  12. Our verdict

Claude is the better choice for writing and coding in 2026: its long drafts need fewer edits, and Claude Code comes bundled with every paid plan. Gemini is the better choice for research and value, thanks to a generous free plan with Deep Research, Gemini Notebook, deep Google Search integration and 5 TB of storage on Google AI Pro. Both main plans cost about $20/month, so match the tool to the job you do most.

This guide compares Claude (Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 4.5) with Gemini (Gemini 3.6 Flash, 3.1 Pro and the wider 3.x family) for the three jobs readers ask about most: writing, coding and research. We also cover pricing in USD and INR, usage limits, API costs for builders and privacy. All prices come from official pages checked in September 2026.

Key takeaways

Claude vs Gemini for writing

For writers, marketers and content teams, Claude is our pick. In everyday use, Claude’s drafts follow a detailed brief closely, flow naturally from section to section and avoid the stiff, repetitive phrasing that makes AI copy easy to spot. Opus 5.5 is the strongest option for long pieces, while Sonnet 5.5 is fast and good enough for most blog posts and emails.

Gemini writes competently and quickly. Its strength is speed and access to fresh information, which helps for news-style posts, product roundups and local content. Its weakness is depth: without a detailed prompt, drafts tend to be shorter and more generic, so you spend more time adding specifics.

Where each writer fits

  • Claude: pillar articles, sales pages, case studies, newsletters, ghostwriting and heavy editing.
  • Gemini: quick email replies in Gmail, drafts inside Google Docs, summaries of fresh topics and first-pass outlines.

Tip: Create a Claude Project for each client or brand with a style guide, two sample posts and a banned-words list. Every new chat in that project starts with your voice already loaded. Our guide on using Claude Projects shows the setup.

Claude vs Gemini for coding

Claude has become a favorite among developers, and the main reason is Claude Code. It is included with Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise (not Free) and shares one usage allowance with the chat app. In Claude Code, most recent models support a 1M token context, so it can read a large part of a codebase before making changes. Claude is especially good at multi-file refactors, writing tests and explaining unfamiliar code.

Gemini’s coding story sits in the Google AI Pro and Ultra plans. AI Pro includes the Jules coding agent and entry-level rate limits in Google Antigravity, and AI Ultra has the highest Jules and Antigravity limits. For developers already on Google Cloud or Android, that integration is attractive, and Gemini’s large context helps with big files.

Our view: for day-to-day coding, Claude is more dependable and easier to steer. Gemini is a strong second opinion and a good value if you already pay for AI Pro for other reasons. If you code inside an editor, compare the IDE tools in our Cursor vs GitHub Copilot guide and our list of the best AI coding assistants.

Watch out: Claude chat and Claude Code draw from the same limit. A long coding session in the morning can leave little room for writing work that afternoon. Heavy coders should read our Claude Pro vs Max comparison.

Claude vs Gemini for research

For research, Gemini is the stronger package, especially on the free plan.

Web research

Gemini Free includes Deep Research, and AI Pro adds higher access to Deep Search and agentic features. Because it sits on top of Google Search, Gemini is good at recent events, product details and local information. Claude includes web search on every plan, including Free, and a Research feature on paid plans, but Anthropic does not publish research quotas.

Document research

Both tools handle very long documents. Claude’s paid plans give 200K tokens by default and 1M tokens on Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Opus 5 and Fable 5.1. Google AI Pro lists a 1M token context window. For analysing a single long report or contract, Claude’s careful reading and quoting make it our slight favorite. For studying a stack of sources, Gemini Notebook is hard to beat. Gemini Notebook limits by plan

Tier Notebooks Sources per notebook Chats per day Audio Overviews per day
Free 100 50 50 3
Plus 200 100 200 6
Pro 500 300 500 20
Ultra 500 500 to 600 2,500 to 5,000 100 to 200

For India, press reports say Anthropic added rupee pricing in July 2026, with Claude Pro at about Rs 2,000/month and Max from about Rs 11,999/month, both including GST. Google’s rupee prices above come from its official India page. Check the official Claude pricing page and the official Gemini subscriptions page for today’s figures, or read our detailed guides to Claude pricing and Gemini pricing.

Save money: Indian students can currently claim Google AI Plus free for one year, and US college students can get AI Pro free for a year. Claude has no equivalent student offer in the facts we checked. See more deals in our AI student discounts guide.

API pricing for builders

If you are building an app or automation rather than using the chat apps, token prices matter more than subscriptions. Prices are per 1 million tokens on standard tiers.

Model Input Output Batch (input / output)
Claude Opus 5.5 $4.00 $20.00 $2 / $10
Claude Sonnet 5.5 $2.00 $10.00 $1 / $5
Claude Haiku 4.5 $1.00 $5.00 $0.50 / $2.50
Gemini 3.1 Pro (preview, up to 200K prompt) $2.00 $12.00 $1 / $6
Gemini 3.8 Flash (until Dec 31, 2026) $0.75 $3.75 $0.375 / $1.875
Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite $0.25 $1.50 $0.125 / $0.75

A worked example: a support bot that sends 10 million input tokens and receives 2 million output tokens a month would cost about $40 on Claude Sonnet 5.5 ($20 input plus $20 output) versus about $15 on Gemini 3.8 Flash ($7.50 plus $7.50). Note that Gemini 3.8 Flash doubles to $1.50 and $7.50 from January 1, 2027, which would bring that example to about $30. Both vendors offer 50% off through batch processing. Privacy, limits and business use

Usage limits: Claude Pro uses a session limit that resets every five hours, with Anthropic’s rough estimate of around 45 short messages per session, plus possible weekly caps. Google describes limits as multiples: AI Plus has 2x Free, AI Pro 4x Free and Ultra up to 20x Pro. See Claude usage limits explained for ways to stretch your allowance.

Business plans: Claude Team costs $25 per seat monthly or $20 annually for standard seats, with 2 to 150 seats, and includes Claude Code for everyone. Gemini is bundled into Google Workspace business plans, with Gemini in Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet and Chat on Standard and Plus. If your company already pays for Workspace, you may already have Gemini.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude better than Gemini for writing?

Yes, for most writing jobs. Claude’s long drafts follow briefs more closely, sound more natural and need fewer edits, which is why many content teams prefer it for articles, newsletters and sales copy. Gemini is fast and useful for quick emails and drafts inside Google Docs, but it usually needs more detailed prompts to reach the same depth.

Which is better for coding, Claude or Gemini?

Claude is our pick for most developers because Claude Code is included with every paid plan and handles multi-file changes and large codebases well. Gemini offers the Jules coding agent and Google Antigravity on AI Pro and Ultra, which suits developers already in Google’s ecosystem. Trying both on a real task from your own project is the best test.

Is Gemini better than Claude for research?

For web research and studying sources, generally yes. Gemini Free includes Deep Research, AI Pro adds Deep Search, and Gemini Notebook is excellent for grounded study with Audio Overviews. Claude is very good at reading one long document carefully, with up to 1M tokens of context on Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5, so it remains strong for contract and report analysis.

How much do Claude and Gemini cost in India?

Google’s India page lists AI Plus at Rs 399/month, AI Pro at Rs 1,950/month and AI Ultra from Rs 6,500/month. Press reports list Claude Pro at about Rs 2,000/month and Max from about Rs 11,999/month including GST, after Anthropic added rupee pricing in July 2026. Confirm the exact price at checkout.

Is there a free version of Claude and Gemini?

Both offer free plans. Claude Free includes Sonnet and Haiku, web search, file creation, code execution, memory, connectors and Artifacts, but no Opus or Claude Code. Gemini Free includes Gemini 3.6 Flash, some 3.1 Pro access, image generation, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Gems, Gemini Notebook and 15 GB of storage, which makes it the more generous free plan.

Final verdict: Claude or Gemini?

Our verdict

Choose Claude for writing and coding, where its quality saves real editing time. Choose Gemini for research, Google Workspace users, students and budget-conscious builders. Many professionals get the best of both by pairing Claude Pro for drafting with Gemini Free for research.
