ChatGPT Free gives you unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna at no cost, ChatGPT Go adds higher limits for about $8 a month (around Rs 399 in India), and ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month (about Rs 1,999 in India including GST) unlocks OpenAI’s advanced models: GPT-5.6 Sol in chat, and GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol in ChatGPT Work and Codex. If you only ask quick questions and write short texts, Free is enough. If you rely on ChatGPT for work, research or coding every day, Plus is the plan most people should pay for.

This comparison covers exactly what each plan includes, the limits you will hit, what you pay in India, worked examples of which plan saves money, and when to skip paying altogether. All plan details come from OpenAI’s pricing and help pages unless marked otherwise.

What you get on ChatGPT Free

The free plan is genuinely useful in 2026. OpenAI’s pricing page lists “Unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna”, so you will not be cut off for ordinary questions, rewrites, emails or explanations. You also get limited file uploads, limited image creation, limited voice chats, a taste of deep research, limited memory, limited Codex and limited access to ChatGPT Work in the desktop apps.

Where Free falls short is depth. Luna is OpenAI’s fast, economical model, so long reports, tricky analysis and complex code are noticeably weaker than on Sol or Astra. Heavy users also hit the upload, image and voice caps quickly. OpenAI is testing ads on Free in the US.

What ChatGPT Go adds

Go sits between Free and Plus. It launched as a pilot in India in August 2025 and went worldwide on January 16, 2026, at $8 a month in the US. In India it was reported at Rs 399 a month at launch. Go includes “Think” with GPT-5.6 Luna, unlimited everyday text chats, higher limits than Free for images, uploads and data analysis, longer memory, projects, tasks, custom GPTs and Library. Voice mode has the same limits as Free.

What Go does not include matters just as much: no GPT-5.6 Sol, no GPT-6 models and no legacy models. Like Free, Go is part of OpenAI’s US ad test. Go makes sense for students and light professionals who keep hitting Free’s caps but do not need advanced reasoning. Our ChatGPT Plus price in India guide covers how Indian billing works.

What ChatGPT Plus adds

Plus costs $20 a month and is where ChatGPT becomes a serious work tool. In chat, you get GPT-5.6 Sol with Medium and High thinking, which handles long documents, analysis and writing far better than Luna. In ChatGPT Work and Codex, Plus includes GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI’s most capable model, and GPT-6.1 Sol, which OpenAI says nearly matches Astra on coding at much lower cost.

The pricing page also lists expanded messages and uploads, more complex image creation, expanded deep research, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and early access to new features. Plus is ad-free.

Plus limits in ChatGPT Work and Codex

Work and Codex share one allowance on Plus, measured over a five-hour window and a weekly window. OpenAI’s estimates per five-hour window on Plus are wide because tasks vary:

Model in Work and Codex Estimated messages per 5 hours (Plus)
GPT-6 Astra 5 to 45
GPT-6.1 Sol 15 to 160
GPT-6 Luna 350 to 3,000

Check Settings > Usage to see what is left. Our guide on how to use ChatGPT Work explains how to stretch this allowance, and ChatGPT message limits covers chat caps.

Watch out: Plus is not unlimited. Heavy Astra use in Work can run through a five-hour window in a handful of tasks. Start with GPT-6.1 Sol or lower reasoning effort, and switch to Astra only for the hardest jobs.

Which plan saves you money? Three examples

A student writing assignments and revising

Mostly short questions, explanations and quiz practice. Free is enough most days. If photo uploads of notes keep hitting the cap, Go at about Rs 399 a month is the cheapest fix. Plus is only worth it for heavy research weeks. Also look at free student offers in our guide to AI student discounts.

A freelancer or marketer using ChatGPT all day

Long briefs, reports, data analysis and image creation. Plus at $20 a month (about Rs 1,999) pays for itself if it saves about an hour a month at typical freelance rates. The Sol and Astra access is the real difference here, not message counts.

A developer

Plus gives GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra in Codex, which is a big step up from Free’s limited Codex. If you code for hours daily and keep hitting the weekly allowance, compare the Pro tiers in our ChatGPT Plus vs Pro comparison.

Save money: You can mix free tools. Use ChatGPT Free for everyday chats, and the free tiers of Claude and Gemini for long writing or Google-connected tasks. Our list of free ChatGPT Plus alternatives and ways to save on AI subscriptions show how.

Paying for ChatGPT in India

  • Payment: credit and debit cards work everywhere. In India, UPI is supported for Go and Plus, but not Pro or Business.
  • Currency: India is supported for local billing in INR. App Store and Play Store subscriptions are billed by Apple or Google in local currency.
  • Prices: OpenAI’s pricing page shows local prices at checkout. Reported prices are about Rs 399 for Go and about Rs 1,999 including 18% GST for Plus. Confirm the price on the checkout screen before paying.
  • Billing period: OpenAI’s help center says there is no annual billing for Go, Plus or Pro.
  • Avoid resellers: cheap “shared Plus” accounts sold through UPI links are unofficial, can be shut down and expose your chats to strangers.

Free vs Plus: who should choose what

  • Choose Free if you ask a few questions a day, write short emails or posts, and do not need advanced reasoning or many uploads.
  • Choose Go if you keep hitting Free’s image or upload caps but your tasks are simple, and a low price matters most.
  • Choose Plus if ChatGPT is part of your daily work, you analyze files or data, write long content, use deep research or code, and want no ads.
  • Skip all three and try another tool if you mainly need long-form writing (try Claude) or Google Workspace integration (try Gemini). See our ChatGPT vs Claude and ChatGPT vs Gemini comparisons.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT Plus worth it in 2026?

For daily professional use, yes. Plus adds GPT-5.6 Sol in chat and GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol in ChatGPT Work and Codex, which are far stronger than the free GPT-5.6 Luna. If you only ask occasional quick questions, Free or Go is enough.

What is the difference between ChatGPT Go and Plus?

Go costs $8 a month and raises Free’s limits for images, uploads and data analysis, but it still runs on GPT-5.6 Luna and may show ads in the US test. Plus costs $20, adds GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-6 models in Work and Codex, and is ad-free.

How much is ChatGPT Plus in India?

ChatGPT Plus is reported at about Rs 1,999 a month in India, including 18% GST, and Go at about Rs 399. OpenAI shows the exact local price at checkout, and Indian users can pay for Go and Plus with UPI or a card.

Is ChatGPT Free unlimited?

Text chats are unlimited with GPT-5.6 Luna, according to OpenAI’s pricing page. Uploads, image creation, voice, deep research, memory, Codex and ChatGPT Work are limited on Free, so heavy users of those features will hit caps.

Can I get ChatGPT Plus for free?

OpenAI has run limited offers, such as a back-to-school offer of four free months of Plus for eligible students, but there is no permanent free Plus. Avoid unofficial shared accounts. Free alternatives such as Claude and Gemini’s free tiers can fill some gaps.

The verdict

ChatGPT Free is the right start for almost everyone, Go is a cheap patch for people who hit Free’s caps, and Plus is the plan to buy once ChatGPT is part of your working day, mainly for access to GPT-5.6 Sol and the GPT-6 models. Try Free for a week, note which limits you hit, and upgrade only to fix those. Prices, models and limits change often, so confirm the details on OpenAI’s pricing page before you subscribe.
