Dots: OpenAI’s always-on agents
Dots were the star of the keynote. A dot is an AI agent that keeps running in the background on its own cloud computer and browser, even when you close ChatGPT. OpenAI describes dots as working 24/7, learning from your feedback and connecting to more than 4,000 apps. They run on GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI’s most capable model.
Think of a dot as a digital assistant with a standing job: watch a competitor’s pricing page and summarize changes every morning, triage a shared inbox, keep a weekly sales report updated, or follow up on leads in your CRM. Unlike the older ChatGPT agent, which runs a task when you ask, a dot keeps going.
Who gets dots
- ChatGPT Pro: dots are included and do not draw down your usage limits.
- Business Premium: includes a dot.
- Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare: dots in beta, switched on by an admin.
Watch out: An agent with its own browser and access to your apps can act on your behalf. Start with read-only tasks, review what each dot can reach, and ask for confirmation before it sends messages or changes records. Our explainer on what AI agents are covers the safety basics.
GPT-6.1 Sol and the new API prices
GPT-6.1 Sol is an upgrade to GPT-6 Sol, which launched a week earlier. OpenAI says it nearly matches GPT-6 Astra on agentic coding, computer use and professional work, at one-fifth of Astra’s standard token prices. It also halves the cached input price compared with GPT-6 Sol.
| Model | Input per 1M | Cached input per 1M | Output per 1M |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-6.1 Sol (new) | $2.00 | $0.10 | $10.00 |
| GPT-6 Sol | $2.00 | $0.20 | $10.00 |
| GPT-6 Astra | $10.00 | $1.00 | $50.00 |
| GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast | $60.00 | $6.00 | $300.00 |
| GPT-6 Luna | $0.10 | $0.01 | $0.50 |
These rates apply to prompts up to 272K input tokens. Longer requests are billed at 2x input and 1.5x output. One example OpenAI shared: on a science benchmark task, GPT-6.1 Sol cost $5.47 per task against $23.80 for Astra, though Astra kept the top score.
Here is what that gap means in practice. A workflow that sends 10M input tokens and gets 2M output tokens a month costs 10 x $2 + 2 x $10 = $40 on GPT-6.1 Sol, versus 10 x $10 + 2 x $50 = $200 on Astra. For comparison, the same volume on Claude Opus 5.5 at $4 and $20 costs $80. Our OpenAI API pricing guide has the full rate card, and our GPT-6 models explainer covers Astra, Sol and Luna in detail.
In ChatGPT, GPT-6.1 Sol is available in ChatGPT Work and Codex on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. It was not yet in regular ChatGPT chat at launch.
New ChatGPT Pro tiers and Ultrafast
OpenAI now sells three Pro tiers. Pro 100 costs $100 a month, Pro 200 costs $200 and Pro 500 costs $500. Pro 500 gives 25 times the usage of ChatGPT Plus and is the only Pro tier with Ultrafast. Pro 200 is open to new subscribers again, with a lower usage allowance than before; existing eligible subscribers keep their older allowance until October 29, 2026.
Ultrafast is a premium speed tier. OpenAI says it runs up to 8 times faster in Codex, around 300 tokens per second, and up to 6 times faster in the API. On the API, it costs six times the standard Astra price, so it only makes sense when speed directly saves money, such as a developer waiting on code. Our ChatGPT pricing guide and ChatGPT Plus vs Pro comparison help you decide whether any Pro tier is worth it.
Save money: For most freelancers and small teams, Plus at $20 a month now includes GPT-6.1 Sol in Work and Codex. Only move to Pro if you need dots, Space or much higher limits.
Codex upgrades for developers
- Codex in the cloud: start and manage coding tasks from any device, including your phone, with reusable development environments. Plus and above.
- Refreshed Codex CLI: voice task control, a new
/agentsview for running several tasks, better session resume and worktrees. All plans. - Code Review: a review view in the ChatGPT desktop app, plus automatic reviews for GitHub pull requests and GitLab merge requests. All plans.
- Codex Security Cloud: scans whole GitHub repositories on demand or on a schedule, checks new commits and prepares fixes. Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu.
The free Code Review feature is the quiet winner here: every plan can now get automatic pull request reviews. If you are choosing between coding tools, compare these features with our Claude Code vs Cursor guide and our ranking of the best AI coding assistants.
ChatGPT for teams: Space, Pages and Slack
A large share of DevDay was about turning ChatGPT into a shared workplace rather than a personal chat window.
- ChatGPT Space: a shared workspace for people, ChatGPT and dots, on Pro, Business and Enterprise (desktop and web; mobile can read and share).
- Pages: a new document type that people and agents write together.
- Collaborative slides: due within weeks, with export to PowerPoint or Google Slides.
- Team tasks: scheduled or event-triggered tasks for Business and Enterprise.
- @ChatGPT in Slack and Microsoft Teams: usable without an individual license on Business and Enterprise.
- Meetings plugin: beta in the macOS app for Pro and Business; it saves notes to Space and deletes the audio once notes are ready.
For agencies and small businesses, the Slack and Teams integration is the most practical change, because colleagues without a paid seat can still use ChatGPT in the tools they already live in. Our guide to AI team plans compares the costs of rolling this out.
Plugins, MCP and Sign in with ChatGPT
OpenAI added support for the proposed MCP Events specification, so plugins can trigger automations when something happens in a connected app, such as a new form entry or a closed deal. MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is the open standard that lets AI apps talk to tools; our plain-English MCP guide explains it. Plugins also get sidebar home pages, interactive panels and a redesigned Plugin Creator on all plans.
Sign in with ChatGPT lets Plus and Pro users spend their ChatGPT plan allowance inside 16 partner tools, including Devin, Notion and Vercel. For enterprises, the new OpenAI Marketplace lets companies apply existing OpenAI commitments to 32 approved partners such as Adobe, Figma and Salesforce.
On the API side, computer use in the Agents API has been in public beta since September 10, a Decisions API built on GPT-6 Luna picks from fixed answers you define, and Bedrock Managed Agents lets companies run OpenAI agents inside AWS. Full details are on the OpenAI API pricing page and ChatGPT pricing page.
What was not announced
Two rumors did not come true. OpenAI did not show a hardware device, and it did not release GPT-6.1 Astra; Reuters reported the day before DevDay that the release was shelved over safety concerns. Private Inference using confidential computing was promised for “this fall” without a date or price.
What OpenAI DevDay 2026 means for your business
- Solo founders and freelancers: stay on Plus. You now get GPT-6.1 Sol in Work and Codex, cloud Codex and free code reviews.
- Agencies and marketing teams: test ChatGPT Space and Slack integration on Business, and pilot one dot for a repetitive reporting job before scaling. See our best AI agents list for alternatives.
- Developers: move cost-sensitive workloads from Astra to GPT-6.1 Sol and use cached input heavily.
- Small businesses: agents are getting practical, but keep a human approving anything that touches customers or money. Our AI for small business guide is a good starting point.

Plus at $20 a month suits most individuals, since it now includes GPT-6.1 Sol in Work and Codex. Pro 100 or Pro 200 makes sense if you want dots, ChatGPT Space and Pages. Pro 500 at $500 a month is only for heavy users who need Ultrafast speed and the highest limits.
The bottom line
OpenAI DevDay 2026 marked a shift from chat to agents that work in the background, with dots, ChatGPT Space and a much stronger Codex. The most useful change for most readers is cheaper: GPT-6.1 Sol brings near-flagship quality to the $20 Plus plan and to the API at one-fifth of Astra’s price. Try one feature at a time, measure the time it saves, and only upgrade plans when a feature clearly pays for itself. Plans, prices and rollouts change quickly, so confirm the details on OpenAI’s pricing pages before you buy.
