Quick answer: Microsoft Copilot grounds its web answers in Bing, so showing up starts with being indexed and trusted by Bing. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, use its AI Performance report to see Copilot citations, turn on IndexNow, claim Bing Places if you are local, and write pages with clear headings, tables, FAQs, evidence and current facts, which is what Microsoft itself recommends.

Copilot is built into Windows, Edge, Microsoft 365 and Bing, which puts it in front of many business buyers. Unlike most AI engines, it now gives site owners first-party data: in February 2026 Microsoft launched an AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools that shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries. Here are eleven ways to use that and earn more citations.

Key takeaways

  • Copilot relies on Bing’s index for web answers.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools reports Copilot citations, cited pages and grounding queries for free.
  • IndexNow helps Copilot use the latest version of your pages.
  • Microsoft recommends depth, structure, evidence, freshness and consistency.
  • Local businesses should claim Bing Places for Business.

1. Make sure Bing can crawl and index your site

Check that Bingbot is not blocked in robots.txt, your firewall or your CDN, and that important pages are indexed. If Bing cannot see a page, Copilot cannot cite it.

2. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools

You can import sites from Google Search Console in a few clicks. Submit your XML sitemap and check the indexing and crawl error reports.

3. Use the AI Performance report

The report, in public preview since 10 February 2026, shows total citations, the average number of your pages cited each day, sample grounding queries the AI used when it retrieved your content, citation counts per page and trends over time. Use it to see which pages Copilot already trusts and which topics bring citations.

4. Turn on IndexNow

IndexNow notifies Bing and other participating engines when pages are added, updated or removed. Microsoft recommends it so that AI answers reference the current version of your content. Many SEO plugins and CDNs support it.

5. Go deep on your core topics

Microsoft advises publishers to deepen coverage in related areas to reinforce authority. A cluster of connected pages on one subject is more useful than many thin pages on unrelated topics.

6. Use clear headings, tables and FAQ sections

Microsoft names headings, tables and FAQ sections as structures that help. Put the main answer near the top of each page and use descriptive headings for follow-up questions. Our FAQ page best practices explain how to write them.

7. Support claims with evidence

Add examples, data and links to sources. Pages that show their evidence are easier for AI systems to trust and quote.

8. Keep content fresh

Update prices, product details and dates regularly. Microsoft lists freshness among its recommendations, and IndexNow makes sure updates are picked up quickly.

9. Keep text, images and video consistent

Microsoft recommends that text, images and video describe the same entities and concepts. A product called one thing on the page, another in the image alt text and a third in the video title creates confusion.

10. Claim Bing Places for Business

For local businesses, Microsoft specifically recommends Bing Places to keep your address, hours and contact details current. Import from Google Business Profile, then check categories and hours. See our list of local SEO tools for help keeping listings consistent.

11. Earn mentions on sources Bing trusts

Copilot answers often cite LinkedIn, review sites, news coverage and community discussions. Use the cited sources in your tracker or manual checks to find where your brand is missing, then earn a presence there through reviews, PR and helpful participation.
