ChatGPT is the better choice if you want the strongest general assistant, custom GPTs and a coding agent on every plan. Gemini is the better choice if you live in Gmail, Docs and Drive, want video generation, or want the most value per rupee, since Google AI Pro bundles 5 TB of storage and Gemini inside Workspace apps. On price they are close: ChatGPT Plus is $20/month and Google AI Pro is $19.99/month.
Below we compare ChatGPT (GPT-6 and GPT-5.6 models) with Gemini (Gemini 3.6 Flash, 3.1 Pro and the 3.x family) on everyday results, features, pricing, limits, integrations and privacy. We did not run scored benchmarks, so the results sections are editorial judgments from regular use, and every price comes from official pages checked in September 2026.
Key takeaways
- Both have strong free plans. Gemini Free includes Deep Research, Gemini Live and image generation, while ChatGPT Free offers unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna.
- Budget tiers: ChatGPT Go costs $8/month, Google AI Plus costs $4.99/month (Rs 399 in India, the same as Go’s India launch price).
- Google AI Pro at $19.99/month adds Gemini in Gmail and Docs, 5 TB storage, a 1M token context window and a limited Veo 3.1 Lite video trial.
- ChatGPT Plus at $20/month wins on custom GPTs, agent mode, Codex and a more polished all-round chat experience.
- Students do well with Google: US college students get Pro free for a year, and Indian students can get AI Plus free for a year while the offer lasts.

Quick verdict: ChatGPT vs Gemini in 2026
If you want one sentence: pick ChatGPT for the best standalone AI assistant, pick Gemini if Google apps are where your work already happens. The table below sums up the main differences.
| Category | ChatGPT | Gemini |

Everyday results: writing, reasoning and answers
We compared the two on the tasks our readers do most: blog drafts, emails, summaries, planning and quick factual questions. These are editorial impressions, not lab scores.
Writing and content
ChatGPT on Plus, with GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-6 Astra available, produces more structured and more complete long drafts. It is better at following a detailed brief, such as a content outline with headings, word counts and a target audience. Gemini writes clean, readable text and is quick, but its drafts often feel shorter and more generic unless you push it with a detailed prompt.
If writing is your main use, also read our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison, since Claude is the strongest writer of the three. For practical workflows, see how to write a blog post with AI that actually ranks.
Reasoning and analysis
For multi-step problems, pricing models and spreadsheet logic, ChatGPT’s reasoning models feel more reliable in our use. Google gives AI Ultra subscribers first access to Deep Think, so on the $20 tier ChatGPT has the edge for harder analysis. For data work in spreadsheets, our guide to using ChatGPT for Excel and data analysis walks through real tasks.
Factual answers and search
Gemini benefits from Google Search behind the scenes and is good at fresh, local and product queries. ChatGPT search is solid for general questions. For citation-heavy research, neither beats a dedicated answer engine, which we cover in Perplexity vs ChatGPT for research.
Tip: Run the same three prompts from your real work in both free plans for a week. Your own tasks tell you more than any benchmark, and it costs nothing.
Features compared: images, video, voice and agents
| Feature | ChatGPT | Gemini |
|---|---|---|
| Image generation | Yes, more complex images on Plus | Yes, including on Free |
| Video generation | Not available | AI Plus and up; Veo 3.1 Lite trial on Pro, Veo 3.1 on Ultra |
| Voice | Voice chats (limited on Free and Go) | Gemini Live, including on Free |
| Deep research | Limited on Free, expanded on Plus | Deep Research on Free, Deep Search on Pro |
| Custom assistants | Custom GPTs | Gems |
| Agents | Agent mode on Plus and above, scheduled tasks | Agentic features and Chrome auto browse on Pro |
| Coding | Codex on every plan | Jules agent and Antigravity on Pro and Ultra |
| Research notebook | Projects | Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) |
Video is the clearest gap. OpenAI discontinued the Sora app in April 2026 and its API in September 2026, and video generation does not appear on any current ChatGPT plan. Gemini includes video generation from the $4.99 AI Plus tier, with Flow credits for Google’s filmmaking tool. If video matters to you, see our list of the best AI video generators.
Custom assistants favor ChatGPT. Custom GPTs have a bigger library and more sharing options than Gems. Our walkthrough on creating a custom GPT shows how to set one up step by step.
Research notebooks favor Gemini. Gemini Notebook, the new name for NotebookLM, is excellent for studying and source-grounded research, and higher Google plans raise its limits. Learn the workflow in how to use NotebookLM for study and research.
ChatGPT vs Gemini pricing
The two lineups mirror each other closely, but Google’s tiers bundle extras like cloud storage and YouTube benefits, which changes the value math.
| Tier | ChatGPT (USD) | Gemini (USD) | Gemini (India) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | Rs 0 |
| Budget | Go $8/month | AI Plus $4.99/month | Rs 399/month |
| Standard | Plus $20/month | AI Pro $19.99/month | Rs 1,950/month |
| Premium | Pro 100 $100/month | AI Ultra 5x $99.99/month | Rs 6,500/month |
| Top | Pro 200 $200, Pro 500 $500 | AI Ultra 20x $199.99/month | Rs 19,500/month |
Google’s INR prices come from its official India subscriptions page. For ChatGPT in India, Go launched at Rs 399/month in 2025 and a third-party source lists Plus at about Rs 1,999/month including GST, but OpenAI’s current rupee prices were not visible on its site. Also note that Google’s one.google.com page showed different USD figures from gemini.google when we checked, so confirm on the official Gemini subscriptions page before buying.
For full plan details see our guides to ChatGPT pricing and Gemini pricing, or the official ChatGPT pricing page.
Save money: If you already pay for Google One storage, moving to Google AI Pro can replace that bill and add Gemini at the same time. At $19.99/month you get 5 TB of storage, which on its own is a large chunk of the value.
Student offers
Google is the clear winner here. Its US page says college students get a free Pro plan for one year, and its India page offers students AI Plus at no cost for one year while the promotion lasts. OpenAI’s Back to School offer gives eligible US college students four free months of Plus, claimable until October 31, 2026, and no India student offer was found. See all current deals in our guide to AI student discounts and free plans.
Usage limits and context window
Google publishes limits as multiples: AI Plus has 2x the Free usage limits, AI Pro has 4x, and AI Ultra up to 20x the Pro limits. AI Pro also lists a 1M token context window, which is large enough for long reports and big document sets.
OpenAI does not publish exact message caps for Plus, and says Plus may still hit limits at busy times. ChatGPT context windows are also unpublished, and third-party estimates put Plus at around 54K tokens for instant models and about 256K for reasoning models. If you often paste long material, Gemini’s published 1M window is a real advantage. Our explainer on context windows shows what those numbers mean in pages of text.
Integrations and ecosystem
Gemini’s biggest advantage is where it lives. On AI Pro, Gemini works inside Gmail, Docs and Vids, and on Workspace business plans it extends to Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet and Chat. If your team runs on Google Workspace, that alone can decide it. Our guide to using Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Sheets shows the most useful features.
ChatGPT is more platform-neutral. It connects to many apps on Business plans through Apps and Company Knowledge, supports custom GPTs, and its Codex agent works across all plans. For Microsoft-centric offices, compare it with Copilot as well.
Privacy and business plans
ChatGPT Business costs $25 per user monthly or $20 annually, with a 2-seat minimum, and OpenAI does not train on workspace data. Gemini for business is bundled into Google Workspace plans rather than sold as a separate add-on; third-party sources list Workspace Business Standard at around $14 per user per month on annual billing, but official prices load dynamically, so check Google’s page.
On consumer plans, OpenAI plans to test ads on ChatGPT Free and Go in the US, while Plus and above stay ad-free. For teams deciding between seats and individual plans, read when AI team plans save money.

Frequently asked questions
Is Gemini better than ChatGPT in 2026?
It depends on your work. Gemini is better if you use Gmail, Docs and Drive every day, want video generation or need bundled storage. ChatGPT is better as a standalone assistant for long writing, harder reasoning, custom GPTs and coding through Codex. At about $20/month each, most people should pick the one that fits the apps they already use.
Is Gemini free to use?
Yes. Gemini Free includes Gemini 3.6 Flash with varying access to 3.1 Pro, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, Gemini Notebook and 15 GB of storage. It is one of the most generous free AI plans available. Paid tiers raise usage limits and add Gemini in Gmail and Docs, video generation and more storage.
How much does Gemini cost in India compared with ChatGPT?
Google’s India page lists AI Plus at Rs 399/month, AI Pro at Rs 1,950/month and AI Ultra from Rs 6,500/month. ChatGPT Go launched in India at Rs 399/month, and a third-party source lists Plus at about Rs 1,999/month including GST. OpenAI’s rupee prices were not shown on its site, so confirm at checkout.
Can ChatGPT make videos like Gemini?
Not in 2026. OpenAI discontinued the Sora app in April 2026 and the Sora API in September 2026, and video generation does not appear on current ChatGPT plans. Gemini includes video generation from the AI Plus tier, a limited Veo 3.1 Lite trial on AI Pro and full Veo 3.1 on AI Ultra, along with Google Flow credits.
Should I pay for ChatGPT Plus or Google AI Pro?
Pick ChatGPT Plus at $20/month if you want the stronger all-round assistant, agent mode and custom GPTs. Pick Google AI Pro at $19.99/month if you would use Gemini in Gmail and Docs, the 1M token context, video features and 5 TB of storage. If you already pay for Google storage, AI Pro is usually the better deal.
Final verdict: ChatGPT or Gemini?
Our verdict
ChatGPT is the better AI assistant on its own, especially for writing, reasoning and building custom GPTs. Gemini is the better value package, especially for Google Workspace users, students and anyone who wants video generation and storage included. If you cannot decide, start with Gemini Free and ChatGPT Free side by side for a week.
