DeepSeek is the better choice if you want a free chatbot or a very cheap API for high-volume, lower-stakes tasks, while ChatGPT is the better choice for most people who need a polished all-in-one assistant with images, voice, agents, strong privacy controls for teams and a mature ecosystem. On API cost, the gap has narrowed a lot: OpenAI’s GPT-6 Luna is now cheaper per token than DeepSeek’s Flash model at peak hours.

Below we compare the two on cost, output quality, features, API pricing and privacy, using official pricing checked in September 2026, and finish with clear advice on who should pick which.

Key takeaways

  • DeepSeek’s app and web chat are free; official usage limits are not published.
  • ChatGPT has a free plan (unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna), Go at $8/month and Plus at $20/month.
  • DeepSeek’s API is priced by time of day: off-peak rates are half the peak rates.
  • GPT-6 Luna ($0.10 input, $0.50 output per 1M tokens) now undercuts DeepSeek Flash at peak ($0.30 input, $1.20 output).
  • For client data, regulated work or team use, ChatGPT Business offers clearer privacy guarantees; review DeepSeek’s policies carefully first.

DeepSeek vs ChatGPT: quick comparison

DeepSeek is a Chinese AI lab known for strong models at very low prices. ChatGPT is OpenAI’s flagship assistant, with the widest feature set of any consumer AI app. They overlap on text chat, reasoning and coding help, but ChatGPT covers far more ground beyond that.

Cost for everyday users

DeepSeek: free, with unknown limits

DeepSeek’s app and web chat are free to use. DeepSeek does not publish official limits, so heavy users may occasionally see busy messages or slowdowns without a paid tier to upgrade to. For students and budget users, that is still hard to beat: a capable reasoning chatbot at zero cost.

ChatGPT: free plan plus low-cost upgrades

ChatGPT’s Free plan offers unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, plus limited uploads, image creation, voice, deep research, memory and Codex. Go costs $8 a month and adds higher limits, longer memory, projects, tasks and custom GPTs. Plus at $20 adds GPT-5.6 Sol with Medium and High thinking and GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex.

In India, Go launched at Rs 399 a month in August 2025 (the current rupee price is unconfirmed), which makes it a strong low-cost alternative to DeepSeek if you want images, projects and custom GPTs. OpenAI has said it will test ads on Free and Go in the US, while Plus and above stay ad-free. Our ChatGPT pricing guide covers every plan.

Save money: If you only need text chat, DeepSeek and ChatGPT Free are both genuinely usable at $0. Our list of free alternatives to ChatGPT Plus covers more options, including Claude and Gemini free tiers.

Quality: writing, reasoning and coding

We do not publish invented benchmark scores, so here is an editorial view based on how the tools are positioned and how they behave in everyday use.

Reasoning and math

DeepSeek built its reputation on strong step-by-step reasoning at low cost, and it remains competitive for math, logic puzzles and structured problem solving. ChatGPT’s paid plans reach further: GPT-6 Astra and the higher thinking levels on Plus and Pro are OpenAI’s strongest models and handle long, multi-step analysis better.

Writing

For marketing copy, emails and blog drafts, ChatGPT generally produces more natural, audience-aware English and follows tone instructions more reliably. DeepSeek is solid for summaries, outlines and first drafts, but expect to do more editing for customer-facing copy.

Coding

Both help with code. DeepSeek’s large 384K max output is handy for generating big files through the API. ChatGPT includes Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent, on every plan, and it works across your repository rather than one snippet at a time. For a broader view, see our ranking of the best AI coding assistants.

Features beyond chat

This is where ChatGPT pulls clearly ahead. Image creation, voice conversations, deep research, agent mode, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs all live in one app. DeepSeek focuses on chat and reasoning. If you want one assistant for everything, ChatGPT is the more complete product; our ChatGPT review covers these features in detail.

API pricing compared, with worked examples

For developers, the cost story is more nuanced than “DeepSeek is always cheaper”. DeepSeek charges different rates by time of day, and OpenAI’s Luna models are now very cheap.

Model (per 1M tokens) Input (cache miss) Cached input Output
DeepSeek Flash (V4.1-Flash), off-peak $0.15 $0.003 $0.60
DeepSeek Flash (V4.1-Flash), peak $0.30 $0.006 $1.20
DeepSeek V4-Pro, off-peak $0.66 $0.022 $1.98
DeepSeek V4-Pro, peak $1.32 $0.044 $3.96
OpenAI GPT-6 Luna $0.10 $0.01 $0.50
OpenAI GPT-5.6 Luna $0.20 $0.02 $1.20
OpenAI GPT-6.1 Sol $2.00 $0.10 $10.00

DeepSeek’s peak hours are 01:00 to 04:00 and 06:00 to 10:00 UTC, Monday to Friday (excluding Chinese holidays). In India time, that is 6:30 to 9:30 am and 11:30 am to 3:30 pm IST. All other hours are off-peak at half price.

Example: a support bot handling 10M input and 2M output tokens a month

  • DeepSeek Flash, peak: 10 x $0.30 = $3.00, plus 2 x $1.20 = $2.40. Total $5.40.
  • DeepSeek Flash, off-peak: 10 x $0.15 = $1.50, plus 2 x $0.60 = $1.20. Total $2.70.
  • GPT-6 Luna: 10 x $0.10 = $1.00, plus 2 x $0.50 = $1.00. Total $2.00.
  • GPT-5.6 Luna: 10 x $0.20 = $2.00, plus 2 x $1.20 = $2.40. Total $4.40.
  • DeepSeek V4-Pro, peak: 10 x $1.32 = $13.20, plus 2 x $3.96 = $7.92. Total $21.12.
  • GPT-6.1 Sol: 10 x $2.00 = $20.00, plus 2 x $10.00 = $20.00. Total $40.00.

At the budget end, GPT-6 Luna is the cheapest of these, and DeepSeek Flash off-peak comes close. At the mid tier, DeepSeek V4-Pro costs about half of GPT-6.1 Sol at peak and about a quarter off-peak. Quality differs between these models, so test your own prompts before you switch. Our guide on estimating AI API costs before you build walks through this kind of calculation.

Watch out: TechNode reported that from September 14, 2026, all V4-Pro requests are routed to V4.1-Flash and billed at Flash rates, while DeepSeek’s official page still lists separate V4-Pro prices. Check which model actually serves your requests before you rely on V4-Pro quality or pricing.

Hidden costs and discounts

OpenAI’s Batch API gives 50% off input and output for jobs that can wait up to 24 hours, and cached input on GPT-5.6 and later costs 0.1x the input rate (0.05x on GPT-6.1 Sol). However, OpenAI charges 1.25x for cache writes on these models, and requests over 272K input tokens are billed at 2x input and 1.5x output for the whole request. DeepSeek’s cache hits are extremely cheap and its off-peak discount is automatic. Learn how to use these levers in our guides to prompt caching and the Batch API.

Privacy and data security

Privacy is often the deciding factor for businesses. DeepSeek is based in China, and some governments and organizations have restricted its app on work devices. Before you send customer data, contracts or proprietary code, read DeepSeek’s current privacy policy and terms, and check where data is stored and how long it is kept.

ChatGPT gives teams clearer controls. On ChatGPT Business, OpenAI does not train on workspace data, and admins get centralized billing, admin controls and spend controls. Consumer ChatGPT users can manage data settings in their account. For API users, OpenAI also offers data residency (regional processing) for an extra 10% on models released on or after March 5, 2026.

The self-hosting option

DeepSeek has a history of releasing open-weight models that you can run on your own hardware, which keeps data entirely in-house. If you go this route, check whether the specific model version you want has been released, and review its license. Our guide on running an LLM locally with Ollama shows how to get started.

Frequently asked questions

Is DeepSeek better than ChatGPT?

Not overall. DeepSeek is excellent value, with a free chat app and a very cheap API that is strong at reasoning. ChatGPT is the more complete assistant, adding images, voice, deep research, agents and Codex, plus clearer privacy options for businesses. Choose DeepSeek for low-cost text work and ChatGPT for broader, customer-facing or sensitive work.

Is DeepSeek free to use?

Yes. DeepSeek’s app and web chat are free, though DeepSeek does not publish official usage limits. The API is paid per token, with off-peak hours at half the peak price. ChatGPT also has a free plan with unlimited text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna and limited images, voice and deep research.

Is DeepSeek safe to use for business?

It depends on your data. DeepSeek is based in China, and some organizations restrict its app on work devices. For public or non-sensitive content it is widely used, but for client data, contracts or proprietary code, review its privacy policy first, consider self-hosting an open-weight model, or use a business plan with clear data terms.

Is the DeepSeek API cheaper than OpenAI?

Not always. DeepSeek Flash costs $0.30 input and $1.20 output per million tokens at peak, or half that off-peak. OpenAI’s GPT-6 Luna costs $0.10 and $0.50, which is cheaper than Flash at any hour. DeepSeek V4-Pro is much cheaper than GPT-6.1 Sol, but check reports that V4-Pro requests are routed to Flash.

Which is better in India, DeepSeek or ChatGPT?

For free text chat, both work well. If you want to pay a little for more features, ChatGPT Go is priced at $8 a month in USD and launched in India at Rs 399 a month in 2025, adding projects, custom GPTs and higher image limits. Developers in India can also schedule DeepSeek API jobs outside peak windows to halve costs.

Verdict: value vs versatility

DeepSeek is a remarkable free chatbot and a low-cost API, and it is ideal for students, hobby projects and high-volume text jobs that are not sensitive. ChatGPT is the better everyday assistant and the safer business choice, and with GPT-6 Luna it now competes hard on API price too. Many teams use both: DeepSeek for bulk, low-risk processing and ChatGPT for customer-facing and confidential work. If you are also comparing Google’s assistant, read ChatGPT vs Gemini.

Check current rates on the official DeepSeek API pricing page and OpenAI’s API pricing page. Pricing changes often, so confirm the latest numbers on each vendor’s site before you commit.
