ChatGPT is still the most complete AI assistant you can buy in 2026. It chats, searches, writes, analyzes files, creates images, talks by voice, runs agents and includes the Codex coding agent on every plan. The free plan is genuinely useful, Plus at $20 per month is the right upgrade for most people, and the Pro tiers only make sense if you live inside the GPT-6 Pro model all day.

This review covers what ChatGPT does well, where it falls short, what each plan costs as of October 2026, and who should pay for it. We cover the current GPT-6 and GPT-5.6 model families, not the older models most reviews still describe.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT is the best all-round assistant: chat, research, images, voice, custom GPTs, agent mode and Codex in one app.
  • Free and Go ($8 per month) include unlimited everyday text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, subject to abuse safeguards, but no GPT-5.6 Sol.
  • Plus ($20 per month) adds GPT-5.6 Sol with Medium and High thinking, GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and higher limits on uploads, images and deep research.
  • OpenAI does not publish exact Plus message caps or ChatGPT context window sizes, so heavy users should expect to hit limits at busy times.
  • Our rating: 8.5/10. Claude writes better long-form drafts, but nothing beats ChatGPT for breadth.
Cards summarizing the ChatGPT review: rating 8.5 out of 10, Free $0, Go $8, Plus $20, Pro $100 to $500, and unpublished limits as the main weakness

Our verdict

8.5/10

ChatGPT is the safest single AI subscription for most people. It does almost everything well, its free plan is generous, and Plus covers the needs of nearly every marketer, student and founder. It loses points for unpublished limits, a style that leans on familiar phrasing, and confusing Pro tiers.

What is ChatGPT in 2026?

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s AI assistant, available on the web, desktop and mobile. Behind the chat box sits a family of models. The GPT-6 family (GPT-6 Astra as the flagship, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna) is live, and the GPT-5.6 family (Sol, Terra and Luna) is still sold alongside it.

In the ChatGPT app, which model you get depends on your plan. Free and Go default to GPT-5.6 Luna. Plus gets GPT-5.6 Sol with Medium and High thinking and uses GPT-6 Astra inside ChatGPT Work and Codex. The Pro tiers, Business and Enterprise add GPT-6 Pro, a version powered by GPT-6 Astra that “does not include unlimited use”, according to OpenAI.

If you are brand new to the tool, our complete beginner guide to ChatGPT walks through the interface before you decide whether to pay.

Key features and how well they work

Writing and everyday chat

ChatGPT is fast, fluent and handles almost any request: emails, outlines, summaries, translations, social captions and strategy memos. GPT-6 Astra is a clear step up for reasoning-heavy writing such as proposals and analysis. Where ChatGPT slips is voice. Left alone, it leans toward familiar phrasing and heavy formatting. A custom instruction with a sample of your writing fixes most of that.

For marketers, our collection of ChatGPT prompts for marketing gives you tested starting points that reduce the cleanup.

Research and deep research

ChatGPT searches the web and cites sources, and deep research builds longer reports from many pages. Free gets limited deep research, Plus gets expanded deep research and Pro gets the maximum. OpenAI does not publish exact report counts per plan. For citation-first research, see our Perplexity vs ChatGPT comparison.

Files and data analysis

You can upload PDFs, spreadsheets, images and documents. OpenAI’s file FAQ lists a 512 MB hard limit per file, text documents capped at 2M tokens per file, and up to 80 files every 3 hours, with Free users limited to 3 uploads per day. Data analysis works well for cleaning spreadsheets and building quick charts; our guide on using ChatGPT for Excel and data analysis shows practical workflows.

Images, voice and agents

Image creation is built in: limited on Free, more complex on Plus, and unlimited and faster on Pro. Voice conversations are available on every plan, with Go sharing Free’s voice limits. Agent mode, which lets ChatGPT complete multi-step tasks for you, gets its maximum allowance on Pro, and Business seats include ChatGPT Agent. Third-party sources report that Go does not include agent mode. If image quality is your priority, compare Midjourney vs ChatGPT image generation.

Custom GPTs, projects and Codex

Custom GPTs let you save instructions and files as a reusable assistant. Projects group chats and files around one piece of work. Our step-by-step guide on how to create a custom GPT is the fastest way to turn repeat tasks into one-click tools. Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent, is included on all ChatGPT plans, including Free, and shares usage limits with ChatGPT.

Note: The Sora video app was discontinued in April 2026, and video generation does not appear on any current ChatGPT plan listing. If you need AI video, look at dedicated tools instead.

ChatGPT pricing in 2026

ChatGPT has more plans than any rival. Here is the full lineup, based on OpenAI’s help center and the official ChatGPT pricing page.

Go $8/month GPT-5.6 Luna (“Think”) Budget users who want higher upload and image limits
Plus $20/month GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex Most professionals
Pro 100 $100/month Adds GPT-6 Pro Power users
Pro 200 $200/month GPT-6 Pro, more usage Daily heavy reasoning
Pro 500 $500/month Most usage, “Ultrafast” Extreme workloads
Business $25/user/month ($20 annual) GPT-5.6 Sol at all levels, GPT-6 Pro Teams of 2 or more
Enterprise Custom Same as Business Large organizations

Go launched worldwide in January 2026 after an India pilot, and was priced at Rs 399 per month at its 2025 India launch (the current rupee price could not be confirmed). Third-party sources list Plus at about Rs 1,999 per month including GST in India, but OpenAI has not confirmed this. Our detailed ChatGPT pricing breakdown covers every plan, and the ChatGPT Plus vs Pro comparison helps if you are tempted by the bigger tiers.

Save money: US college students can claim four free months of Plus through OpenAI’s Back to School offer, which must be claimed by October 31, 2026. After that it renews at $20 per month, so set a reminder if you plan to cancel.

Usage limits: the biggest weakness

ChatGPT’s limits are the most common complaint, and the main reason is that OpenAI publishes so few numbers. Free and Go have “unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards”, but uploads, images, voice and data analysis each have separate limits. The Plus help page says only that it “may include usage limits such as message caps, especially during high demand”.

The firm numbers OpenAI does publish are for the premium Pro model. Pro 100 shares 50 messages per week across GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. Pro 200 gets 200 GPT-6 Pro messages per week, and when you reach that, ChatGPT switches to GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium. Business Standard seats get 15 Pro messages per month. For a plan-by-plan guide and tips to avoid the wall, read our explainer on ChatGPT limits by plan.

Context is another gray area. OpenAI does not publish a context window per ChatGPT plan, even though the API models behind it support up to 1,050,000 tokens. Our context window guide explains why the app and the API differ.

Pros and cons of ChatGPT

Pros

  • Widest feature set of any assistant: images, voice, agents, custom GPTs, projects and Codex
  • Strong free plan with unlimited everyday text chats
  • Cheap $8 Go plan for budget users
  • GPT-6 Astra is excellent for reasoning and analysis
  • Huge ecosystem of GPTs, apps and tutorials

Cons

  • Plus message caps and context windows are not published
  • Default writing style needs coaching to sound natural
  • Three Pro tiers make the upgrade path confusing
  • No confirmed annual discount on Plus
  • Ads are being tested on Free and Go in the US

Who should pay for ChatGPT?

You are… Best plan Why
A student or occasional user Free Unlimited everyday chats cover most study and personal tasks
On a tight budget in India Go Higher limits on images and uploads for $8 per month
A marketer, freelancer or founder Plus GPT-5.6 Sol, deep research, projects and custom GPTs
A consultant running heavy analysis daily Pro 100 or Pro 200 GPT-6 Pro and maximum deep research
A small team or agency Business Admin controls, no training on workspace data, $20 per seat annual

Who should skip paying: people who mostly write long-form content and want a natural voice with little editing, and developers who want the strongest agent-style coding. Both groups may be better served by Claude.

Tip: Use Free for two weeks before you upgrade. If you never see a limit message, you do not need Plus yet. Our list of free alternatives to ChatGPT Plus can stretch that further.

ChatGPT alternatives worth considering

  • Claude: better for long documents, editing and careful coding, with up to 1M tokens of context on Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5. See our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison.
  • Gemini: the best fit if you live in Gmail and Google Docs. Google AI Pro is $19.99 per month and includes a 1M token context window. Our ChatGPT vs Gemini comparison covers the trade-offs.
  • Perplexity: a search-first assistant that is stronger for cited research than for creative work.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT Plus worth it in 2026?

For most professionals, yes. Plus costs $20 per month and adds GPT-5.6 Sol with Medium and High thinking, GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, expanded deep research, more uploads, better image creation, projects and scheduled tasks. If you use ChatGPT a few times a week for simple tasks, Free or the $8 Go plan is enough.

Is ChatGPT free to use?

Yes. The Free plan includes unlimited everyday text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. File uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and Codex are available with tighter limits. Free users can upload 3 files per day. OpenAI is testing ads on Free and Go in the US, while paid plans from Plus upward stay ad-free.

How much does ChatGPT cost in India?

ChatGPT Go launched in India at Rs 399 per month in 2025, but the current rupee price could not be confirmed on an official page. Third-party sources list Plus at about Rs 1,999 per month including GST. OpenAI bills in USD in most countries, with local currency in a limited set, so check the price shown at checkout.

Does ChatGPT have message limits?

Yes, though most are not published. Everyday text chats on Free and Go are unlimited within abuse safeguards, but tools like uploads, images and voice have separate caps. Plus may hit message caps during high demand. OpenAI does publish GPT-6 Pro caps, such as 50 messages per week on Pro 100 and 200 per week on Pro 200.

Is ChatGPT better than Claude?

It depends on your work. ChatGPT is better as an all-in-one assistant thanks to image creation, voice, custom GPTs and agent mode. Claude is better for long-form writing, editing, very long documents and agent-style coding. Both main paid plans cost $20 per month, so many people test both on the free plans first.

Final verdict: should you pay for ChatGPT?

ChatGPT earns an 8.5 out of 10. It is the best single AI subscription for people who want one tool for writing, research, images, voice and light coding, and its free plan is good enough that many users never need to upgrade. Start on Free, move to Plus when you hit limits or need GPT-5.6 Sol, and consider Pro only if GPT-6 Pro saves you hours every week. Plans, models and limits change often, so confirm current prices on the official ChatGPT pricing page before you subscribe.
