Runway costs $0 on the Free plan (125 one-time credits), $15 per month on Standard, $35 per month on Pro and $95 per month on Max, or $12, $28 and $76 per month if you pay yearly. Every plan is credit based, and Runway’s flagship Gen-4.5 model uses 12 credits per second of video. That works out to roughly $0.29 per second on Standard and as little as $0.12 per second on Max, before you count the retries every AI video needs.
Below we break down each Runway plan as of October 2026, show the real cost of a finished clip with the arithmetic, and explain which plan fits a hobbyist, a freelancer and a small agency.
Key takeaways
- Runway has four self-serve plans: Free, Standard ($15), Pro ($35) and Max ($95). Yearly billing cuts them to $12, $28 and $76 per month.
- The old Unlimited plan and Explore Mode are no longer on the pricing page, so there is no truly unlimited video tier for new buyers.
- Gen-4.5 costs 12 credits per second, so Standard’s 625 credits buy about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 footage a month.
- Credits on Standard and Pro reset every month with no rollover. Max allows up to one month of rollover, and purchased credits never expire.
- For most freelancers, Pro is the sweet spot: about 3.6 times the credits of Standard for a little over twice the price.

Runway plans and prices compared
Here is every self-serve Runway plan in one table. All figures come from the official Runway pricing page, checked on 1 October 2026.
| Plan | Monthly billing | Yearly billing | Credits | Gen-4.5 video | Gen-4 Turbo video |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 125 one-time | About 10 seconds | About 20 seconds |
| Standard | $15/mo | $12/mo ($144/yr) | 625 per month | 52 seconds | 104 seconds |
| Pro | $35/mo | $28/mo ($336/yr) | 2,250 per month | 187 seconds | 375 seconds |
| Max | $95/mo | $76/mo ($912/yr) | 9,500 per month | 791 seconds | 1,900 seconds |
| Team | Contact sales | Contact sales | 6,900 per seat (shared pool) | Depends on seats | Depends on seats |
| Enterprise | Contact sales | Contact sales | Custom | Custom | Custom |
Free plan seconds are our estimate. Runway’s help center lists the Team plan’s 6,900 credits per seat but does not publish a self-serve Team price, so ask sales for a quote. If you are comparing Runway with other creative tools, our roundup of the best AI video generators puts all the main options side by side.
How Runway credits work
Runway does not sell minutes or a fixed number of videos. You get a monthly pool of credits, and each model burns credits at its own rate. Runway’s help center states it plainly: Gen-4.5 “uses 12 credits per second of generated video.” A five-second Gen-4.5 clip therefore costs 60 credits and a ten-second clip costs 120.
Credit cost by model
These rates come from Runway’s model pricing table and the pricing page. Cheaper models stretch your credits further, but quality and control drop.
| Model or tool | What it does | Credit cost |
|---|---|---|
| Gen-4.5 | Flagship text and image to video, best realism | 12 per second |
| Gen-4 Video | General-purpose video generation | 12 per second |
| Gen-4 Turbo | Budget video generation | About 5 to 6 per second |
| Gen-4 Aleph | Edits and restyles existing video | 15 per second |
| Aleph 2.0 | Newer video editing and stylization | 28 per second |
| Act-Two | Animates a character from a performance video | 5 per second (3 second minimum) |
| Gen-4 Image | Image generation and editing | 5 (720p) or 8 (1080p) per image |
| Gen-4 Image Turbo | Budget images | 2 per image |
Gen-4 Turbo shows a small mismatch: the model table lists 5 credits per second, while the pricing page’s own figures (104 seconds from 625 credits) work out to about 6. Plan with 6 to be safe.
Runway also offers third party models inside the app, including Kling 3.0, Nano Banana Pro and Seedance. These are handy when you want a different look, but they have their own credit rates, and some (Seedance at 1080p costs 160 credits per 4 seconds on the pricing page) are far more expensive per second than Gen-4.5.
Rollover and expiry rules
- Standard and Pro: monthly credits expire on your billing date. Use them or lose them.
- Max and Team: up to one month of unused credits can roll over.
- Purchased credits: never expire. The minimum top-up is 1,000 credits, but Runway does not publish the top-up price on its pricing page, so check it in your account before relying on it.
- Free credits: the 125 one-time credits do not expire, but they are not refilled.
Runway Free: enough to test, not to produce
The Free plan gives you 125 credits once, 5GB of storage and access to a selection of models. At 12 credits per second, that is about ten seconds of Gen-4.5 footage, or two short test shots. It is enough to learn the interface and see whether Runway’s style suits your project.
Who it is for: anyone curious about AI video, and students exploring before they spend. Who should skip it: anyone with a real deadline. You will run out in a single sitting, and the credits never refill.
Runway Standard: $15 per month for light use
Standard costs $15 per month, or $12 per month billed yearly ($144 a year, a saving of $36). You get 625 credits a month, which equals 52 seconds of Gen-4.5, 104 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo or 78 Gen-4 images at 1080p.
What Standard includes
- All of Runway’s AI video and image models, plus music, voice and sound effects tools.
- No watermarks and 4K upscaling.
- Up to 5 parallel generations and up to 3 projects.
- 20GB of storage.
Who it is for: creators who need a few short clips a month for social posts, B-roll or storyboards. Who should skip it: anyone producing weekly ads. Fifty-two seconds of flagship footage disappears fast once you account for failed takes.
Pros
- Cheapest way to get every Runway model without a watermark
- Yearly billing drops it to $12 per month
- 4K upscaling included
Cons
- Only about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 a month
- Credits do not roll over
- Highest cost per credit of any paid plan
Runway Pro and Max: for regular production
Pro: $35 per month
Pro costs $35 per month or $28 per month billed yearly ($336 a year). It includes 2,250 credits, which buys 187 seconds of Gen-4.5, 375 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo or 281 Gen-4 images. On top of Standard’s features you get 15 parallel generations, up to 5 projects, 1 Brand Kit, 1 custom voice clone, credit top-ups, Runway MCP (a connector that lets AI assistants use Runway), unlimited 4K upscaling and 100GB of storage.
Pro is the plan most working freelancers should pick. You pay about 2.3 times Standard’s price for 3.6 times the credits, so every second of video is cheaper.
Max: $95 per month
Max costs $95 per month or $76 per month billed yearly ($912 a year). It includes 9,500 credits: 791 seconds of Gen-4.5 or 1,900 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo. Max adds early access to new models, 20 parallel generations, one month of credit rollover, up to 10 projects, 3 Brand Kits, 3 custom voice clones, HDR, ProRes and image sequence export, and 500GB of storage.
Max replaces the old Unlimited plan at the top of the self-serve range. Older articles still describe Unlimited, but it is not on the current pricing page. Max is not unlimited, though its cost per credit is the lowest Runway sells without a sales call.
The real cost per video: worked examples
Credits only make sense once you turn them into dollars. Here is the cost per credit on each plan, using the verified prices and credit amounts:
| Plan and billing | Cost per credit | Gen-4.5 per second | 10 second Gen-4.5 clip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard, monthly | $15 / 625 = $0.024 | About $0.29 | About $2.88 |
| Standard, yearly | $12 / 625 = $0.0192 | About $0.23 | About $2.30 |
| Pro, monthly | $35 / 2,250 = about $0.0156 | About $0.19 | About $1.87 |
| Max, monthly | $95 / 9,500 = $0.01 | $0.12 | $1.20 |
Example: a 30 second product ad
Say you build a 30 second ad from six five-second Gen-4.5 shots. One clean take per shot would cost 6 x 60 = 360 credits. In practice you will rarely keep the first take. If you assume three attempts per shot (an editorial assumption, not a measured rate), you need 18 x 60 = 1,080 credits.
- On Standard (625 credits), that ad does not fit in one month.
- On Pro (2,250 credits), it uses 1,080 credits, about $16.80 of your $35, leaving room for a second ad.
- On Max, the same ad costs about $10.80 of credits, and you could make roughly eight of them a month.
The lesson: your retry rate matters more than the sticker price. Writing tight prompts and testing ideas on cheap models first is the biggest saving available. Our step-by-step guide on how to make an AI video from text shows a workflow that keeps retries low.
Save money: Draft every shot in Gen-4 Turbo (about 5 to 6 credits per second) and only re-render the approved shots in Gen-4.5. That can cut your credit burn roughly in half on exploratory work.
Hidden costs and fine print
- Retries are the real price. Runway charges for every generation, including the ones you throw away.
- Third party models cost more. Premium partner models can burn several times more credits per second than Gen-4.5.
- Voice and music. Runway includes voice and sound tools, but if you need long voiceovers many creators pair it with a dedicated voice tool. See our guide to ElevenLabs pricing for that cost.
- Commercial rights. The pricing page we checked does not spell out commercial terms. Historically, paid plans allow commercial use, but read Runway’s terms before you deliver client work.
- Currency. Runway bills in USD. Indian cards are charged in dollars, so your bank’s foreign exchange markup and GST will add to the price. We could not find an official INR price.
How Runway pricing compares with alternatives
Runway is not the only way to make AI video, and for some jobs it is not the cheapest. OpenAI’s Sora is no longer an option: the Sora app was discontinued in April 2026 and the Sora API ended in September 2026.
| Tool | Entry paid price | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Runway Standard | $15/mo ($12 yearly) | 625 credits, all models | Cinematic clips and editing |
| Google AI Pro (Veo) | $19.99/mo | Veo 3.1 Lite, 1,000 Flow credits | Value, if you also want Gemini |
| Midjourney Basic | $10/mo | 3.3 fast GPU hours, SD video | Animating Midjourney images |
| Adobe Firefly Pro | $19.99/mo | 4,000 credits, up to 40 five-second videos | Commercially safe clips |
| Pika Creator | $35/mo ($28 yearly) | 3,150 credits, commercial license | Playful social effects |
If you already pay for Gemini, Veo inside Google AI Pro may cover light video needs; our Gemini pricing guide explains the tiers. If you are a Midjourney user, its built-in video can animate your images for no extra subscription, covered in our Midjourney pricing breakdown. For talking-head and avatar videos, Runway is the wrong tool entirely; read Synthesia vs HeyGen instead.
How to save money on Runway
- Pay yearly once you are sure. Yearly billing saves 20%: $36 a year on Standard, $84 on Pro and $228 on Max. Our guide to annual vs monthly AI plans explains when committing makes sense.
- Lock the first frame as an image. Generate a still with Gen-4 Image Turbo (2 credits) or another image tool, then animate it. Image to video gives you more control than text alone, so fewer takes fail.
- Prototype on Turbo. Test motion and framing on Gen-4 Turbo, then render finals on Gen-4.5.
- Generate short, then extend. Five-second shots cost half of ten-second shots, and you can cut between them in an editor.
- Use the whole allowance. Standard and Pro credits vanish on your billing date, so batch your production before renewal.
- Downgrade between projects. If you only produce video for campaigns, switch to Standard or cancel in quiet months. More tactics are in our list of ways to save on AI subscriptions.
Which Runway plan should you choose?
- Just curious: Free. Spend the 125 credits on one well planned shot.
- Social creator posting a few clips a month: Standard, yearly if you are committed.
- Freelancer or marketer making ads every week: Pro. The lower cost per credit and top-ups pay off quickly.
- Small agency or filmmaker: Max, for the rollover, ProRes export and 9,500 credits. Agencies should also read our guide to AI for marketing agencies on how to price this into client retainers.
- Teams of several editors: ask Runway sales about the Team plan’s shared credit pool, and compare with our explainer on when business seats actually save money.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Runway cost per month?
Runway Standard costs $15 per month, Pro costs $35 and Max costs $95 when billed monthly. Paying yearly reduces them to $12, $28 and $76 per month. There is also a Free plan with 125 one-time credits, plus Team and Enterprise plans that you buy through Runway’s sales team rather than the self-serve checkout.
Is there a free version of Runway?
Yes. Runway Free costs nothing and gives you 125 credits once, 5GB of storage and a selection of models. That is roughly ten seconds of Gen-4.5 video. The credits do not expire, but they are never refilled, so treat the Free plan as a trial rather than a way to produce regular content.
How many videos can I make with Runway Standard?
Standard’s 625 monthly credits equal 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 video or 104 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo. That is about five ten-second Gen-4.5 clips if every take works, or two to three usable clips once you allow for retries. If you need more, Pro gives you 187 seconds of Gen-4.5 for $35.
Does Runway still have an Unlimited plan?
No. The Unlimited plan and its Explore Mode no longer appear on Runway’s pricing page. The top self-serve plan is now Max at $95 per month with 9,500 credits and one month of rollover. Existing subscribers on legacy plans may still see them in their account, but new buyers cannot choose Unlimited.
How much does Runway cost in India?
Runway does not publish rupee prices. Indian users pay the USD price ($15, $35 or $95 per month, or $12, $28 or $76 billed yearly), and the card is charged in dollars. Expect your bank’s foreign exchange markup and GST on top, so the final rupee amount on your statement will be higher than a straight conversion.
Is Runway worth it in 2026?
Runway is worth it if you need cinematic AI clips or AI editing of real footage on a regular basis, and Pro gives the best value per credit for most people. If you only need a few clips a year, or mostly avatar videos, a cheaper bundle like Google AI Pro or a dedicated avatar tool will serve you better.
Our verdict on Runway pricing
Runway’s pricing is simple once you think in credits per second. Standard at $15 is a fair entry point but runs out fast; Pro at $35 is the plan we would recommend to most freelancers and marketers; and Max at $95 is for studios that generate video every day. Budget for retries, prototype on cheaper models, and pay yearly only when video is a steady part of your work. Runway changes plans and credit rates often, so confirm the current prices on Runway’s site before you subscribe.
