Quick answer: The fastest AEO wins are checking that AI and search crawlers can reach your pages, rewriting the first two sentences of key pages so they answer the question directly, making your business details identical everywhere, setting up Bing Webmaster Tools with IndexNow, and asking happy customers for reviews on the platforms AI engines already cite. Each takes hours, not months.

Answer engine optimization is a long game, but plenty of it is not. The fifteen tasks below need no new budget and no developer sprint. Most teams can complete them in a week and start measuring the effect within a month.

Key takeaways

  • Start with access and accuracy: crawlers, facts and consistency.
  • Rewrite intros on your top ten pages before writing anything new.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools now reports Copilot citations for free.
  • Reviews and community answers are quick ways to earn outside mentions.
  • Set a baseline before you change anything, so you can see what worked.

Access and measurement

1. Take a baseline of 20 prompts

Write down 20 questions a buyer would ask an assistant, such as “best [service] in [city]” or “[your product] vs [competitor]”. Run them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, and record whether you are named and which sites are cited. This takes about two hours and makes every later fix measurable.

2. Check robots.txt and your CDN for blocked bots

Confirm that Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot are not blocked by robots.txt, a firewall rule or a “block AI bots” toggle. Training crawlers such as GPTBot are a separate decision.

3. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools

Microsoft added an AI Performance report to Bing Webmaster Tools in February 2026. It shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing AI summaries, which pages are cited and the grounding queries used. It is free and takes minutes to connect if you already use Search Console.

4. Turn on IndexNow

IndexNow tells Bing and other participating engines when pages change, so AI answers can use the current version. Many SEO plugins and CDNs support it with a single setting.

5. Add an AI referral channel in GA4

Create a custom channel group that captures referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and similar sources. Our guide to tracking AI traffic in GA4 gives the exact rule.

Pages

6. Rewrite the first two sentences of your top ten pages

Open your ten most important pages and make the opening sentence answer the main question in plain language: what you do, for whom, where and at what price range. This is the single most useful content change for AEO.

7. Move key facts out of images and PDFs

Prices, hours, service areas, specifications and policies should be visible HTML text. Google’s AI features guidance asks site owners to keep important content in text form.

8. Add a short FAQ to your main service or product pages

Use the real questions from step 1. Keep each answer to two to four sentences. FAQ rich results no longer appear in Google, but clear question and answer blocks are still easy for engines to quote. Our FAQ page best practices cover the details.

9. Show a real author and a “last updated” date

Add a byline with relevant experience to guides and comparisons, and show when a page was last meaningfully updated. Freshness and expertise are both on Microsoft’s list of signals for AI answers.

10. Fix your Organization schema

Make sure your homepage Organization or LocalBusiness markup has the correct name, logo, address, phone and sameAs links to your official profiles. Test it with the Rich Results Test and Schema Markup Validator.

Profiles and mentions

11. Make your business details identical everywhere

Copy one canonical name, description, phone number, address and service list into Google Business Profile, Bing Places, LinkedIn, Facebook, Crunchbase and your main directories. Inconsistency is one of the most common AEO mistakes.

12. Claim your Bing Places listing

Microsoft specifically recommends Bing Places for Business for local businesses that want accurate details in Copilot answers. You can import from Google Business Profile in a few clicks.

13. Ask ten recent customers for a review

Send a short request with a direct link to Google, plus one industry platform such as G2, Capterra, Trustpilot or Clutch. SE Ranking’s 2026 study of 129,000 domains found brands present on review platforms earned far more ChatGPT citations than brands that were absent. See our list of review sites to claim for AEO.

14. Answer three community questions honestly

Find three recent Reddit, Quora or LinkedIn threads where people ask the question your business solves. Answer helpfully, disclose who you are and do not drop links unless they genuinely help. Our Reddit for AEO rules explain how to do this without getting banned.

15. Update your LinkedIn and YouTube descriptions

Both platforms appear among the most cited domains in AI answers. Make sure your company page and channel descriptions use the same canonical wording as your website and link back to it.

A one-week plan

Day Tasks
Monday 1 Baseline prompts, 2 Crawler check, 5 GA4 channel
Tuesday 3 Bing Webmaster Tools, 4 IndexNow, 12 Bing Places
Wednesday 6 Rewrite intros, 7 Move facts into text
Thursday 8 FAQ blocks, 9 Authors and dates, 10 Schema
Friday 11 Consistent profiles, 13 Review requests, 14 Community answers, 15 LinkedIn and YouTube

Rerun your baseline prompts after four to six weeks. Some changes, especially outside mentions, take longer to show up, so keep tracking monthly.
