Quick answer: Good FAQ content for AI answers uses real customer questions as headings, answers each in two to four plain sentences that make sense on their own, keeps facts consistent with the rest of the site and links to the detailed page. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in May 2026, so the goal is no longer a search snippet but clear, quotable answers for people and AI engines.

For years FAQ sections were written to win expandable snippets in Google. That changed in two steps: Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known government and health sites in August 2023, and in May 2026 they stopped appearing in Search altogether. FAQs did not lose their value, though. Microsoft lists FAQ sections among the structures that help content appear in Copilot answers, and short question and answer blocks are naturally easy for any AI system to quote.

Key takeaways

  • FAQ rich results are gone; FAQ content still helps AI answers and readers.
  • Use questions people actually ask, in their words.
  • Answer in the first sentence, in two to four sentences total.
  • Put FAQs on the relevant page, not only on one giant FAQ page.
  • FAQPage markup can stay but is low priority.

1. Use real questions

Collect questions from sales calls, support tickets, chat logs, reviews, Search Console queries and community threads. Real wording matches real prompts better than questions your team invents. Our AEO prompt research guide shows where to look.

2. Write the question as a heading

Use an H2 or H3 with the full question, such as “How long does an AEO audit take?”. Clear headings help engines match a passage to a question.

3. Answer in the first sentence

Start with the answer: “An AEO audit usually takes two to three weeks.” Then add the condition or detail. Answers that begin with background are harder to quote.

4. Keep answers short and complete

Two to four sentences is enough for most FAQ answers. Each answer should make sense if read alone, without “as mentioned above”.

5. Be specific

Numbers, ranges, names and conditions are more useful than “it depends”. If it does depend, say on what: “between $500 and $2,000 depending on the number of pages and locations”.

6. Put FAQs where the topic lives

A pricing FAQ belongs on the pricing page; a delivery FAQ on the shipping page. A central help centre is fine too, but contextual FAQs connect answers to the right entity and page.

When a question deserves more than a few sentences, answer briefly and link to the detailed guide. This helps readers and shows engines where the authoritative page is.

8. Keep facts consistent across the site

If the FAQ says delivery takes three days and the shipping page says five, engines cannot tell which is right. Review FAQs whenever prices, policies or products change.

9. Include the awkward questions

“Is it worth it?”, “What are the downsides?”, “Who is it not for?” and “How does it compare to X?” are asked constantly. Honest answers build trust and give engines balanced material to quote.

10. Use plain HTML, not hidden scripts

Accordions are fine if the text is in the page HTML on load. Avoid FAQs that only load through JavaScript after a click, because some crawlers will not see them.

11. Treat FAQPage schema as optional

Google’s documentation says FAQ structured data can remain on pages without causing problems, but it no longer produces visible results. If your SEO plugin adds it automatically, leave it, and make sure it matches the visible text. Do not spend time adding it everywhere. See our schema markup for AEO guide for markup that matters more.

12. Review and expand every quarter

Check which questions new customers and AI prompts raise, add them, remove outdated ones and update the date. A living FAQ stays useful far longer than one written at launch.

Good and weak FAQ answers

Weak Better
“Pricing depends on many factors. Contact us to learn more.” “Most projects cost between $1,500 and $4,000. The main factors are the number of pages and integrations. A fixed quote follows a free call.”
“We serve customers everywhere.” “We work with clients in India, the UK and the US. Meetings run online, and in-person workshops are available in Ahmedabad.”
“Our product is the best choice for everyone.” “It suits teams of 2 to 50 people. Larger teams with strict compliance needs may prefer an enterprise tool.”

The prices and locations above are illustrative examples of the format, not real offers.

Frequently asked questions

Are FAQ rich results still available?

No. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search in May 2026 and scheduled removal of the related Search Console report and Rich Results Test support for later in 2026.

Do FAQs still help SEO and AEO?

Yes. Clear question and answer content helps readers, matches long-tail queries and is easy for AI systems to quote. It just no longer earns a special snippet.

Should I remove FAQPage schema?

There is no need. Google says it can stay on pages. Just do not expect it to produce visible results.

How many FAQs should a page have?

Usually three to eight on a product or service page. Help centres can have many more, organised by topic.
