fit; otherwise ChatGPT is the safer choice.
Is Grok free to use?
Yes. Grok has a free plan with Grok 4.6, image generation, voice and limited web and X search, according to third-party trackers checked in October 2026. Paid SuperGrok plans add higher limits, Expert mode and video. ChatGPT also has a free plan, now running GPT-6 Luna, with unlimited everyday text chats subject to safeguards.
How much does SuperGrok cost compared with ChatGPT Plus?
SuperGrok is reported at about $30 per month or $300 per year, while ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month. Grok also has a cheaper SuperGrok Lite at a reported $10 per month, close to ChatGPT Go at $8. Grok prices were confirmed only on third-party pages, so check grok.com before you subscribe.
Has Grok 5 been released?
No. As of early October 2026, Grok 5 had not launched and xAI had not given a firm release date. The Grok apps list Grok 4.6, and xAI released Grok 4.7 in its API on 21 September 2026. ChatGPT’s current models are GPT-6 Sol, Luna and Astra.
Which is better for coding, Grok or ChatGPT?
ChatGPT, for most people. Codex is included on every ChatGPT plan, and Plus users get GPT-6 Astra inside Codex for hard tasks. xAI offers Grok Build and coding-focused API models, which developers can also use through tools like Cursor. For a dedicated comparison of coding tools, see our list of the best AI coding assistants.
Verdict: ChatGPT for work, Grok for X and media
ChatGPT is the better all-round assistant in 2026. GPT-6, Intelligent UI, ChatGPT Work and Codex make Plus at $20 per month the stronger value for writers, marketers, founders and students. Grok earns its place if real-time X data or built-in video generation matters to you, and it is worth trying on the free plan or through an existing X Premium subscription. Both companies change models and prices often, and Grok prices here are third-party estimates, so confirm current pricing on the official ChatGPT and Grok sites before you pay.
